One of my favorite World Cup memories happened yesterday in Seattle. My partner (my children’s dad) and I struck up a conversation at a bar across Seattle Stadium slash Lumen Field with a lovely Belgian couple in their mid-50s who were visiting the city for the World Cup. During the chat, the Belgian gentleman asked a question that only a World Cup visitor could come up with: “What’s it like shopping at Costco with a pickup truck?” Without missing a beat, my partner decided to give them the full American experience. He loaded them into his Ford F-150 Lightning EV pick up truck and took them on a Costco adventure. We wandered through the warehouse, picked up clothes, groceries, and a few other essentials, while the couple marveled at the sheer size of the place. Like many visitors from overseas, they were amazed that one store could sell everything from socks and televisions to enough food to feed a small army. Of course, no Costco trip would be complete without a stop at the food court. So we treated them to the legendary $1.50 Costco hot dog and soda combo. Watching their reactions to one of America’s most famous bargains was priceless. The World Cup is supposed to be about soccer, but sometimes the best memories come from the unexpected cultural exchanges. A Belgian couple came to Seattle for the tournament and ended up getting a crash course in American Costco culture—complete with a pickup truck, bulk shopping, and a hot dog combo that somehow still costs $1.50.
Brilliant! I went to Seattle a long time ago when Arsenal played a friendly against the Reign. It is a great city for tourists.
