    A few things...

First, I've heard U.S. Soccer wants to name the roster early next week. One person told me by July 14 (Tuesday). But, as you could imagine, release issues make things a little out of their control.

Second, this tournament is going to be tougher than usual. Teams like Mexico and Canada will be trying to get their best possible U-20 team on the field because, for them, this is Olympic qualifying as well. It's very, very important to their programs.

The U.S. just needs to get through the quarterfinal to reach its goal. If this was Olympic qualifying, the U.S. would have guys like Gozo. A full strength Mexico U-20 team playing at home is very, very tough.

But the top teams in CONCACAF are going to be far more motivated and desperate than the U.S. team. It should make for a good test for the team.

Honduras is out with the first roster I've seen. It includes a couple of U.S.-based players and Rodriguez, the 2010 at Barcelona.

Panama and Cuba have apparently played a couple of tuneups. Panama won one, and the other was a tie.

El Salvador, one of our group-stage opponents, has also been in camp.

Evidently it is sufficiently newsworthy that an '09 named Estevis Lopez won't be on Panama's U20's for qualifying that he issued a statement saying that he didn't turn down an invitation. He evidently is joining Bayern Munich's "World Squad."

A few teams have announced on social media that they're either en route to or already in Mexico. There's still quite a bit of time until the games start (our first one isn't until the 25th) but clearly some organizations have decided to push preparations forward -- though I say that not having all that much knowledge about what they were doing over the past few months.

I believe the U.S. team will train in Salt Lake before heading to Mexico

I’m guessing no US roster today. Maybe tomorrow.

Xanti is a nice a surprise. No Dills or Di Marzi. Midfield is middling.

Is it a problem that I haven't heard of half of these guys? I'm not exactly a prospect guru, but this is a U20 roster.

This just reeks of assuming we're going to qualify. No one actually getting minutes in MLS aside from 3 or 4 attackers with cups of coffee and Cupps?

The amount of top players not here is alarming.

Let's accept that Zavier Gozo and Peyton Miller are in a different situation. Maybe they are considered for the U-20 WC, but probably not

But besides those two, look at who is not here

    Snyder Brunell
    Justin Ellis
    Jude Terry
    Julian Hall
    Harbor Miller
    Daniel Pinter
    Jonny Shore
    Adri Mehmeti
    Neil Pierre
    Mathis Albert
    Marvin Dills
    Aidan Hezarkhani
    Cavan Sullivan
    Aidan Stokes
    Giorgio de Marzi

That is the longest list of missing talent I've ever seen from a U-20 team for official games (qualifying or the WC).

Well, the ones getting minutes technically aren't on this roster.
