2026 CONCACAF U20 Championship, July 2026: All Teams & Tournament Thread [R]

With the prequalifying stage over, the table is set. Six countries advanced from the latest round: Antigua & Barbuda, Canada, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Haiti and Jamaica. They'll join us plus Mexico, Honduras, Panama, Cuba, and Guatemala. I believe four teams advance to the 2027 FIFA finals.

One thing to note:

The tournament will also serve as the qualifying competition for both the 2027 FIFA Men's U-20 World Cup and the 2028 Summer Olympics.

I believe that since we qualify automatically as Olympic host, presumably meaning that if we were to win the U20 tournament, the runner-up would make the Olympics, since I am pretty sure there's only one additional spot for CONCACAF in 2028.

It looks like the way this will work is eight teams advance -- top 2 from each group, and two third-place teams. (Not a huge fan of formats where more than half the teams advance, but nobody asked me...) That sets up a "win and you're in" round for the FIFA finals.

 

The schedule is out; we play on the 25th, 28th and 31st of July.

CONCACAF says provisional rosters are due 30 days before “the start of the opening match” which I highlight to illustrate that presumably the same dates apply across all teams. (The first games are on the 24th.) They must be 21-60 players, with at least 5 GKs. These lists aren’t binding.

Final rosters are due 10 days before the opening match. They must be 21 players, including 3 GKs. So roughly let’s say these are expected around late June (for the provisional list) and mid-July (for the final one).

A small detail but in the days of switching, etc., maybe it’s worth noting: CONCACAF seems to say you need to have a valid passport number to be on the provisional list. But since those lists aren’t binding, and the passports are apparently checked at some kind of pre-tournament meeting, it reads to me like a guy who isn’t eligible at the time the provisional list is submitted could subsequently become eligible and end up on the final roster.

 

I guess the format more or less requires it, given that eight teams advance and you gotta schedule the games somehow, but apparently those eight teams will be seeded for the quarters, so #1 plays #8, and so forth, meaning funky group results could absolutely make things interesting in terms of who progresses! Also, the breaks between the quarters/semis and semis/finals are particularly short.

 

To the extent that this stuff matters (which I'd argue is very little since provisional rosters are not binding, according to CONCACAF) the deadline for these is I think sometime around next Wednesday. I don't know if they'll be made public, but if they are, I assume they'll pause action in the World Cup so everyone can digest the revelations.

 

The provisional rosters are, I suspect, in by now. I am going to guess that CONCACAF won't publish them, though we may get a surprise, but some countries may choose to release their own, or some version of them, leading up to the tournament.

 

I'm not sure I'd suggest clicking on this (the publication is legit AFAIK, but the pop-ups I got after opening it were bonkers) -- and it pains me to say that, because I'm all for giving sunlight to publications that write about soccer. Your call.

In any case the upshot is that Jamaica's coach says the team's preparations have not been as intense as he'd like, characterizing its preparations as not ideal.

Marsch is under contract with the CMNT through the next World Cup. I guess it's back to work!

Jesse Marsch has quickly shifted his focus to the Concacaf U20 championship, where he will help Canada's mission to qualify for the U23 tournament at the LA 2028 Olympics.

Canada Soccer CEO Kevin Blue says Marsch is already making calls to get players released for the U20s.
