Missed yesterday's match again live, partly because it was midday. We seem to have had quite a few of those this season... more than most other teams perhaps? Even if Sat 7:30 wasn't exactly convenient for live viewing, it was predictable and I usually watched it a few hours later. Anyway we were owned by NYCFC out in Flushing. We never really looked like threatening to get a result against them.. Sure there was a fair amount of rotation because of playing 3 days prior, but a 2-0 loss yesterday seemed deserved to me. And that prior game was a trip to Nashville, where we also lost. And even if it was a narrower 2-1, I'm not sure we were any more threatening. Though I watched it while traveling and half-asleep, so I could be wrong. One thing is pretty clear... that we are far from consistent. These 2 matches followed closely after we inflicted the biggest blowout I can remember... 7-0 against the champions LAG... thought admittedly they're a pale shadow of themselves from just 5 months ago. Maybe part of the blame is that our squad is not good for games every 3 days. (or just not good?) And we have another one Weds in the USOC, at least it's at home so we won't have had to make any big trips for a week or so.
In a stadium with perhaps less people then watched my Summit HS soccer games decades ago, we got the rub of the green tonight and sneaked through to the QF’s of the USOC. Not sure if that’s a good thing for our season overall but if it boosts our squad’s confidence and belief I’n good with it.
We’re not winning MLS Cup, supporters shield, and barely on the outskirts of making the playoffs. This has been a better Open Cup than our regular season. Win and advance. Only legit chance of hardware for us this season.
I agree we’ve looked pretty shit so far. But I’m not giving up yet. Last year we also started poorly and made it to the final! I’m still scratching my head a little bit about that one.
Just finished watching a lively NYRB 4-2 CLT, with the smallest # of fans I can ever remember, but there were numerous positives I could take: Consecutive regular season wins for first time in almost a year We leapfrogged both CLT & NYC in the table Relatively early goals from 2 youngsters: Sofo & Bogacz... and both were slick outside-of-the-boot finishes Coronel's saves kept us in the lead... several times... he's just so consistently good When CLT pulled it back to 3-2, we didn't park the bus, kept-pressing & trying to score, Harper earning a late PK for insurance and +2 GD EMCM is lethal from the spot... and he's starting to show a smile and a bond with his teammates Forsberg was rested for the full match The pitch looked fantastic, best shape I can remember (and it handled a day of steady rain, no problem)
Winning while giving Forsberg a full match rest and EMCM more limited minutes was huge. That Bogacz goal was a great all around sequence of play.
NYRB 2-0 AUFC Happy to keep ATL’s miserable record in Harrison intact. Harper with a fantastic match, especially 1T where he had goal & assist. The goal was a gift from Almiron but Cam still had plenty to do to dig it out. EMCM is *really* good, in several ways, including reliable clinical finishing. Half-season point we sit 6th and 5 pts off first… not bad, and a good recovery. Only bummer was that late in game we lost Valencia to shoulder(?) injury, and minutes later Duncan to hammie? Shame because both were having good seasons with lots of contributions. And Duncs has a poor record for recovering from those things. All in all a significant net plus tonight. I was gonna make it out to NJ and slightly sad I didn’t, but way too many other games I needed to watch on TV today/tonight.
We have been ridiculously inconsistent. I know it's about getting it together at the right time as last season showed but I would like some confidence in our ability to actually win games.
We had 9 games in May, injuries, most notably to Morgan and we seem to have maybe stabilized. We don’t have a game for two weeks and our injured players are poised to return while our older stars will get a nice break. That’s not too bad considering our place in the standings and we still might accidentally bring in an effective player for our open DP spot.
Anyone know off-hand which of our players are going away in Int’l duty? I’m assuming Valencia won’t be now because of his new injury.
Ibrahim Sekagya promoted to full-time assistant - MetroStars / Red Bull New York - Major League Soccer
Watched our game last night. Our players were generally poor. Even Forsberg. We were disorganized, especially on defense. The guys played like they weren’t familiar with each other. And produced very little threat to Austin. Zero points was appropriate IMO.
What was the point of that two week break cuz it feels like we've got our season going on while they're still the club World Cup and the Gold Cup
Season has restarted! And I’m watching us live in Toronto. Nice to see a stadium less full than ours. NOT nice that Choupo is out with some injury. And that his replacement Morgan, In his first start since March, was forced off because of the same problematic knee again! It’s HT and Sofo put us up 1-0. For much of the half we were quite dominant and confident. I guess our opponent had a lot to do with that. ps. Does Warren Barton ever stop talking?! I haven’t heard him do a match in a long long time. And can’t say I missed him for a minute.
And not to be outdone, Edwards does something to his left knee on a shot, just like Morgan did. It’s 1-1 currently at 74’ and TFC deserves it. We squandered a really good start and didn’t consolidate our lead when we were owning the game. Edit: immediately after I posted that, Bogacz Who came on for Morgan, was forced off with some type head/neck/chest distress. When it rains it pours!
The schedule this year is hard to keep up with, I thought Saturday was the resumption. A road draw isn't the end of the world, but it felt like we were starting to put it together just in time for the break, so a little concerning that we're getting injury disruptions.
They called up the 17 year old and saw some highlights late. Kid looked good. We have a good academy so maybe we ha e enough there to avoid a total collapse.
NYRB-Minn has kicked off… PROS: + We’re up 1-0 early + Choupo started (I guess his injury wasn’t too serious) and made our goal (by Forsberg) + Youngsters up top look lively and up for it (Ngoma, Sofo) + Half-decent looking crowd tonight in the balmy weather (I was almost there, but had to bail. Next time?) + Thanks again to Apple for the local audio option! (Neil Sika is so bad) CONS: - Carballo is playing his last game (going back to Gremio after loan expires) - Morgan Isn’t even in the squad (no surprise given that he re-injured his knee* 3 days ago) *Edit: they just said that Morgan’s injury is officially thigh, not knee. Slightly good news??
Thanks. Can't wait for highlights!! If we are ever part of their weekly Freeview game, please alert us.
Sure but don’t know exactly where I would see that it’s on Freeview. Meanwhile, we’ve given up 2 very cheap goals with super laxe defending. So we go into halftime down 1–2.
FT NYRB 2-2 Minn. EMCM rescues a point at 90’. He’s the best finisher we’ve had since BWP. We REALLY shoulda gotten all 3 points tonight. Either by converting 1 or 2 more good chances, or by VAR doing its job when we had 2 really good PK shouts… one of which seemed pretty nailed on for me. Sandro lost his rag (twice) at the HR who was legit poor tonight. Earned himself another suspension, which is understandable but stupid.
Sorry free view is my word. You know how Apple TV offers a game or two that you can watch without subscription. That game is what I am talking about
