    セ・パ交流戦2025

While games between teams from the American and National Leagues have essentially become the norm in MLB, Interleague play is very much treated as a separate and unique entity in NPB.
Over the next three weeks beginning on Tuesday 3 June and ending on Sunday 22 June, teams from the Central League and Pacific League will meet head to head in games eagerly anticipated by fans across the country.

Each team will play each of the six teams from the other league 3 times for a total of 18 Interleague games (9 at home and 9 away).
In all, 108 Interleague games will be played.

The designated hitter system will only be used in games hosted by Pacific League teams.
Pitchers will bat in games hosted by Central League clubs

While each game will continue to be a part of the overall CL and PL regular season standings, a separate Interleague series table will also be used to determine the 'Interleague winner'.
Sponsored by Nippon Life Insurance Company, there will also be an Interleague MVP as well as one Outstanding Player from each league.

Any games postponed due to weather, etc will be rescheduled on reserve days Monday 9, 16 June or during the four day break from Monday 23 June to Thursday 26 June.

The team with the highest winning percentage will be declared the "Interleague Winners"

Only games played during the Interleague window (3 June - 26 June) will be taken into account in the Interleague standings.
Postponed games not played during this time frame will be listed as losses in the Interleague standings.

Unplayed games will eventually be made up at some point during the season (likely in October before the post-season begins) but will not retroactively change the standings of the Interleague table.

    Shigeo Nagashima

    2025-06-03 Shigeo Nagashima.jpg

In a news release by the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper on Tuesday, the legendary Japanese third baseman died of pneumonia at 6:39 a.m. on June 3 at a hospital in Tokyo.
    He was 89 years old.

Long before the rise of Hideo Nomo, Hideki Matsui, Ichiro Suzuki and Shohei Ohtani, Shigeo Nagashima was arguably the most famous player in Japanese baseball history.

Playing for the Yomiuri Giants, the most popular team in Japan, his fame was greatly boosted by the spread of television during his prime years of 1958 to 1974.
Nagashima was all over newspapers, appeared on TV shows and commercials and his visage adorned billboards. His overwhelming popularity helped lift pro baseball into its place as the top sport in the nation.

Nagashima also recorded the most famous hit in Japanese baseball history.
On 25 June 1959, he came to the plate with the Giants and Hanshin Tigers tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the ninth inning at Korakuen Stadium. Emperor Hirohito was in attendance, the first game ever attended by a Japanese emperor. Leading off the inning, Nagashima ended the contest in dramatic fashion, connecting on a sayonara home run off Tigers ace Minoru Murayama.

    2025-06-03 Shigeo Nagashima Sadaharu Oh 4 400.jpg

Nagashima played alongside famed home run king Sadaharu Oh, and together they formed the Giants’ famed ON Cannon and helped power the team to numerous Japan Series titles, including nine during the Kyojin’s “V9” era from 1965 to 1973.

Currently the long time chairman of the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks, Oh released a statement on his former teammate:
"I am very surprised at the sudden news of his death. It is regrettable Mr. Nagashima, a shining figure in Japanese baseball history, has passed away after a long battle with illness. He taught me many things. I am grateful that we were able to play baseball together."

1958 Central League Rookie of the Year
.305 career average (6 batting titles)
    2,471 hits (9th all-time)
    444 home runs (15th all-time))

Highlights from every game as Interleague play began on Tuesday.

The Hanshin Tigers defeated the Nipponham Fighters 1-0 at Es Con Field Hokkaido in the featured Interleague game that matched the current leaders of the Central and Pacific Leagues.

Yusuke Ohyama's third home run of the season provided the only scoring of the game in the 6th inning.

Hiroto Saiki struck out 5 batters over 8 shutout innings to earn his fifth win of the year.

With one out into the 3rd inning Fighters starting pitcher Ruei-Yang Gu Lin was removed from the game and taken to the hospital for an examination. He will likely be out of action for an extended period after pitching coach Takeharu Katō said post-game, "I don't think this is a skip-one-start kind of injury."

Kaito Kozono, Shota Suekane and Elehuris Montero each had RBI singles in the 1st inning helping the Hiroshima Carp to a 5-2 victory over former teammate Allen Kuri and the Orix Buffaloes at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka..

Kuri allowed seven hits in that first inning and four runs total over 5 innings in his first outing against his former club.

Carp southpaw Shōgo Tamamura allowed just one run over 5 frames to even his record at 4-4.

Keita Sano hit his fourth home run of the season to help the Yokohama BayStars to a 6-3 win over the Rakuten Eagles in Sendai.

The victory marks the 9th consecutive year that the BayStars began Interleague play with a win.
By contrast, it is the seventh straight year the the Eagles have started Interleague with a loss.

The contest pitted the last two teams to win the Interleague title with the defending champion Eagles having followed the 2023 champion BayStars.

Leandro Cedeno singled home Shuta Tonosaki from second base to give the Seibu Lions a sayonara 1-0 win in 11 innings over the Yakult Swallows in Saitama.

Chihiro Sumida did not get the decision despite a brilliant 8-2/3 inning shutout performance that saw him strikeout 7 batters while giving up no walks.

For the Central League last place Swallows they have now gone 13 consecutive games scoring 2 runs or less,an NPB record.

    Ukyo Shuto
went a modasho 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored as the SoftBank Hawks shutout the Chunichi Dragons 4-0 in Fukuoka.

Kohei Arihara fanned 7 batters over 7 innings for his third win of the year.

Although their game against the Lotte Marines at ZOZO Marine Stadium was postponed because of rain, the Yomiuri Giants held a moment of remembrance for club legend Shigeo Nagashima who passed away at age 89 early on Tuesday.

Five home runs were sent out of Es Con Field in Kitahiroshima as the Nipponham Fighters held on to defeat the Hanshin Tigers 5-4.

Chusei Mannami slugged his 11th round-tripper of the season while Shu Yamagata connected for the first homer of his career.

Despite the defeat Hanshin were the more impressive with the long ball with Teruaki Sato hitting two to raise his season total to 15 while Yusuke Ohyama homered for the second straight night, a rocket blast that landed in the upper deck of left field.

An excellent, close series so far that could possibly be a preview of Japan's Fall Classic.

Daito Yamamoto and Yudai Fujioka each homered in the 2nd inning to spur the Lotte Marines to a 5-3 victory over the Yomiuri Giants in Chiba, off the East coast of Tokyo Bay.

Hitting in the cleanup position for the first time, Yamamoto hit his first career home run in his first at-bat in a 2-for-3 performance on the night.

Veteran hurler Shuta Ishikawa pitched 7 scoreless frames to finally earn his first win in seven starts this year.

Jun Maeda struck out 10 batters over 8 innings as the SoftBank Hawks made it look easy against the Chunichi Dragons 8-2 in Fukuoka.

Maeda took a no-hitter into the 6th and ultimately finished allowing just two hits and one walk in a dominating performance for his second win of the year.

Ryoya Kurihara, Isami Nomura and Naoki Satoh each homered for SoftBank.

Since head-to-head play began in 2005, Wednesday's results marked the sixth time in Interleague history that the Pacific League swept all six games against what PL fans provocatively call the "popular league"
The Central League has swept all six games on three occasions.

For the first time in 15 games the Yakult Swallows scored more than two runs and ended a seven game losing streak by downing the Seibu Lions 4-1 at the Belluna Dome.

Ryui Itoh and Ren Sawai each connected for their first home runs of their careers while Venezuelan right-hander Pedro Ávila allowed just two hits and one walk over 7 innings to earn his first win in three NPB starts.

Anothny Kay allowed three hits and no walks in 7 shutout innings as the Yokohama BayStars blanked the Rakuten Eagles 5-0 to take their series 2 games to one.

Yuudai Yamamoto drove in three runs to lead the BayStars' offense.

Eagles veteran infielder Hideto Asamura picked up another milestone by playing in his 2,000th game, the 57th player to reach the mark. His played his first NPB game on 31 March 2010 for the Seibu Lions against the Softbank Hawks.

    Teruaki Sato
's 16th home run of the year - and the 100th of his career - was a no doubt moonshot in the Hanshin Tigers 7-1 victory over the Nipponham Fighters.

In the bottom of the 10th inning, 2023 WBC Samurai Japan member Taisei Ota was one strike away from getting out of a bases loaded no-out situation when he hit Akito Takabe to force in the sayonara run and hand the Lotte Marines a 2-1 win over his Yomiuri Giants.

Starting pitchers Atsuki Taneichi (Marines) and Iori Yamasaki tossed gems but were saddled with no-decisions.
Taneichi went 8 innings allowing three hits while striking out 8, and Yamasaki fanned 7 over 9 full innnings.

Yomiuri's Kyota Fujiwara and Lotte's Naoki Yoshikawa each hit solo home runs to produce the 1-1 tie after 9 innings.

Yakyu can be a cruel sport.
Liván Moinelo had an outing for the ages. He struck out 9 of the first ten batters he faced, fanned 15 after 7 innings and wound up with 18 Ks over 8 shutout frames.
That total set a new club record, set the record for most strikeouts by a foreign pitcher, and is the second highest for any hurler in a single NPB game.
Overall, the Cuban lefty allowed just three hits and two walks in a dominating 117-pitch performance and left the game with a 2-0 lead.

Alas, in the 9th inning reliever Roberto Osuna served up a game-tying two-run home run to Jose Osuna meaning Moinelo did not get the decision win.

Ryusei Takeoka then walked it off with a solo blast in the 10th to give the Yakult Swallows an incredible 3-2 Sayonara victory over the SoftBank Hawks at a rocking Meiji Jingu Stadium.

A bases loaded single by Seiya Kinami broke a scoreless deadlock and gave the Hanshin Tigers the 1-0 sayonara win over the Orix Buffaloes in the first game of the Kansai Derby series.

Koshien Stadium witnessed great pitching as starters Shoki Murakami and Kohei Azuma each took no-hitters into the 7th inning against the best offenses in their respective leagues.
Murakami ultimately departed after 8 marvelous frames allowing just two hits and two walks while recording 6 strikeouts.
Azuma went 7 innings allowing only one hit two walks while also fanning 6 batters.

There was a very scary moment in the top of the 9th inning when Taishi Hirooka lined a comebacker that struck Tigers reliever Daichi Ishii in the head. Ishii's neck was immobilized as he was carried off on a stretcher and was rushed to the hospital. Hanshin manager Kyuji Fujikawa noted after the game, "The team doctor examined him and he is clearly conscious. We are currently taking him to the hospital for a CT scan just to be sure, but as it is a brain injury, we will have to closely monitor his current and future symptoms."

"I am very worried about Daichi Ishii's accident tonight. I hope he is okay and recovers quickly."

Trevor Bauer, pitching on four days rest, notched his fourth win of the year in a complete game performance as the Yokohama BayStars defeated the Pacific League-leading Nipponham Fighters 2-1 at Hamasta.

The Yomiuri Giants wore special #3 patches in honor of club legend Shigeo Nagashima but went down to defeat 2-0 to the Rakuten Eagles, the only game on Friday where a Pacific League team defeated a Central League foe.

Ironically, it was Hideto Asamura, wearing Rakuten's #3 jersey, that provided the game winning hit with a solo home run in the 6th inning.

American Spencer Howard struck out 6 batters over 7 innings for his second win of the season.

Six consecutive batters reached base safely in the bottom of the 9th inning to flip a 3-1 deficit into a dramatic 4-3 sayonara victory for the Chunichi Dragons over the Lotte Marines at the Vantelin Dome in Nagoya.

Lotte closer Shota Suzuki had opened the inning with two quick outs before imploding, surrendering three hits, a hit batsman and two walks including a bases loaded walk to Mikiya Tanaka to force in the walk off run

The comeback robbed Marines starter Haruya Tanaka of his fourth win despite allowing just four hits and no walks while striking out 9 hitters over 7 strong innings.

Seiji Uebayashi hit his 8th home run of the year for the Dragons.

Hiroki Tokoda tossed his fifth complete game of the season helping the Hiroshima Carp to a 5-2 win over the Seibu Lions at Mazda Stadium.

Tokoda threw 117 pitches while earning his sixth win of the year.

Elehuris Montero drove in two runs while Shogo Sakakura hit his second home run of 2025 to help lead the Carp attack.

It was the worst outing for Lions ace Tatsuya Imai, as far as runs allowed in concerned, anyway. Five earned runs over 7 innings lifted his ERA to 1.30 but his 9 strikeouts puts him at 87, tops in the whole of NPB.

Sachiya Yamasaki picked up his third win of the year after throwing 7-2/3 innings as the Nipponham Fighters defeated the Yokohama BayStars 7-4 at Hamasta.

A career Pacific Leaguer who previous played with the Orix Buffaloes before joining the Fighters two years ago, Yamasaki only wields the bat in Interleague games played at Central League ballparks. Yet he entered Saturday's contest with a .276 average and had only struck out twice over 29 career plate appearances.
Batting seventh in the lineup on Saturday Yamasaki fanned for the third time in his career before helping his cause with a bases loaded two-RBI single to the humorous delight of his teammates.

Ryūki Watarai led the BayStars at the plate going 3-for-4 with three RBIs.

Masaki Mimori lined a pinch-hit bases loaded single to right field scoring Yota Kyoda to give the Yokohama BayStars a 5-4 sayonara victory over the Nipponham Fighters at Yokohama Stadium.

The win was very much a team effort offensively as five different players collected the RBIs.

Shosei Togo was in vintage form throwing 7 shutout innings to lead the Yomiuri Giants to a 5-0 blanking over the Rakuten Eagles at the Tokyo Dome.

Yukinori Kishida cushioned a 1-0 lead with a grand slam in the 6th inning to put the result beyond doubt.

Shohei Mori tossed his first career complete game shutout collecting 8 strikeouts along the way as the Hiroshima Carp put a hammering to the Seibu Lions 10-0 at Mazda Stadium.

Masaya Yano, Sandro Fabian and Shogo Sakakura each achieved three-hit modashos driving in a combined seven runs as the Carp pounded out 16 hits throughout the afternoon.

Teruaki Sato hit a grand slam, home run #17 on the year, as the Hanshin Tigers completed a Kansai Derby sweep of the Orix Buffaloes with an 8-1 win at Koshien.
