MLS teams keep on getting fleeced. Atlanta, Houston, FC Dallas all fleeced.
Failure to pay a transfer fee isn't being fleeced.. That would be Botafogo breaking a contract and per the FIFA tribunal Botafogo is about to get smacked with transfer restrictions until they pay the transfer fee.
I was laughing at the possibility of a Montreal CPL team. There was an update as of yesterday saying that there's the possibility of a team in 2026 but all the details still seem vague. John Rizetta of Brooklyn FC was named as the lead investor. It still all seems a bit sketchy.
@STR1 🇳🇱 Sources: LAFC have signed Dutch winger Javairô Dilrosun on loan from Club AmericaDeal done in pre-Club World Cup window, which is now closed. The first, & maybe only, signing for MLS club in window.Dilrosun, 26, joined CA for reported $5m fee.https://t.co/pMte8zIuU1— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) June 11, 2025
A few Canadians in MLS are linked to clubs in Europe according to the Athletic. Nathan-Dylan Saliba, CF Montréal has been linked with RSC Anderlecht Tani Oluwaseyi, - England, France and Belgium. With an estimated market value of 5 million euros
He strikes me as fairly comparable to Agyemang, so that gives us an idea of Big Pat’s market value. Oluwaseyi has a better goal scoring record, but Agyemang excels at other aspect of center forward play.
There's a way to to in the CWC and plenty of time for an embarrassing result or two but I wonder if a few European clubs will be taking a look at MLS players during the tournament and thinking they can pick up a bargain or two. For context, Southampton had 9 players making more than $2.5 million last year.
Going the opposite way, Sidnei Tavares who was brought in on a year long loan by the Rapids in the summer of 2023 and was useless, to the point where they waived him in the offseason rather than finish out his loan in the first half of 2024, was just bought by Blackburn for a rumored 2 million pounds.
Good to see that "use MLS as a bargaining chip" strategy is still paying off (Bogert had reported that the Rapids signing him was essentially a done deal)
We'll never really know if this is a big loss or if we avoided another Sidnei Tavares here. Either way, CB is not where we need to spend money at this point.
Seems like an unlikely move…how many players at Genk make a million Euros a year? Because if Agyemang can score 10-12 a year in MLS plus be the face of a franchise plus be an elite MLSer at every part of forward play except finishing, he’s going to be making much more than that with his next contract even if the league doesn’t start spending slot more money after 2026. And given what everyone thinks is gonna happen with the next CBA, there’s no chance Genk will pay him more than Charlotte. Heck, what do Anderlecht’s top earners make? Unless Genk is part of one of those multi league club consortiums and the idea is Agyemang is on a path to the top club in that pyramid, this doesn’t make much sense financially for him.
Genk is not part of a multi club ownership. But they have in the past 5-10 seasons taken big, tall forwards and made them the center of their attack. Most have moved on for good clubs at a nice number for club and player. I agree that this is unlikely, but he does fit the mold the club has recruited. Paul Onucahu - 79 goals in 134 matches with the club, left for Southampton Tolu Arokodare - 40 goals in 108 matches with the club - on his way out, Agyemang would be the replacement If you look at he size and profile, these two are very similar to Agyemang. Now would it be ideal for him, I have no idea, but this seem to has at least a semblance of making sense. Unlike many rumors that get started.
Never underestimate the appeal of playing in Europe. And also not playing on Charlotte's turf for too long. Plus, in the last year, Genk has sold players to Leicester, Chelsea, Burnley, Leipzig, Galatasaray, Como, and Toulouse. It's a great stepping-stone club.
Fair enough. With the right clauses in is contract I can see the appeal. It’s still pretty risky; like I said, if he keeps on keeping on, his next contract is going to be very competitive with any he could get even in Holland, or half the French league.
Genk is also linked with Zavier Gozo 🚨🔵 EXCL - KRC Genk is making inquiries about Zavier Gozo!🇺🇸 Considered one of the brightest prospects in American soccer, the 18-year-old right winger is being closely monitored by Genk’s management.👀 A situation to keep an eye on. #mercato #JPL #MLS pic.twitter.com/2PL5dKrGKR— Sacha Tavolieri (@sachatavolieri) June 25, 2025
My personal and totally subjective opinion is that MLS has been stagnant in terms of level of play for 2 seasons now, and one reason is that Europe trusts MLS now. So they’re scooping up your Gozos before they can really make a mark in MLS. Patrick Agyemang is on $104,000. I think Minnesota’s Oluwaseyi is comparable, but slightly older and not as good, and he’s on $558,000. Jordan Morris’s current contract is a starting point for Agyemang’s next one, and JoMo is on $2.26M. Now, JoMo was a better player at the same point in his career, Agyemang would be looking at less…except the trendlines for MLS salaries are going up. I’m just adding some data about my thoughts on the rumor of Big Pat going to Genk. The Union’s salary dump every year is a fun time for nerds like me.
Morris was on $500k at Agyemang's age. He broke a $million at 27. Is Agyemang today worth to Charlotte what JM is worth to Seattle? If so he's probably not moving to Europe, because no European club is going to play him 7 figures. He's one of those players that (understandably) chose college, which means all the critical career decisions are condensed into a very short time period. He's the same age as Brenden Aaronson who's played in the Premier League and the Bundesliga.
