That statement assumes no responsibility whatsoever by any Miami player. They could just as easily be condemning only Seattle players for what happened.
We’re sorry that bad things happen in the world, if they do. Some bad things may be done by people. Who, we cannot say, and what would it matter if we could? We all desire justice, and desire is the root of all suffering, meaning that the bad things of the world are punishment for us all, including whoever does them, if anyone does. To live is to be punished, and no further discipline by the club is necessary or, in the grand scheme, possible. Big sale on Messi jerseys!
Presumably, they inserted "we remain committed to upholding the highest standards of sportsmanship both on and off the pitch" for comic relief. Suarez is trying to use the "I Shot the Sheriff" defense: Reflexes had got the better of me And what is to be must be Every day the bucket a-go a-well One day the bottom a-go drop out One day the bottom a-go drop out I say I, I, I, I shot the sheriff Lord, I didn't shot the deputy, no I, I (shot the sheriff) But I didn't shoot no deputy yeah So, yeah
Has MLS ever sanctioned anyone for actions in the CCL or its predecessors? Because that’s the analogy here.
So it won't effect him as I don't think Miami will renew his contract. They'll probably sign Angel Di Maria (total speculation on my part).
CCC isn't the best analogy because MLS isn't the co-owner and co-organizer of CCC. MLS suspended Mike Petke (as RSL coach) for three MLS games based on the 2019 Leagues Cup.
Regardless of what the MLS can or should do to the players involved, there are two things the MLS unquestionably could address: consequences for the fan brawl outside the stadium after the Leagues Cup title match and proactive measures regarding the upcoming Miami v. Seattle regular season match. At a minimum, the specific fans who instigated the brawl outside the stadium should be banned and the appropriate MLS disciplinary review personnel should attend the Miami-Seattle match in person to provide immediate oversight if anything of concern occurs between players during the match. The MLS also has the authority to determine location and scheduling of matches. If the MLS wanted to be more emphatic, the upcoming match could be played in an empty stadium, moved to a neutral site, or (with difficulty) postponed to an open date a couple weeks later, to give a bit more time for things to cool down. I'd hate to be on the officiating crew for the upcoming match. Every single decision will be second-guessed to death.
Wikipedia says he was fired, and also that it was for referee abuse, which we already know is an exception because of the Dempsey incident in the Open Cup. Also, his referee abuse was homophobic, which again we’ve already established is different. https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/real-salt-lake-terminate-contract-head-coach-mike-petke Also, coaches don’t have a labor contract with the league.
Pretty sure the club will be taking action against any fans they identify. But there were 40k non regulars there.
Petke was suspended and then later fired before he returned from suspension. I believe they took the time during suspension to review further before the firing. He did serve some (all???) of the suspended matches MLS imposed on him.
RSL had been run by a shitshow since 2013. We had “we don’t need to practice” Jeff-f********ing-pedo-Cassar for a head coach after Kreis left. Then Petke after him, who was already on a short leash. Our owner and his appointed President already had a bunch of complaints floating around them, and Petke was very demonstrably causing issues within and without the team. After Petke was fired, Freddy Juarez, now an Assistant under Schmetzer, adopted the cat that disrupted this League’s Cup game when Petke went off the rails again, leading to his termination. Has anyone heard of Caesar or Petke coaching anywhere since they left RSL? No? I wonder why?
I’m a little surprised that Falcon didn’t get any.. he was dragging Baker around by the neck and refused to let him go until Lenhart punched him..
Freddy is a great guy. He’s a great development coach. He’s a pretty good tactician. He’s a fine coach, but maybe not for MLS. His tenure at RSL was the most conservative and boring soccer possible, while keeping new talent on the bench or game day roster even. It was incredibly disappointing, although it makes sense given all the bullshit going on behind scenes. The fact that Schmetzer recruited him to go from HC in SLC to AC in Seattle explains a lot. It is likely his ceiling, and that is not a pejorative.
Google pointed me to this bigsoccer thread of yore. https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/just-curious-length-of-suspension-for-spitting.288090/ Unless the standards have gotten more strict, 6 games for a player with Suarez’ history seems fair. 3 or 4 for spitting, and a couple for his history. They can’t do that unless Busquets or Alba or Messi retires, or unless Di Maria is ants to pull a Suarez and just play for a million dollars and the fun of it.
The hardest position for me to evaluate is central defense; I have to see more of a player there than any other position, before I begin to have enough info to evaluate. So I may be way off here. But doesn’t Falcon suck? Aren’t his weaknesses one of the big reasons Inter isn’t going to win the Cup?
RSL has had a couple of spitting instances in the last handful of years, one truly bizarre, where 3games has been the max punishment. But you are skirting the issue of cross-competition. Consequences within Leagues Cup was just assumed as a given for the guilty parties. Whether MLS would impose a sanction on its own competition for transgressions incurred during the League’s Cup final is where the discussion lands.
Mostly yes but they're also just really slow as a team. There's a reason why teams with pace can absolutely kill them. Orlando beat them by multiple goals twice already this season largely from just outrunning their crappy defense. Yannick Bright's stock should be going up a lot solely because he has to cover ground for both his position and Busquets basically being a statue not to mention Suarez and Messi not defending at all otherwise they'd probably have some even worse scorelines. They're very much an all offense no defense team and when you can actually shut them down they just start whining and fold quickly.
Yeah, I’ve noticed Bright more this year as well…if the announcers are saying his name all the time, if he’s always making plays, Miami can hang. But if he’s getting there a half step late a lot, they struggle. He’s basically the Dutch boy’s finger in the dike for that team. The thing about old players is that they’re all deteriorating, but unpredictably. To my eye, Busquets’ game fell off a cliff in the last 12 months. Inter hasn’t adapted to that.
Suarez launched a whole spate of spitting incidents in American sports this week. He at least had the wisdom to do it after the game. The others did so before and during the game, and the Florida Gators lost because of the penalty their guy got putting the USF team in range of the winning field goal.
