Rossi missed two of the three PKs he took (two during the game and then again, a miss in the =! shootout).
The shootouts for an extra point are fairly anticlimactic. Maybe in the third group game if a team knew the result mattered for advancement? I know that when the points are earned is more or less irrelevant, but it'll feel different I imagine.
Oh, my; Puebla somehow missed an open goal. Might not matter since they are already up two, but woof.
Similarly bad miss on the other end. NYCFC has been very close, and then there's the big miss on an open goal.
Pretty third from Puebla. I like the idea of the new format, but with so few teams advancing a loss in game one is pretty much the end of your tournament.
For a sense of how each game "should" turn out, the seedings are a useful guide on the relative match ups (except for San Diego, who is in the tournament rather than Vancouver). So far tonight: Toluca (3) and Columbus (4) -> tie. Result: tie (+1 to Toluca on the shootout) Montreal (25) and Leon (27) -> tie. Result: tie (+1 to Montreal on the shootout) NYCFC (19) and Puebla (35) -> NYCFC. Result: big win for Puebla Tigres (5) and Houston (15) -> Tigres. Result: win for Tigres Mazatlan (33) and LAFC (6) -> LAFC. Result TBD. San Diego (36) and Pachuca (26) -> wild card.' So we're at +1 result for LigaMx.
This format might leave the strong teams from either league out IF they have one bad game since only 4 out if 18 move on. Columbus still has a chance to move on if they win their next 2 games and hope 4+ other MLS teams don't win their 3 games.
It's been a long time since Liga MX could slap up MLS like this in the USA. Major quality regression must have happened in the last few years for MLS.
Essentially no midfield play as the end of LAFC-Mazatlan approaches. Lots of 4 v 6 or 3 v 7 attacking back and forth, with whomever is attacking really going for it but no support coming up behind. Both teams know they can't lose this one.
Martinez scored such a beauty in half one (LAFC), and since then has made pretty much every wrong choice with the ball. He's a turnover machine in half two.
Bounaga skies it! Mazatlan with the +1. Great night for LigaMx. LAFC coulda shoulda scored four in half one, easily, but then had zero shots on goal in half two.
Days like this make me sick to my stomach, and remind me that no matter how good things seem, they really aren't good at all.

Why would he be embarrassed? You think he’s not prepared for Liga MX success in a competition designed to appeal to Liga MX fans in the U.S.?
Well I said “designed to appeal” so I’m not predicting long term success. But it’s not like zero Liga MX fans have attended or watched this competition despite your use of absolutes.
