This seems notable: While I asked about the ideal roster size considering that the club is not part of the CONCACAF Champions Cup and the future of the US Open Cup up in the air (somewhere between 25 to 27, by the way), I think Ernst Tanner gave us a hint at what Leagues Cup looks like next year:… pic.twitter.com/CXhhTfaS2D— José Roberto Nuñez (@JoserNunez91) November 27, 2024 Philly GM Ernst Tanner: (Bold mine) So at least the Union think they won't be participating in Leagues Cup, which suggests a rather significant format shift.
They finished pretty low so can't read too much into it, but if I had to guess maybe they're going top 9 in each conference makes Leagues Cup to make it equal teams from each league, and then the rest play in the Open Cup.
I've asked around about this, and I haven't yet heard a denial.A Leagues Cup spokesperson said:"The Leagues Cup Organizing Committee is evaluating updates to the 2025 edition. More details will be announced in the coming weeks, as we prepare for the tournament in 2025." https://t.co/S3Qqlo49g7— Jonathan Tannenwald (@thegoalkeeper) November 27, 2024
Yeah, it seems the api to render tweets outside of tweeter has been damaged. Don't know if it is on BigSoccer or on Elon's interference
I always have this issue with Chrome, but not with Safari. Could be browser specific? I believe Microsoft’s edge browser runs on the same code as Chrome, so that could explain why this happens there if it does.
The Club World Cup would make Leagues Cup difficult in its current format. You have five teams (Seattle, Miami, Leon, Pachuca, Monterrey) that will need to have league games not scheduled from mid June to early-mid July. Then, if last years Leagues Cup format and timing was used, they would need to have from mid July to mid August off as well. That's basically mid June to mid August without league games being played. Something has to give.
Only cup competition that actually holds my attention aside from the UCL knockouts. Oh well, I’ll just watch less soccer if it goes away.
Although there is no information in this article about Liga MX, it does mention League Cup 2.0 in 2027. https://www.sportico.com/business/f...-invesment-commercial-rights-vote-1234818147/
With the small blip of 2027 mentioned and Tanner saying they didn't qualify, I wonder if his thought was it's been postponed until then. They have two tournaments next year with Gold Cup and CWC going on about the same time in June and July. Then in 2026 it is the expanded World Cup. With Liga MX voting on consolidation of their TV rights and still controlling media rights in Mexico for LC, makes you wonder what 2.0 might be? . Games in Mexico? Inclusion of Canadian Premier League? Cutting down the amount of teams but playing without stopping the season?
My guess? The inclusion of non-Concacaf clubs touring North America in the summer. A spiritual successor to the International Champions Cup.

All signs point to a paused or a greatly scaled back Leagues Cup this season. Which I did not expect. Its the right thing to do but MLS and Liga MX seemed more committed to the competition than that.
