It Soto was very dependent on Ledezma. Without him placing balls exactly where he wants them he always looks average or poor. They'd had a mental link.
I ran down some roster rules for the U20 finals. One thing I didn't see in the regulations document but maybe is elsewhere (?) are the dates, or general guidelines around the the dates that the provisional and final lists are due, which is probably what most people here most want to know. Either they're not out yet or I haven't found them. As for the rest: Players must be born no earlier than 2005 and no later than 2009. The provisional lists, of between 35 and 55 players, four of which must be GKs, are due at a date not yet (that I know of) specified. One thing I noticed is that players on the provisional list must have valid passports. I mention this for a couple reasons: First, because IIRC at least one guy was named to an official 2025 Gold Cup roster before FIFA cleared his switch; maybe this isn’t possible here? It maybe also means that switches after the deadline for the provisional list won’t be honored? I am probably reading too much into this (or reading it wrong) but who knows… FIFA says it won’t publish the provisional lists. Of course, countries can publish their own if they want. Players on the final list MUST be on the provisional list. The final list is 21 players, three who must be GKs. I don’t see a date yet. Injury/illness replacements can be named up to 24 hours before a team’s first kick-off. The replacement must come from the provisional list. (GKs can be replaced under these circumstances throughout the competition.) FIFA says it will publish the final lists. It also says the final lists must be accompanied by valid passports. I mean, sure, I get it, but won’t they already have these for the provisional lists, which by rule will include everyone who could be on the final lists? Ah well, who cares really.
I'll be honest, I don't know for sure, and I'm too lazy to look up the old regulations, but I'm sure they're out there somewhere. I don't have to guess but if I did, it "feels" new to me! It seems to me that maybe this makes some teams think "hey, maybe I should just put 5 GKs on the provisional roster to be safe" but a lot would need to go wrong for you to need them...
Chile released its provisional roster, which includes Yanez and Loyola. (A reminder that FIFA has said it won't release these, but Feds themselves obviously can do whatever.) That presumably means the deadline is close or has passed, which makes sense given we're at around a month out. https://www.anfp.cl/selecciones/la-...la-copa-mundial-de-la-fifa-sub-20-chile-2025/ Maybe worth noting: Six GKs, which I suppose gets at the point above. If you see other provisional roster drops, post them here!
This looks to be South Africa's preliminary squad. It's a bit smaller than Chile's; it also looks smaller than the FIFA required minimum, but maybe I'm just missing something. (I'm thinking this could technically be a camp callup list and not reflect their full provisional roster as submitted for tournament paperwork purposes, but I don't really know that.) Coach Raymond Mdaka has announced a preliminary squad for the Under-20 FIFA World Cup to be held in Chile next month. One bit of broadly applicable information in the U.S. U20 roster: The final roster for the World Cup is due to FIFA on Sept. 18.
It looks like Norway has effectively named its squad. https://www.fotball.no/landslag/norge-menn-20/2025/her-er-u20-landslagets-vm-tropp/ I am guessing it hasn't filed this with FIFA (pretty sure they still have time based on what we know about the timeline) so if someone gets hurt or whatever, they can still make changes. Also, I think there are too many guys there.
Zero Haalands on Mexico's roster. (Again, earlier than it needs to be submitted as far as I know, but it is the right number of guys.) https://miseleccion.mx/noticias/6147/Convocatoria-Oficial-de-México-Sub-20-para-el-Mundial-de-Chile
If this is accurate, should be a busy week for U20 roster news. You can see things filling out here (note that some of the rosters listed are not announced final squads): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_FIFA_U-20_World_Cup_squads
One thing you can count on as U20 tournaments approach is detailed coverage of Nigeria's team. I've seen reports discussing players whose callups were denied and also stories about their tune-up opponents (Chile and Australia). It's very exciting!

I’m not as deeply rooted in dual nats as some of you are, are there any concerning or even just interesting names on here when it comes to the US?
Vargas has already switched, so him. Other than that, Emi Ochoa is a solid goalkeeping prospect, but certainly not can’t miss.
"AC Milan have chosen not to make two of their young players available for the Italian national team’s U20 World Cup campaign. According to Luca Bianchin of La Gazzetta dello Sport, Davide Bartesaghi and Lorenzo Torriani will not play in the U20 World Cup, and they will remain with Massimiliano Allegri’s first-team squad. However, this is not too much of a shock because other clubs have also chosen to withhold their players from flying off for the tournament. The World Cup will take place from September 27 to October 19 in Chile."
That feels less than normal. I am surprised Vargas can’t get a full national team look for Mexico honestly. He’s impressive from what I’ve seen.
I'm seeing reports that Morocco will announce its team tomorrow, which I guess is when we'll see several squadlists published. Other tidbits: Ukraine has a player who's currently at Montreal. And one guy on New Zealand's roster is too old for this tournament according to Transfermarkt, which I guess must be wrong?
It is rather difficult to hide the name "Zidane" on a France roster, no matter the squad. Bernard Diomède a composé une 𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞 de 21 joueurs pour participer à la 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐞 𝐝𝐮 𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐞 𝐔𝟐𝟎 au Chili 🇨🇱 (du 27 septembre au 19 octobre). 🔜 1er rendez-vous pour les Bleuets le 29 septembre face à l’Afrique du Sud !Toutes les infos 👉 https://t.co/UT50avR8d9 pic.twitter.com/tVJqKGY387— FFF (@FFF) September 19, 2025
FIFA spoke with Keller about the U.S. run in 1989, when they made the semis despite not actually qualifying on the field. Good times. https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments/mens/u20worldcup/chile-2025/articles/kasey-keller-interview
Here are the full squadlists. https://fdp.fifa.org/assetspublic/ce243/pdf/SquadLists-English.pdf There are two '09s, which is the youngest you can be at this tournament. They're both on Nigeria's roster. I see six '08s. The dude on New Zealand that TM said was an '04 appears according to this document to be an '05. And four of our guys have the same middle name.
Oh, and I didn't spot any obvious "some guy is on a roster here who was on another country's roster in qualifying" Aviles-like names -- I am guessing if there was anyone like that they'd have shown up on the FIFA citizenship tracker page. But maybe I missed one? I do miss things.
It's almost here! This is the schedule: https://www.fifa.com/en/tournaments...025/scores-fixtures?country=US&wtw-filter=ALL We don't play until matchday 3.
