River defo losing next game, their entire midfield is suspended. Their hope will be that Monterrey doesn't win, which honestly could happen... Urawa has shown more than them so far despite losing both games.
Let's see if LAFC can get even a single point in this CWC traveling the country. At three different venues. Far away from comfy BMO Stadium.
I was rather skeptical of this expanded format, and dislike a number of FIFA decisions related to it, but I admit I am warming up to it. There have been some very entertaining matches. And very few blowouts. On the menu today: - A replay of last year's FIFA Intercontinental Cup final between Real Madrid and Pachuca - The "Abu Dhabi derby" between Al Ain and Man City (Al Ain is based in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi) Still waiting for our first Asian win at this CWC but that could happen at Al Hilal - Salzburg. Indeed. That's quite a change from GD. UEFA always used head-to-head but FIFA resisted it. Will it be the same at the World Cup next year?
While Ulsan may have fought valiantly against Fluminense, they have been a complete embarrassment for the Asian club game to date at the CWC: 2012 CWC | Ulsan HD - CF Monterrey 1:3 (Round 2) 2012 CWC | Sanfrecce Hiroshima - Ulsan HD 3:2 (5th Place) 2020 CWC | Tigres UANL - Ulsan HD 2:1 (Round 2) 2020 CWC | Al Duhail - Ulsan HD 3:1 (5th Place) 2025 CWC | Ulsan HD - Mamelodi Sundowns 0:1 (Group Stage) 2025 CWC | Fluminense FC - Ulsan HD 4:2 (Group Stage) 2025 CWC | Borussia Dortmund - Ulsan HD ??? Six matches. Six losses. (Two of them are to fellow AFC clubs, but still...)
57,393 at the Rose Bowl for River-Rayados. Are things better organized now at the venue compared to PSG-Atleti?
One last thing about home field advantage (I promise ): Harry Kane was interviewed after the Boca match and essentially said that the victory was sweeter because it felt like a road game in Miami. He did not say, well both teams travelled and had to prepare in ways they were not accustomed to and had to sleep at hotels and had to train in places they were not familiar with so it felt like a true neutral site blah, blah, blah. Uh no. He basically said it felt like the Bombinera in Buenos Aires so winning on the road made the victory even more gratifying.
Atmosphere can be a factor, all else being equal. Otherwise travel (or lack thereof for one party) weighs more heavy than "noise in the stands".
It was way better yesterday than on Sunday, that’s for sure. The weather yesterday was also sooooo much better. Pleasantly surprised by the number of River fans. Skeptical about that 57k figure though: I was at both the PSG-Atletico game and River-Monterrey, and the crowds looked about the same. If it was really 57k last night, that would mean it was about 30% empty and it really didn’t look like that. I wish I took a panoramic shot, but I was so into the game that I forgot to. Both set of fans brought that energy though, singing all game long. It was crazy fun, despite the poor match on the pitch. Definitely a much livelier atmosphere than PSG-Atletico, that’s for sure!
I've been amazed by atmospheres from Japanese, Tunisian, Brazilian and Inter Miami supporters. I'm going to make some comments at the end of the group stage.
Brought to you by our new overlord PIF. Unlike Real Madrid, Salzburg knows they are not coming back into CWC any time soon. They should try getting that money bag now or never.
I”d like to remind everyone that one of us picked Juve to disappoint and another one picked them as the surprise team to make a run at the Cup..
