Then I must be the only one that carries a wallet (that has my ID, TX DL and CCs) everywhere I go. Exception only being when I walk or jog around the neighborhood. As I said, if I were here illegally and a heads up was given I wouldn't show up. For whatever the reason they are there I just wouldn't do it. A game I can watch on TV isn't worth it. Before anyone says that it's their right or whatever, the same thing is happening here in the RGV. ICE is hitting up flea markets. I have several friends who are here illegally. Do they complain they can't go to a flea market on the weekends anymore? Nope. They aren't dumb to do it anymore. They know the consequences if they do. They'll rather just stay home or go to the mall or hit up garage sales.
It's not really about those here illegally, because at the end of the day the government has a legal right to deport them. The question is what kind of proof is needed at the stadium to avoid being detained.
What do you mean what proof is needed? You don't have to carry your US passport around in the US if you are a citizen as I have ridiculously heard people say recently.. Your state issue ID is sufficient. As someone else posted, it's up to the officer to check your status if that's what they are going to do at the stadium. If you don't want to take an ID because you don't drive then I don't know what to tell you. I'm just here posting on a soccer forum.
It was clearly stated that non citizens need proof of legal status while citizens do not. The question was how would anyone know if one is a citizen? ID is absolutely not enough for that.
Best bet is to call ICE directly and ask them what a legal non-citizen will need as proof in case they get detained. Go straight to the source. You won't find much info in a soccer forum other than life experiences (and those are case by case basis so they differ) and/or because they Google information and post it here.
Using a burner phone, of course. The fact the question has to be asked seems very problematic to me when you are talking about foreign tourists and others attending an international soccer tournament.
In broader immigration lingo "citizens" includes permanent residents. For instance if you enter the US at an airport green card holders join the same line as US citizens. Also, if it's a private event on private property they can deny you access for any reason. In many countries, such as Germany, Italy, France, Spain and Argentina it's mandatory to carry i.d. anyway, so it's won't be over burdensome to many visitors. As a dumb Britisher I never realized this until I moved to Switzerland.
I don't think many foreign tourists who come to support their teams (if any are, in fact, doing so) will have a US driver license.
If anyone is too scared to ask over the phone then best bet is to just stay home. I don't know what other advise I can give.
Really? Maybe I should tell my wife and her family not to go out anymore or they might get sent back to Mexico even though they have green cards.
People with green cards have had issues in the last few months. I've seen a handful of stories pop up from credible news sources.
You’re completely avoiding the fact the ICE doesn’t patrol the Final Four or the Super Bowl or the World Series.
I am going to use a bit of logic. If the objective is to deport people with Green cards then it is easier to just not accept them back into the country when they leave and are trying to get back, don't you think? My wife along with her parents, which all are green card holders, just crossed the border yesterday into Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico. They could've easily just denied entrance if green card holders were targets too. My uncle, another green card holder, goes every weekend without fail to Mexico (same city, Reynosa). No problems either. My in-laws do the same. No problems at all. Wife's cousin, also a green card holder, goes to Mexico then comes back with no issues. That's just the people I know. It's easier to deny entry instead of deporting green card holders for no reason at all if they really were a target. What you want me to say? Abolish ICE, abolish the US government, give Mexico back the lands that were stolen, send all the gringos back to where they came from, from the mouth of the Rio Grande River to the Atlantic Ocean Mexico will be free? Is that better for you? I was just giving answers as to what can be done since crookeddy seems to have legit concerns. That's why I referred him to the source directly instead of listening to us who pretend to know but we don't know shit. Even though I don't know him personally I don't want him to receive wrong info from us.
Green cards = permanent residency, but of course that's not the only way someone is in the country legally. Most foreign nationals living and working in the US legally aren't green card holders but, rather, here on some sort of visa that allows them to live and work here legally. And, yes, those people are being detained despite their legal status.
This is incorrect. Ice representatives have said that Id is not enough documentation to prove legal residency because of states like California who provide them regardless of legal status.
They won't get sent back to Mexico but they can be detained unless they have those cards on them literally at all times.
The current law for permanent residents is that they need proof of legal residency on them at all times. However citizens do not need to carry proof. My original question was, how would they know that you're a citizen of you're not required to carry proof. Of course it's all hypothetical because I'm 90 percent sure that their presence at the stadiums will be symbolic. But still, that 10 percent doubt nags.
So green card holders are being deported or not? But if anyone here legally is being deported, if they leave the country for any reason then denying entry is a more logical thing the government can do, if that is the objective. Don't you think denying entry is much easier and more effective to do than deporting? Hundreds of thousands of people just in the Southern border Port of Entries alone cross back and forth every single day. That's a perfect opportunity to deny entry instead of looking for legal non-citizens in the interior of US just to deport them. It isn't happening. My guy, I told you that green card holders need their cards at all times. I don't think you are reading my replies. The reason I know legal non-residents need it all times is because they are literally told that when they first get their "papers".
Are you stupid or something? Me: "They need to have it on them at all times" You: "You are not listening, I said they need to have it on them at all times" OK...
The country with the 6th best all time World Cup record is the focal point of the 'jokes'? What does that say about the 76 or so 'other' participants that sit below them I wonder.
