Not a ref, but I thought Ortiz was not good enough. Did nothing to manage the Saudis shithousery. At some point, refs have to stop "managing players" and start disciplining. Didn't cost the US anything, but I hate to see players play that way and get away with it.
The card to Luna was bizarre. Was that VAR? The play happened, then the guy fell over, then play continued for what seemed like a minute, literally, then we get a whistle and a card for a foul…? Or am I incorrect…?
in case anyone did not happen to see it: Concacaf Gold Cup: Tempers flare between United States and Saudi Arabia near end of match | FOX Sports
So Cornejo had a great, if textbook, DOGSO red card. Then a couple minutes later he had...(3:40 timestamp)?
It wasn’t just the Saudis. He could have pulled his yellow at least a dozen times that he didn’t, and a lot of those would have gone to us.
All in all, I thought his bars for both fouls and cards were too low—though sadly not necessarily inconsistent with a lot of CONCACAF games. When I tried to figure out if he was playing advantage on some plays I thought were fouls, I never saw an advantage signal. I did not feel it was a strong game. I don’t know much about the KSA team at all, but almost wonder if they had heard what CONCACAF refs will let go and came out to be extra physical to take advantage of it,
I believe the live broadcast highlighted other angles which made it very surprising to me that it got overturned. If VAR only focused on the angle from behind we mainly see here, it could look like a dive with contact having no force. So VAR telling a story and not giving all angles?
I was unclear/didn't see what came out, but when the call was overturned the referee had a yellow out indicating he was rescinding that so it sounds like yellow.
Yeah, that's what I thought. T&T players were going to him to ask that it get overturned. Of course, if it was a foul it's supposed to be a red card since it was a push. But given everything over the last year I actually wonder if the powers that be would argue for yellow there because it wasn't obviously cyncial and he was in the vicinty of the ball.
VAR did show multiple angles to Cornejo at the monitor, but the replay from approximately the ref’s angle (shown on the broadcast right after the OFR) shows why he called it on the field: it looked like more of a hold rather than a soft push.
Anyone watching GUA-PAN and have a red for that challenge at the very start of the second half? Escobedo seemed a little lenient. Good lesson for all referees that you have to be locked in from the very start of a period of play.
So the excuse on-field is either what you suggest, in that he wasn't locked in and didn't see it (admittedly, it is not necessarily something you're looking for there, as I think the focus is naturally on the upper body) OR he saw it and felt he didn't mean it and didn't follow-through? Regardless, what's the justification by the VAR for not intervening there?
Sorry, missed this. Terry Vaughn had Costa Rica - Mexico KO match in his first major tournament, as he was seemingly tipped for WC10 (ahead of Marrufo). It did, uh, not go well. Dickerson in a similar spot today if he gets that match. Though, it being a first round game makes it different, I think. Also, things have changed some generally and whatever you think about their relative merits (adjusted to the time period, too), I think Dickerson is more prepared for a tough test like that than Vaughn was back then. Long way of saying I don't think it would shake out the same way. But the similarities are striking if it happens.
The play is about 7:42 in the highlights video. From one of the angles they showed on the broadcast (not here in the highlights, unfortunately), I think there's a pretty clear push in the back by the attacker who heads the ball in.
It does, but at the same time #3 recovers very quickly and he doesn't appeal for the foul at all; sort of just hangs his head at conceding and not being strong enough there. Player reaction can't be the be-all, end-all; but it never looks or feels good when you wave off a goal like that and realize no one from Jamaica was going to ask for it.
Though CRC v MEX seems relatively innocent by being a pool play game between 2 teams that are already qualified to the KO round, surely this will be a contested match. There's a lot on the line headed into the KO for both teams. They'll both want to avoid a QF match against the USA, so winning the group is important. Group A winners will presumably get Saudi (or T&T) while the 2nd place team will get the US. Also, traveling from Vegas to Phoenix will be easier than going to Minneapolis, although that shouldn't matter much since all teams in Group A & D get the same rest. Dickerson's personality should lend him to handling this game ok, but it could also get him into some trouble too. CRC v MEX should be a lot of fun
For the record, it hasn’t been assigned yet. I’m just speculating. The direct impact on who the US’s opponent is might prevent it. Though, there are only so many options.
