Looking it up online, I read that UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin believes that removing the away goal rule was the correct decision. He argues that the rule was important in the past, but that it now dissuades home teams from attacking in the first leg. I only follow the Serie A teams in Europe so I can’t comment on everyone else. As far as Italian teams are or were concerned however, traditionally, they usually played defensively on the road and offensively at home. Although it’s changing, I think Italian clubs in Europe anyway, still played the same way. I don’t know if other UEFA clubs play that way though but maybe that is one of the reasons on why they got rid of the rule.
We have our first upset of this Champions Cup! And it's the same "culprit" as before, with Herediano dropping RSL by winning on the road like they did to Toluca last year.
Per my XFinity guide, the US TV schedule for this round (home team first, all times US Eastern): Tuesday, March 4 FC Cincinnati (USA) vs. Tigres UANL (MEX), 6:30 p.m., FS2 Pumas UNAM (MEX) vs. LD Alajuelense (CRC), 8:30 p.m., FS2 / TUDN LAFC (USA) vs. Columbus Crew (USA), 10:30 p.m., FS2 / TUDN Wednesday, March 5 Chivas (MEX) vs. Club América (MEX), 8:30 p.m., Unimás / TUDN Herediano (CRC) vs. LA Galaxy (USA), 8:30 p.m., FS2 Seattle Sounders (USA) vs. Cruz Azul (MEX), 10:30 p.m., FS2 Vancouver Whitecaps (CAN) vs. CF Monterrey (MEX), 10:30 p.m., none AFAIK Thursday, March 6 Inter Miami (USA) vs. Cavalier (JAM), 8:00 p.m., FS2 Tuesday, March 11 Cruz Azul (MEX) vs. Seattle Sounders (USA), 8:30 p.m., FS1 Tigres UANL (MEX) vs. FC Cincinnati (USA), 10:30 p.m., FS1 / TUDN Columbus Crew (USA) vs. LAFC (USA), 10:30 p.m., none AFAIK Wednesday, March 12 CF Monterrey (MEX) vs. Vancouver Whitecaps (MEX), 8:30 p.m., FS1 / TUDN Club América (MEX) vs. Chivas (MEX), 10:30 p.m., TUDN LA Galaxy (USA) vs. Herediano (CRC), 10:30 p.m., FS1 Thursday, March 13 Cavalier (JAM) vs. Inter Miami (USA), 8:00 p.m., FS2 / TUDN LD Alajuelense (CRC) vs. Pumas UNAM (MEX), 10:00 p.m., FS2 / TUDN ...with the games not shown on TV most likely broadcast, at least in Spanish, through Concacaf's YouTube channel. The US TV schedule for the quarterfinals: - All the games will be on TUDN in Spanish; the 2nd leg of Cruz Azul-América will also be shown on Unimás. - In English, the first legs of the quarterfinals will be on FOX Sports 2... until LAFC-Inter Miami. That game, and all the subsequent ones, will be on FS1.
Do Inter Miami have to win to advance or is this like the Club World Cup where we're gonna have Messi around no matter what?
A quick note on the order of games for the semifinals: - In the confirmed Cruz Azul/Tigres matchup, both teams arrive on 8 points (results from the first round are not taken into consideration); but thanks to their superior GD/Seattle collapsing on the road, Cruz Azul will host the second leg. - On the other side of the bracket: LAFC and Miami are both on 6 pts., ahead of Pumas on 5 and Vancouver on 3. Thus, Vancouver are guaranteed to play the second leg on the road if they advance, unless they win by at least 2 while LAFC advance on penalties after a 1-0 loss. As for Pumas, their only chance of doing the honors would be to win tonight and LAFC advance with a tie or on penalties. Wait - I forgot that we have extra time in the earlier rounds. For Pumas's possibilities, it makes no difference; as for Vancouver, they would have to win by three if LAFC advance with a loss in ET or on penalties, or deal with a Goals-For race if they win by two.
And now the order of games is official, with the host team for the return leg listed first: --- Inter Miami (USA) vs. Pumas UNAM (MEX)/Vancouver Whitecaps (CAN) Cruz Azul (MEX) vs. Tigres UANL (MEX) --- Mind you, Miami have the best record from the R16 and QF (9 points) of any of the potential semifinalists, leaving them with the inside track on hosting the Final if Concacaf don't exercise their prerogative to schedule the game at a neutral venue.
We have the semifinals on Wednesday and Thursday in the next two weeks... and for those watching in the U.S., all the matches will be on FOX Sports 1 with the exception of the return leg of Cruz Azul/Tigres, bumped to FS2 in favor of LIV Golf
