Hey everyone, First things first: methinks it's time to rename the forum, no @edcalvi @IASocFan @Wiso ? Now that we've almost completed a full Champions Cup qualifying cycle under the new format, one holdover from the CCL era remains Mexico sending teams before everyone else. And after the NBA-style play-in concluded this weekend, the following Apertura quarterfinalists will seek the first tickets in the 2025 edition: Club América vs. Club León CF Monterrey vs. Atlético San Luis Tigres UANL vs. Club Puebla Pumas UNAM vs. Chivas
Thanks for reminding me that we had to rename the forum. I had totally forgotten about that detail. You're the best @Paul Calixte
And we have our first team in! Probably could've posted this in midweek, but I wanted to be respectful and wait for the mathematical certainty 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3]
Well then, looks like our local elite wanted to punch their tickets nice and early 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3]
So, um, gotta address this here: Major League Soccer will not send its first teams to the U.S. Open Cup in 2024, instead opting to enter teams from MLS Next Pro. MLS commish Don Garber hinted at this last week and today it's official.— Kyle Bonagura (@BonaguraESPN) December 15, 2023 As far as anyone knows, the Champions Cup berth for the Open Cup winner would remain regardless; but even with an easier path for lower-league clubs, this is shocking, and all the more if the US federation accedes to it.
So the USSF shot down the above... While we see how that plays out, there is a tangible update on the qualifying front: América took home the Apertura title, and have the inside track on Liga MX's top berth after a record point haul in the regular season. 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1 or MEX2] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX1, MEX2 or MEX3]
Great move by the USSF. The US Open Cup is a historic tournament that deserves respect and it's our equivalent to the FA Cup.

Been a while since we checked in with the field for our next continental championship, so here goes a regional round-up! CARIBBEAN & CENTRAL AMERICA ...ok, we'll presumably circle back to them in late May/early June as the draws for the Caribbean Cup, Caribbean Shield and Central American Cup approach. NORTH AMERICA With two matchdays to go in the Liga MX Clausura, we have a couple important updates to acknowledge: Our first seeded team has already been confirmed, as no one can catch defending champs América in the full-year table! As well, Monterrey will finish as, at worst, the best non-finalist team; the other full-year berth is currently a three-way race between Chivas, Pumas and Toluca... yeah, we're slowly learning that Liga MX finally rewarding regular-season performance has made continental success harder than ever for the rest of us After three more sides get in through the end of the Clausura, the first qualifiers north of the Río Grande (...if any) will emerge from Leagues Cup in July and August: 🤩 Every 🏆 starts with a journey 💪The #LeaguesCup2024 bracket pres. Club América [MEX1] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX2 or MEX3] 3. CF Monterrey [MEX2, MEX3, MEX4 or MEX5]
With the Liga MX Clausura regular season wrapping up over the weekend, Chivas pulled away from the pack with a derby win over Atlas to grab the last full-year-table berth. 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX2 or MEX3] 3. CF Monterrey [MEX2, MEX3, MEX4 or MEX5] 4. Chivas [MEX2, MEX4, MEX5 or MEX6]
Question: In Europe, depending on and the coefficients ratings of the top 1-4th place clubs in each league aspire to make the UEFA Champions League as there is a lot of TV revenue and sponsorship money involved in making and playing through the tournament. Winner’s purses are not the main incentive for clubs as opposed to qualifying each year. Does anyone know how much money is involved with MLS and other Concacaf teams in making the Champions League Tournament or rather, how much money clubs get for qualifying?
Good q; the only insight I have to offer is that the winners of the regional tournaments run by Concacaf - the Central American and Caribbean Cups - take home $500,000 each (which used to be the CCL winner's prize money), so there's tangible progress. Now, we have an update out of Mexico: the two biggest clubs in the country advanced in their respective Clausura quarterfinals tonight. América and Chivas will face each other in the semifinals... unless Pumas shock Cruz Azul (again ). What does that mean for us? Pumas are the next team without a Champions Cup ticket in the full-year table; so they will either reach the Clausura Final on their own merit, or they'll receive a hand-me-down berth from whoever wins the Clásico Nacional. Either way, we have a new qualifier! 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX2 or MEX3] 3. CF Monterrey [MEX2, MEX3, MEX4 or MEX5] 4. Chivas [MEX2, MEX4, MEX5 or MEX6] 5. Pumas UNAM [MEX2, MEX3, MEX5 or MEX6]
And... exhale Cruz Azul left it late in both the QFs and the SFs, but they did the bare minimum to advance and return to a domestic Final! They also wrap up our Liga MX contingent, give or take a Mexican medalist in the next Leagues Cup (with Toluca first in line in case of a hand-me-down). 2025 Champions Cup Qualifiers 1. Club América [MEX1] 2. Tigres UANL [MEX3] 3. CF Monterrey [MEX4] 4. Chivas [MEX5] 5. Pumas UNAM [MEX6] 6. Cruz Azul [MEX2]
As it turns out, the Haitian Fed has confirmed that it has qualified teams to the upcoming Caribbean tournaments: Ngl, it's a special occasion seeing a border team (Ouanaminthe) play internationally...
Concacaf has announced the pots for the Caribbean and Central American Cup draws this Thursday (5:00 and 6:30 p.m. EDT respectively): Concacaf confirms 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup participating clubs and draw potshttps://t.co/n2dJOx7im3 🔗— Concacaf Champions Cup (@TheChampions) June 3, 2024 Concacaf confirma clubes participantes y bombos del sorteo para la Copa Centroamericana 2024https://t.co/w36xQTGEaY 🔗— Concacaf Champions Cup (@TheChampions) June 4, 2024 I'm surprised that the Haitian clubs went from a yearlong hiatus right into Pot 3 (might say something about how Concacaf rates the Trinibago league?)... and even moreso that Real Estelí are in the same pot as last year in spite of their historic run. At least their league got rewarded with an extra berth...
While the Leagues Cup will be on the more immediate horizon in North America, yesterday's draw gave us an important update on where the US Open Cup berth may be decided: Here's the FINAL Hosting Priority Order | #USOC2024 *Sorry @SportingKC, it's not you this year pic.twitter.com/jmJeXkvQcQ— U.S. Open Cup (@opencup) July 20, 2024
Maybe they update this later today... but as of right now, there's no official Spanish-language TV coverage for the Central American Cup in the US. Perhaps Concacaf will show the games on its YouTube channel? Leagues Cup also continues this week... as well as the CFU Club Shield, now at the quarterfinal round, with teams (including defending champs Robinhood) aiming to reach the Final and qualify for the Caribbean Cup.
Robinhood is out, they lost to Antigua and Barbuda's Grenades who will, for Caribbean Cup spot, face team of Dominica - Dublanc. Robinhood qualified to the Champions Cup last season while this campaign is already over. In other semifinal Jamaica or Dominican Republic will get third team (out of 10) in Caribbean Cup.
And Jamaica does the honors, with Arnett Gardens rounding out the field for the Caribbean Cup. Arnett Gardens and Grenades FC qualified to the 2024 Concacaf Caribbean Cup 🏆 Read more https://t.co/BsVjbMncQT 🔗— Concacaf Champions Cup (@TheChampions) August 3, 2024
Three Jamaican sides in one group. Way too many. I really don't understand why they draw teams from same nations in same groups while there is as many teams (from one nation) as groups. OK, Arnett is now third Jamaican team and they cannot avoid Jamaican team, but they could've placed them in other group. Cavalier will play all of its group matches (that are two home, two away) in Jamaica. Their away games are vs Jamaican teams and will host both non-Jamaican teams. CONCACAF should consider add more variety to CC, especially if Grenades do well. Robinhood was great last year, Guadalupean team was good too, they beat two Trinibago teams last season. Just to spread the games little bit more around the region, to give teams more opportunity than 2-3 games in one week and that's it.
