So, looking for who we might grab this winter, I noticed that Rueben Neves is out of contract in the summer, meaning free to sign right now. The word is that while he did go to Saudi, and has been very good there, he's done with it. Now, A. Madrid are interested, as is Porto. But he already has shown that in his prime (28), he's willing to think more broadly that big European clubs (he had the same options when he left Wolves).

IMO, this is the sort of "moonshot" signing that could transform the club. yeah, massive salary, but not Messi massive. and he immediately and massively upgrades all three lines. He makes everyone on the field better.
I would love to land someone transformative like this.
    I know, not gonna happen.
But I do hope Burns is thinking along those lines, as well as being more realistic.
I mean, CRon as a moonshot was flashy, but would we really have been that much better with him? He improves one line, and unlike Messi, very much was showing his age.

Lee has said we're going the 2 DP/4 U22 build at least to start. We already have our 2 DPs.

Did they have to set that in stone with the league already? Or can they change their minds on that if they have an avenue to a very excellent senior signing? I can't find that info on a goog.

It's not set in "stone" until roster compliance if I remember right, but it's been a year since I thought about it lol.

From the MLS site for last year:
MLS rosters will feature six discretionary spending roster spots with the flexibility to choose between two models, tailorable to a team’s roster-building strategy.

Clubs will be required to submit and announce their 2025 roster construction path by the Roster Compliance Date on Feb. 21.

Interesting info from the season opening presser regarding players coming in. Lee said we will bring in a "double-digit number" of players. right now, we're at three.
We were not waiting for a new head coach to sign players. Though Lee and Wicky apparently agree on the SKC targeted players. So at least there won't be any revision to the list.
Lee said we would be active "throughout the window."

I do wonder if, with the arrival of Wicky, we might not pursue some young Swiss players.
I really like the idea of bringing in Tim Meyer, a really strong Swiss, 21 year old Dmid (ranked 27th best young mid in the world, but still at Grasshoppper. Value-wise, in our range. We have the U-22 spots to sign him.

Did he have much of a chance at the first team? He looked like maybe SKC2.
I mean, we know the GA draftee is on the roster. What are the odds on the other first rounder being signed?

SKCII always seemed his likely destination, yes. But given our current roster, who knows.

It's interesting that the player and his agent both saw SKC as a "big opportunity" and one that "doesn't come around every day" and that the clubs refusal to sell "clipped the wings" of Inga.
i mean none of that got him signed, but it does say to me that we are a very attractive destination to a good section of South Americans.

As evident by the number of S. Americans on the current (zero) and previous rosters (1 in 2025).

But we could be. I think what that says to me is that players would come. We may not be mining with vigilance.

That's a shame though. Would be a good position to get a real winner in.

Maybe the new group will do a better job recruiting the extremely fertile S. American market. At this point, one is more than zero and you have to start somewhere.

RIP to whoever's crusade of hope to get Espinoza here from San Jose. Looks like Nashville got him.

Given that several other clubs were mentioned as being in the running for him, and we were not one of them, we might not have been very close to signing Espinoza.
I would have loved to have him, and if he had been signed on max TAM deal, I would have been a bit disappointed. But he's a DP, and has been noted we're a 2 and 4 club, so he wasn't an option.
Maybe he's the level of talent for whom we break the project, but probably not.
As we are reporting for medicals today, though I would like to hear some news. I want a new centerback to be signed. I want a dmid to be rumored at least.

btw, there is no update on Shehu. I do find it interesting that the top destination is thought to be Valencia, including a backiup Dmid who seems to be very similar to Shehu (same value). The club spent the year selling players to build a war chest, and now are allegedly buying a striker who wipes out everything they saved.
And they have and are keeping a Dmid who appears to be of a much greater profile.
    Why would they want Shehu?
There are no rumors, but I think it might be Greece or us.

Looking more at this, this would be a bad signing. A CB who just joined his new club in the fall, and has played less than 400 minutes for a mid-table Hungarian team. For $3m it’s a pass for me.

With the scale of our needs and the season quickly approaching...we're probably involved with any decent young player that could fit into our budget.

I know TMarkt is basically us guessing at values, but clubs around the world do use their values as starting points, and this price is more than 10x his TM value.
I agree with Buzz. He sounds like an interesting 4th/5th CB at a low price. But a lot of folks are pursuing him, maybe there is something we haven't seen in his profile?
