    SAN JOSE NEWS!!!

BREAKING: The San Jose Earthquakes are nearing a deal to sign forward Timo Werner from RB Leipzig, per sources.

Deal close but not 100% done. Werner would be a DP.

Werner, 29, has 57 caps with Germany. Scored 24 goals.

Wow, that is potentially huge news.

While almost everybody (and pretty much every Germany fan) despises Timo Werner, he could just dominate in MLS.
He probably won't, but he absolutely could.

He was a machine in his first stint at RB Leipzig. Not so good in the EPL, though.

I suspect San Jose can pick him up on the cheap as RB Leipzig want no part of him anymore.

His market value (on transfermarkt) has plummeted. From 80 million Euro in 2019 and 64 million Euro (he had a 50+ million release clause) when Chelsea grabbed him in 2020 to 3 million now. Just a year ago, it was 15 million.

I am actually surprised they did not ship him to NYRB last summer or in the off season.

That ought to shut up BeerKing!

In all honesty, I want to see Bruce resurrect another franchise. Last year was a step in the right direction for the Quakes. I'd like to see Bruce's work continue on that upward trajectory.

Timo Werner to San Jose. Confirmed by Romano.

Now I can't talk shit about SJE. They still need to sign more players that can help him out.

Last year was an improvement, but the offseason has not given us a good feeling about continuing to improve. Losing Espinoza for nothing seemed like a poor front office move, and then they got rid of Rodrigues, Bruno Wilson, MAK, and Martinez. They gave new contracts to Beau Leroux and Chico Arango. No new signings at all. Timo Werner's signing is apparently imminent. I expected 1-2 defenders to be signed, and an attacking midfielder, maybe a goalkeeper upgrade. Unless the youngsters really level up (Ricketts, Munie, Roberts, etc.) and Romney has another good year left at 32 years old and Daniel finds his best form, we are going to struggle on D again.

Plus, no news on the sale of the team. Total silence since they announced the plan to sell last June/July(?). Would be nice to know that we have an owner that wanted to invest in the team and sees a future where SJ is worth spending money on.

    Sigh...

If only they had a great winger to play into him. They should have tried to get that Argentinian that Nashville just signed.

I totally understand. That said, there was no hint of this move before today right? Hopefully there are some more to come in the near future. Plus with Bruce you can almost guarantee a few veteran nostalgia signings too.

    Really good breakdown.

Just to chime in as another RSL fan, I think they completely missed the chance to sell Luna to Europe or Mexico for good money the last 3 seasons.

They kept him too long and he has been found out. Not good enough to carry an MLS team for multiple playoff cycles, doesn’t make players around him better, and doesn’t have even come close to the production to justify anyone coming in with a big offer or becoming a DP.

RSL is now just stuck praying he can make the World Cup roster over a premier league player or possibly the best player in Liga MX, get some playing time and raise his stock there.

They gambled on him being a U-22 that could be the focal point of an MLS team and then had their second most losses in club history and the biggest season-over-season regression. (If you don’t count MLS is Back)

I think RSL looked at his Young Player of the Year tag and set the price similarly to Pepi and Diego Rossi, which no one in the world is going to pay for a 22 year old with his resume.

IMO, the defenders they let go will hurt them more than losing Espinoza. They still need better players because Timo won't be able to do everything by himself.

They need a much better keeper for starters. Daniel's regression seriously hurt their playoff chances last season.

Why isn’t “RSL keeps him and tries to win trophies” one of your options?

Trophies? We are talking about trophies? This is a player that has not scored in, assisted in, or won a single knockout soccer game for RSL since three Octobers ago.

Individually 57th in a 30 team league in Goal Contributions. 26 teams in MLS have a player with more. 5 of his former RSL teammates had more.
In the bottom half of RSL attackers in the history of the club in G+A per 90.

He has 3 assists in his last 47 games for RSL. (Nearly 18 months ago)

Probably the most overrated player in Major League Soccer? I can’t find someone with more hype and less output this last season?

Nobody questions that he had a bad year. But he’s a good player. You’re lucky to have him.

I mean, like based on vibes or something?

Because if you take his career and compare it to every RSL attacker in history with 2K minutes or more, it doesn’t stack up well. I think that Goals + Assists per 90 is the best way to rate effectiveness of an attacking player.

Luna’s 0.46 numbers in his career is in the bottom half. That means he has been less effective than the average RSL attacker since 2005.

He has produced less, won less, and advanced less. I just am not sure how to justify him being “good” in MLS other than things like “he has a good touch” etc.

    They already have Aaron Herrera.
Would they use him more as a RW?

DC only has 3 true fullbacks on the roster, and they were playing Herrera more advanced at times with Conner Antley behind him when Weiler arrived last year.

Timo Werner is bargain basement leavings and a headcase to boot! Other teams can't wait to get rid of him and offload his ass on some unsuspecting suckers.

Werner's loan spell with Tottenham ended on 31 May 2025..., Werner was not part of the club's plans. They wanted him to leave during the summer transfer window, but Werner couldn't agree to terms with clubs that expressed interest. During the 2025–26 season, Werner made the RB Leipzig matchday squad twice, playing a single minute as a substitute in September..

Even still, he's 29 years old and has a game entirely based on speed, and he hasn't even been a decent player for those teams since 2023.
