As it is now August, it's time for the new thread (unless I missed where someone else started one). Today is the 125th birthday of a little club of "street kickers" in Eicken, Germany. Today they are known as Borussia Mönchengladbach. Happy Birthday to my Foals! A nice slideshow may be found at https://www.kicker.de/elf-meilenste...ladbacher-vereinsgeschichte-1135017/slideshow A video is here: https://www.facebook.com/watch?v=761614929654072
Rest In Peace to my beloved Morecambe FC, it seems inevitable that they will fold. Terrible ownership that just refuses to sell. https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...e-fc-fans-to-lose-everything-without-takeover
Sheffield Wednesday is in real trouble. Between them, the Premier League clubs made more than 6 billion pounds ($8 billion) in revenue in the 2024-25 season, an increase of 36% from the previous year, according to consultancy firm Deloitte. Meanwhile, every single team in the Championship, the fifth-most attended league in Europe, made an operating loss in the same period for the second season in a row. Pro/Rel to MLS NOW!! /sarcasm
Uh... PL is judged by revenue there, Championship teams in operating loss, so that's already a clickbait comparison. I'm gonna go ahead and assume a good chunk of PL teams lost money as well.
Mark Attansio owns the Milwaukee Brewers and is the now-recent majority owner of Norwich City. He is one to track on the stomach for absorbing losses. Brewers only spending around 40% of revenue on payroll ... one of the lowest ratios in MLB.
The four professional divisions of England are unsustainable as is ... but have enough new investors currently to keep it going. I am part of the Supporters Trust for Exeter City, one of the two fan-owned teams in League One. Both are running unsustainable losses ... AFC Wimbledon is much worse than Exeter. Both fan bases are debating whether to sell some ownership to investors. And if that is a sugar high ... or a real fix to surviving.
Milwaukee Brewers have the best winning percentage in MLB, as of today, at .630. They have won more games and lost fewer games than any other team in MLB. They currently sit 7 1/2 games up in the NL Central (Maybe part of the reason for their great record.)
They also definitely will not win the world series and even if they do (they wont) they will be gutted for parts over the next few years regardless like every other MLB team outside of the top coastal cities
Like any small to medium size sport/entertainment market. As one of my coworkers told me a couple of months ago, "Elly de LaCruz is going to look really good in Dodger blue in a couple of years."
In a sign of the times, a YouTube content creator has been granted permission to live stream 20 Bundesliga games. His content is basically his live reactions to Manchester United games, although these streams will obviously include the live games. https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/articles/ckgd2gnm218o
Will it be legally available here? For example, there are highlights on Kicker. But I get a "not available in your area". And yes, I know about VPNs. The Bayern-Leipzig Bundesliga opener is on ESPN2, as the opener was last season, BTW.
i’m glad they’re being resurrected, I hope they don’t fall into anything lower than the current fifth tier that they’re at
Vitesse has been kicked out of the pro ranks in the Netherlands. https://www.reuters.com/sports/socc...sional-status-angering-supporters-2025-08-08/
The club, established in 1892, had been sanctioned last year and relegated to the Dutch second division because of financial irregularities, which the KNVB said included the absence of a bank account, the absence of a controlling accountant, and the fact that no conclusive budget could be provided. Yikes.
Kairat Almaty prevail on penalties at home over Celtic. The score was 0-0 after 180 minutes. In other words, Celtic once again fail to do anything in European competition as the away team. Benfica plays Fenerbahçe tomorrow. Club Brugge vs Rangers is another game tomorrow with big names. There's always a few fairly respected names in the playoffs into league phase (former group stage) and this year is no exception.
And United are out of the Carabao cup, losing 2-2 to Grimsby Town on PKs, 12-11. This just gets better and better.
