You are crazy optimistic. How many of those guys have been on the roster the last 2 years that hasn't made the playoffs?

Celio is a better fit with your description of the backup group (not ready, underperforming, inconsistent) than he is with the description of the other 2 starters. There is a reason Celio has failed to hold down a starting spot under every single coach we have had (BC, Hack, Olof, and Critch) and that reason is he doesn't have the quality to be an everyday starter even on a team that hasn't made the playoffs for 2 years running.

The midfield group is fine as long as we have Lowen. I sincerely hope and pray that Lowen's personal situation allows him to be available for the entire season, but I think it's foolish to not have a solid contingency plan in place. None of the others are ready to step in and produce at his levels.

Your solid back line had 1 clean sheet after Fall joined last summer (against mighty Montreal), and that was with a center back combo of Fall and Kessler. Forgive me for not sharing your enthusiasm for running it back with worse players.

The Louligans go in again. I really hope the FO realizes just how close they are to losing all the goodwill of the fanbase.

Some notes on the Klauss transfer:
    • The Los Angeles Galaxy paid CITY $2.375 million for Klauss. They only have him under contract for one year, and he's 29 years old. They have to make a big decision at the end of this season.
    • For any selling team, the time to sell a player is at the player's peak AND a year before the player's contract expires. Those factors likely drove CITY's decision to sell Klauss now.
    • At his best, Klauss was fantastic and CITY's most dangerous threat. At his worst, Klauss was inconsistent and both injury-prone and slump-prone.
    • CITY can convert all or part of the $2.375 million to GAM. That creates flexibility for CITY's reset.
    • Wray made an interesting comment. He said "some" of the sale price would be converted to GAM and that CITY will be active in the transfer windows (plural).
    • Wray's comment about the transfer windows (plural) suggests that CITY has its eyes on a player (or players) who may not be on the market now, but may be more open to coming with Klauss officially gone.
    • The schedules will be odd for the next year and a half because of the schedule realignment. There will be almost no time between this season and the weird "sprint season" and little time between that and the first half of the realigned 2027 season. The number of matches in this stretch favors teams with younger lineups, because of injury risks and tired legs. All of that has to be a factor in CITY's ongoing roster development. (Whether CITY's decisions pay off, are neutral, or prove costly remain to be seen.)
    • It's clear that CITY is taking a much longer view of the rebuild than this last old-schedule season. The wisdom of that choice is open for debate, but the fact of the choice seems clear now.

I really do appreciate your most positive reading of everything. My cynicism reads that comment as, "We weren't anticipating losing Klauss, so we don't have a plan B at the moment, so hopefully we can come up with that plan by the summer transfer window."

@fortcollins I could use some of your optimism following a draw with a USL team and only scoring from set pieces. How are we spinning this to make me feel better?

Interesting discussion of how he sees the game and his role as coach.

A few observations about Damet's interview.
    1. This season is about laying a foundation. Don't expect immediate success, but do expect progress and clarity.
    2. Younger players will love this guy as a coach. He is fluent in Gen Z.
    3. Defensive strategy is centered. Tactical builds will follow.
    4. Discipline, fitness, and teachability will be emphasized over individuality.
    5. He politely and diplomatically indicated that CITY needs a team culture that it currently lacks.
    6. Yoann >>> Olof. He is a significant upgrade.

Interesting, CITY took the Yoann Damet video private after posting it for hours. Then they apparently uploaded a new version of it. Was something edited out?

It doesn't matter who the coach is with the collection of players we have...nobody is winning with this crew. The crazy thing is we only have 1 senior roster spot remaining. Hopefully that gets filled with a DP.

I think that you have to put Edelman on the Morales line, and I would still consider that an upgrade. Santos has to be on the Padelford line, he is a direct replacement for him. I'm going to say that is an "=" at best, but probably a downgrade. Seeing as how JGR gave us the equivalent of nothing, Polvara has to be an upgrade.

The only problem with these things, we didn't upgrade on any starters. Replacing Watts/Morales, and JGR with upgrades raises our floor, but not our ceiling.

I'm gonna try on some positivity for a change. Looks like Teuchert scored today! If we are to have any chance, we are gonna need him to produce, so having him get back to health and on the scoresheet is only good!! (Wow that felt good, now back to your regularly scheduled programming)

Two more conference opponents upgraded their rosters today. Minnesota United signed James Rodriguez to a one-season deal and LAFC signed Stephen Eustaquio from FC Porto. Minnesota goes from blown up and in ruins to weak with a star. LAFC added to its midfield threats.

Honest question for everyone in the group...

Who is the last player we signed who you legitimately knew of before we signed them? Who did you not have to Google to see how good they were? Kessler?

For me, the answer is Burki. He is legitmately the only player we have ever signed that I knew of. I am not saying that is the only way to get good players, obviously, but it is hard to get fans excited for all the new signings.

Asked another way, who of any of the signings would you put their name on your jersey, no questions asked?

Many of the players signed from other teams. I knew Anthony Markanich from his time in Colorado. I saw Tim Parker, Jonathan Bell, John Nelson, Chris Durkin, Alfredo Morales, Henry Kessler, and Xande Silva in several matches. And I was certainly aware of Simon Becher from when he was at SLU. The internatioal players, not so much so.

House of Cards, I agree with you. I do not have the grasp of players as Fort Collins does. Burki is the only person who comes to mind for me . . . At this point in time, I do not believe ownership is committed to winning trophies. For them this is a business. Keep your labor costs low. Hire young or under value. Use a lot of buzz words and act like you know what you are doing . . . . and hope that somehow you get another miracle type of year as we saw in year one . . .

To be clear, just because I knew these players' abilities doesn't mean I think we should have acquired some of them. I saw Markanich many times with Colorado, and I thought he would prove to be a good player. CITY misused him and didn't play him to his potential. Minnesota unlocked that potential by adjusting tactics to his strength. Bell, Durkin, Parker, and Kessler impressed me as OK players. Durkin has been a huge disappointment, but some of that is injuries and some of that is tactics. Let's see if a change in coaching can make him what he was at DCU. I thought Nelson was a steady player, and he's proved to be that since he left. I never understood what CITY saw in Silva or Morales (other than his speed). Parker was near the end of his career, and Kessler was injured far too much to see what he could do regularly, though his game stats were excellent.

As I was asking, even knowing them, which one of those players would you put on the back of your jersey without having seen them play for CITY? By contrast, Minnesota is already selling boatloads of James jerseys. If we were to get someone like Sargent tomorrow, you would sell 10,000 jerseys with his name before the first game.

TBH, I've never bought a player-name jersey in any sport. They're expensive, and it just hasn't been something I've done. Now band tees, that's different. ;)

Does this take our last senior roster spot or is he going on the supplemental roster? If he’s supplemental, whatever I don’t care, if we don’t have a roster spot to sign Klauss’ replacement, I’m so done!
