I have a lot of issues with our club, but holy f***, at least we aren't San Jose... Landon says someone in the San Jose front office forgot to "trigger the option to trigger the option" in Cristian Espinoza's contract, leading him to sign with Nashville. pic.twitter.com/DM7ZMRdVh3— UnfilteredSoccer (@UnfilteredSoccr) January 13, 2026
Matthew Doyle has an interesting team-by-team analysis of the Western Conference offseason moves and current rosters. Here is his conclusion: What comes next: Both Bürki and Klauss can be bought down to TAM, which is significant for obvious reasons. And Girdwood-Reich is on loan with Auckland City; it’s not yet clear whether or not that opens up a U22 slot (my guess is Wray will figure something out). But it’s just… there’s not a lot of maneuvering to do here. The real trick for Wray and new head coach Yoann Damet will be to get St. Louis – who are sitting atop a gold mine of local talent – to start approaching player development the way the Sounders or Philadelphia Union do. If (when?) they manage that, this team has as high a floor as anybody in the league.
All reports are that Burki can't be bought down and JGR will count as a U22. This includes multiple of the STL reporters claiming Doyle is wrong today.
Many of the pods seem to think that Edelman goes straight into the starting XI. Here is Damet putting Durkin into the leadership group. Could Durkin be slotting into the CB position? After @stlCITYsc training on Thursday, Yoann Damet said Roman Bürki, Marcel Hartel, Edu Löwen & Chris Durkin would be the player leadership group."We might add more later... those 4 guys I'm going to rely on & their experiences... Roman will be captain." #AllForCITY pic.twitter.com/06Wmv5hi7a— Matt Baker (@MattBakerSTL) January 15, 2026
Doyle bats about .500 most days. He was wrong about Klauss, since he was already bought down last season. He's halfway wrong about Burki, since he can't be bought down this season but can be bought down in 2027. He's halfway right about the young talent, too.
“It is the dawn of a new era. I think you’re seeing everything continue to rise and that’s exactly what this region needs.” Hear from #AllForCITY owner and CEO Carolyn Kindle as we kick off 2026 in this episode of The CITY Voice 🎙️ https://t.co/UusrxaDLAl pic.twitter.com/wI0PTSDBUE— St Louis CITY SC (@stlCITYsc) January 16, 2026 For her first statement since last year at this time telling us how we were going to make the playoffs, this is pretty weak.
Matt Baker reports that Josh Sargent has been demoted to the Norwich reserves, and either will never play for Norwich again or something or other. Tom Bogert is reporting that Sargent "ONLY wants Toronto" (his emphasis on "only"). Bogert's wording suggests that money isn't the reason he isn't looking at St. Louis or other teams. Bogert also reports that Sargent has a "relegation release clause" in his contract, and notes that Norwich is currently in the relegation zone.
CITY needs to trade Jake Girdwood-Reich, figure out if Henry Kessler can stay fit, solve the Cedric Teuchert situation, figure out where/if/how Chris Durkin fits in, get an answer on the "continuing discussions" with Minnesota about Devin Padelford (my hunch is it's a "no"), and assess the SuperDraft players. And do all that in now-time.
Our only hope is that wherever JGR is in New Zealand wants to buy him permanently, or else we are stuck with him occupying a spot and never playing. I would love to sign up King Kess, but if we do, it really makes the Yaro signing even worse (if that was possible). We still need to get a LB, and if not Padelford gotta find someone else. It feels like Wallem is wasted there a bit. Durkin is going to be an important piece, whether in the middle or the back. Cedi is another one we are saddled with. If we are relying on SuperDraft players for anything, we are full on wooden spoon contenders. We need more in attack!!
Miami needs GAM. We have GAM. Miami has Benjamin Cremaschi on loan to Italy through June, where he's buried deep on the bench. Do we want Cremaschi?
Setting off the smoke for Wallem feels a little bait and switch. I am really glad we signed him!! But we had him last year and didn’t make the playoffs, so it still doesn’t move the needle. At this point in time, I maintain our roster is worse than what we finished last season with, and I’m counting the unannounced Fall in that calculation.
Damet is changing CITY's tactics. He won't use Wallem the way Critchley did. CITY hired Wray, promising more of the same old same old. It looks like Wray educated them, and Damet was hired to make the changes. If so, this is a different team. Better? Maybe. If Wray pulls this off, he's a contender for team exec of the year. If he doesn't, we're in the rut again.
One of those spots goes to Mbacke. I like the signing, high ceiling signing, but feels like one more future minded signing. Kessler is more a right now signing. So I feel like this year, Kessler > Mbacke. Long term Kessler < Mbacke. I can live with that. I know it's gonna be a process, I just want to make the playoffs, and we aren't set up for that this year.
MLS announces offseason GAM count for all 30 clubsGAM is a valuable tool for MLS roster building. Can acquire players/assets, but most used to buy down non-DP salary cap hits to fit under roster rules pic.twitter.com/Jt1qx20e8U— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 21, 2026 "As of January 20," so does that mean the 700k for Edelman is already accounted for?
Welp, here is Baker's tweet. He notes that we have the 4th most after Edelman, but it's actually 5th. Houston, Minnesota, Miami and RSL have more than us. MLS has published updated GAM available as of 1/20/26. After the Edelman trade, @stlCITYsc has $6,150,522 available. This number is not reflective of the amount of GAM that teams will be applying to be roster compliant in 2026.This is good for the 4th most in MLS. #AllForCITY pic.twitter.com/fylChatJpJ— Matt Baker (@MattBakerSTL) January 21, 2026
🟡🚨 BREAKING: LA Galaxy in talks to acquire St. Louis City DP forward Joao Klauss, per sources.Deal would be a cash trade around $2m.Not done yet, still details to sort + green light from player needed, but talks ongoing.https://t.co/EyOuAJTxlj— Tom Bogert (@tombogert) January 21, 2026 this is ok if we bring in a DP 9
As reported in the BBC: Norwich City striker Josh Sargent has played his last game for the club following a heated meeting with sporting director Ben Knapper and head coach Philippe Clement. The 25-year-old USA international wants a return to North America to join Toronto FC. (Tom Bogert)
The MLS just announced the transfer windows and transfer rules changes. The Primary Transfer Window is January 26 to March 26. The Roster Compliance date is February 9. The Secondary Transfer Window is July 13 to September 2. The Roster Freeze date is October 9. The Canadian MLS teams will follow the US transfer window schedule. The other rule changes are huge. They will open PlayerMart for business. Buckle the seatbelts, the MLS is gonna floor it. MLS also announced amendments to the 2026 Roster Rules and Regulations that are now in effect for clubs: Elimination of limitations on the number of Cash for Player Trades a club can make each season. Elimination of age restrictions and limitations on the number of Intraleague Loans a club can make each season. Removed the deadline for a player to be considered a domestic player for a season instead of an international player. Clubs may agree that an International Roster Slot traded within or prior to the Primary Transfer Window will return to the original club on a specific date within the Secondary Transfer Window. These agreements must be definitive. Designated Players acquired via Cash for Player Trades in the Secondary Transfer Window may be added at the mid-season Designated Player Salary Budget Charge. Players who have appeared on a gameday roster are eligible to be placed in Supplemental Slot 31 as long as they meet the other Slot 31 requirements.
One additional comment on the new rules. I'm really glad CITY hired Corey Wray. I don't think Lutz would have seen the opportunity in these new rules. Wray absolutely will.
