the phrase 'beggars can't be choosers' comes to mind given our situation ... but man, it feels like we'd be upgrading a -9 owner to a -8 owner.

In his first start for Millwall, Barry Bannan got man-of-the-match and a rating of 8.28/10 from BBC sport in the Lions' 2-0 away win v Wrexham yesterday.

    **sigh**

It's all but certain that Sheffield United will mathematically relegate Wednesday should they win the derby at the Sty on Sunday. Wednesday's only hope of preventing that (winning aside*) will be if Blackburn, West Brom, and Pompey** all get results on Saturday, which would see Wednesday down before a ball is kicked on Sunday.

Won't be a fun day for the travelling Wednesday fans, regardless; but United slamming the door (and singing about it) will make it that much worse.

    *won't happen.
**Pompey also play on the Tuesday prior, so a result in either would do.

West Brom's inability to beat Coventry today means that Wednesday have yet to be mathematically relegated. A loss or draw tomorrow - to Sheffield United - will officially send them down. Which will just make this particular Steel City Derby tonking all the more painful.

It's virtually impossible to see them getting anything from it, let alone a win. There's always hope, of course ... but I'm guessing tomorrow won't be much fun for the Owls that make the trip to the Lane.

Really tough (impossible, actually) to make out what's going on, or rather why they've backed out. Speculation can run three or four ways, none of which are really worth banging on about. It's now known that their bid was just short of 50m quid, which by all accounts was ridiculously high, as no estimate I've seen (and they vary) suggests the club and it's assets in total are worth more than 30m.

The most likely scenario as of now appears that one of the (significantly) 'lesser' bidders (no one else came close) will get the nod, but who's bid will not be sufficient to satisfy the 25% to the club's creditors (Chansiri being one), meaning the club would likely be going into next season with a 15-point deduction. However, that very prospect means they'd be all but certain of spending a minimum of two years in League1, and worse, in conjunction with the needs of the squad (which will have to be built from near scratch), a points deduction makes dropping to League2 a very real possibility.

At that point, addressing the long term needs of Hillsborough Stadium become all the more daunting, and you begin to wonder if (for the investor) it's worth doing at all.

I'm pretty sure the regulators said there were a handful who had offered proof of funds early in the process, so you've got to think there will be offers to come. But it won't be long now before whomever gets it will be up against time in terms of preparing for next season in League1. So going back to square one is a burden on more than just folks' patience.

At this point, I think most would welcome the 'dreaded' Mike Ashley rolling up to pick it all up for a song. At least he would provide stability. The grossly optimistic hopes (that some had) that there were big investors waiting to take Wednesday straight back up to 'where they belong' are long gone. Keeping the club alive and at Hillsborough seem more pressing concerns.

John Percy of The Telegraph is reporting that Mike Ashley is due to put in a revised bid for Wednesday within the next 24 hours.

The Times on Saturday are suggesting that Ashley has tabled a bid of around 18m quid for the club.

Some are suggesting that the dreaded points deduction due to insufficient percentage of repayment to creditors is something that might be negotiated down (or away?) during the confirmation process.

No idea if there's anything to that, but I'd be surprised if they get off the hook any easier than what's feared. Still, whatever gets a stable owner in the door and a plan in place is OK by most, I'd think, points deduction or no.

Arise Capital Partners, the David Storch-led consortium, has been named the preferred bidder by the administrators. Their bid hasn't met the 25p-on-the-pound limit for creditors, so it looks as though a 15-point deduction for next season is incoming. The big question is whether the transfer embargo continues. If so, League2 looms very large.

But at least that major corner has been turned.

90th minute equalizer for Watford. Charles parried a long range shot that he definitely should have caught. The rebound rattled around the box and ended up in the net. Really tough result for a game Wednesday absolutely should have won.

By most accounts the form is beginning to improve, even if the results aren't showing it.
