Doing very well now at Southampton FC past few games, he has improved the defensive aspects. Made a few key recoveries with the ball.
Southampton are 7th, they can push for a promotion play-off! It'll be too late for Matsuki to make the WC but he can get into a Japan squad afterwards providing he keeps going in good form. I don't know what will happen to Sugawara for next season
🏴💫 Kuryu Matsuki (22) scored his first Championship goal on Tuesday and now he’s got his first assist.• 81 Mins• 1 Assist • 79% Pass Accuracy • 100% Dribble Success• 3 Defensive Actions • 3 Recoveries • 7/11 Duels Won• 3 Fouls Drawn Matsuki redemption arc in… pic.twitter.com/MikT3kcfRH— Japanese Football (@JapaneseFbl) February 28, 2026 Got an assist and played for 81 minutes. At this rate, played as a wing-back too if not wrong. Have to say he is quite versatile.
🏴💫 Kuryu Matsuki (22) vs Coventry City:• 1 GOAL• 83% Pass Acc• 1 Chance Created • 4 Tackles • 3 Clearances• 3 Recoveries • 8/14 Duels WonThree goals and one assist in his last four starts 🤩 pic.twitter.com/dM7Uir3P2c— Japanese Football (@JapaneseFbl) March 14, 2026 Not just the goal, but an all-around decent performance by him. Very active in pressing, making tackles, clearances and recoveries, etc.
Matsuki is a fighter and a strong willed individual. He captained Aomori Yamada in the All Japan High school football tournament and even lead older teammates. He then played for FC Tokyo and became their captain. And then fought for his place at Goztepe. So I think one day Matsuki will fight his way into the Japan set up and he's got the talent for it. But he can't play on the wing, he needs to play more centrally.
