Don't expect a big crowd for Birmingham; they're playing in Montevallo (almost 40 miles away from the city center) and rain is in the forecast...I guess they're hoping for a decent college kid turnout since admission is going to be free for U of Montevallo staff and students.
Late controversy as the Hartford coach is yellow carded and his assistant is red carded. Extra time about to start. I think most of the "crowd" has left.
This is fantastic. Marcus Epps pulled down. Hartford coach runs on the pitch calling for a red. Grabs the effects mic and says "that's a red any day of the week". But the NYC player only gets a yellow. Instead Epps gets a red presumably for retaliation. Game restarts. Foul by Athletic. Straight red for both teams. Hartford down to 9 men, NYC 10. Security runs to the side of the ref. Ref plays on. Hartford coach calls for 6 more minutes. Ref responds by blowing for full-time. Chaos ensues. Possible red for the coach. It's all over. NYC II wins. That was a 123 minute anti-ref tirade by the coach. I'm surprised he lasted that long.
I loved the mic bit - he even stated "I know this is a live mic" before saying the bit about the red card. The announcers were silent for quite a while after that.
Fun starts here for anyone who wants to relive it. https://www.youtube.com/live/1-067YT3Vz0?si=kjDOlSeQklKHx4b8&t=2h44m55s I don't think either retaliation was worth a red.
The El Paso goalie just made a painful save off a point blank shot - let's just say he didn't use his hands or feet to make the save, but rather his "mid-section".

The draw for the Round of 32 is today at 1 pm EDT. It is going to be interesting. The rules say 8 groups of 4 created geographically but also that there has to be an MLS team in each group. There are 7 MLS teams west of the Mississippi and only 12 (if you stretch just a tiny bit for Memphis) lower division teams. So there are going to be some very un-geographic groups. These groups are only used for this round and they start over for the Round of 16 so these groups won't last beyond this gameday.
NISA is out, NP has 1 team left, and USL1 has 3 remaining. We had plenty of upsets so far, we've still got 4 teams at the D3 level, and it remains to be seen how seriously the 8 MLS teams take it this year.
