To blame that on Sonnet is wrong. Ball went high to an Aussie who towered over Nighswonger to head the ball into the middle, Sonnet was stepping over to help. It's Girma on the right who was not guarding anyone. Kennedy did well to slip in between Sonnet n Girma to score.
Sonnet did make the mistake letting Kennedy cutting in front of her to try for the header but calling her lost is an overstatement.
I admit, I'm a little tough on Sonnet, but there are many years of history behind that bias. I'm always concerned when she's defending near her own goal. I think she's much better suited as a defensive mid.
For goodness sake. There was a two hour delay in Morocco vs Argentina men IN THIS TOURNAMENT before teams returned to the field and the tying goal was disallowed.
Someone mentioned that the delay in that match was due to a pitch invasion, not VAR. Anyways, I hope y'all don't take my posts too seriously. I'm more emotional during matches and I was on a 3-match watching spree with 3 hours sleep.
What Gustavsson said after the game about his yellow card: "I did apologize to the referee if he misinterpreted me because what I said when I got the yellow card was that the VAR is calling for you. You need to listen because they came and told me that the system was down and the guy next to me said, ‘We’re trying to get ahold of the referee but he doesn’t hear.’ And then I said, ‘You need to listen to VAR to try to get ahold of you’ and I got a yellow card but I think I got more yellow card from my body language than what I said to be honest and I apologize for that at halftime if he interpreted me being angry. I don’t know why he restarted the play. The only thing I know is I was informed that it was a technical issue.” Also more explanation on what was happening with VAR from MassRef when I asked in the refereeing forum: "It was clear Letexier had no direct communication with the VAR. He told the coaches that. He then went to someone near the fourth who was support staff and indicated it was a goal because VAR was down and there was no way to communicate (so you default to decision on the field). While he was explaining all that to the Australian captain, it seems a mobile connection was established so, given play hadn't restarted, he went back to that support staff and then to the monitor. The idea of having a mobile phone backup is actually standard protocol in MLS and, I presume, most domestic competitions. Interested to learn if it's a required fail-safe with FIFA, too, or if this was an ad hoc fix. The fact that Letexier (initially) so quickly said 'can't talk to VAR, goal stands' was kind of surprising to me."
Good question. Could have simply been his plan to just manage them for the build up to the Olympics? >shrugs< Did he specify something in his resignation?
So then, it could be a courtesy resignation to make it easier for them to pick somebody else if they regard this as a failure, or he could actually want to do something different...
Only 17 in the squad: Confirmed that not only is Sam Coffey suspended for Saturday’s #USWNT Olympic quarterfinal against Japan but US can only dress 17. Alternates cannot be called up due to disciplinary absences— Dan Lauletta (@TheDanLauletta) August 1, 2024
filtering through various Australian sites, there were some stories that they were going to hire former SD Wave coach after the Olympics, but others say is resignation was rushed. "Due to disciplinary absences." It sounds odd. Makes it seem like some people weren't showing up to practices or staying out late?
No. She accumulated two yellow cards (which are disciplinary actions) during the group stage and, because of that, is disqualified from playing in the next (quarterfinal) game. Apparently, the rules do not allow a player to be added to the game roster if a player is DQ'd from a game due to accumulated yellows. Give the too small roster size in the first place, that seems like a very harsh rule.
The inter-team discipline has nothing to do with the alternates their behaving badly or even being violent toward teammates or others away from the field or official Olympic activities. But if they are suspend because of official Olympic sanctions or FIFA sanctions they cannot be replaced by alternates. I looked but could find no mention as to what would happen if there was so many "card" suspensions that the team cannot field 11 to start a match In this case "disciplinary" to me is quite clear but I looked around a bit anyway and found that a player missing a match for "cards" or other official sanctions from FIFA or the Olympic committee or about anything that is not injury cannot be replaced by an alternate if she would otherwise be eligible to play. That is, in this case, a suspension for "card accumulation" or a "red card" cannot be replaced by an alternate. I think that is clear but, like every other regulation written by lawyers, the exact wording seems intended to obscure the meaning so the lawyers can make it mean most anything as their whims dictate. In this case no alternate can replace Coffey.. That is, for the quarters the USA has only 17 players of which 2 must be goalkeepers. To put it even more simply the USA cannot use all their subs as (unless they sub the 'keeper) 5 are allowed and only 4 are available. This actually could be a problem as all legs in the tournament are tiring more rapidly as the amount of rest is insufficient for decent recovery. I believe that the lack of a sub will not matter in the result but the lack of Coffey herself could mater and could matter a great deal.
No, she got a second yellow card in the group stage-- the tournament is disciplining her too many serious fouls. A red card would do the same.
However, even if they could use an alternate for Coffey, they have already brought in their alternate defender (Sams) their alternate mid (Bethune) and their alternate forward (Williams.) So the only one left is their alternate keeper isn't it?
