It's not that important, but is this true? They don't just let in Japanese sprinters for 2021 because they're at home, do they?
Yes, the host gets into the tourney. And yes, the host generally gets someone into every event. They just often lose in the early rounds.
It’s true for all the team sports. Not sure how it works for individual events, but countries big enough to host an olympics have guaranteed spots in most of those anyway.
Well, I know for individual events you have to meet the "Olympic Standard." I'm not sure how hard that is, but it isn't easy. Host is in for all team events, then? We'd probably make the Olympic Standard for Soccer, but it'll be close...
Damn the Olympic Standards are pretty high... Who's running a 10.05 100M? https://www.flotrack.org/articles/6394026-2020-olympic-qualifying-standards-released
let's remember some guys pic.twitter.com/b4zXhVDRfk— Seth Vertelney (@svertelney) July 2, 2022 How about this #USMNT lineup the last time they played an Olympic game? pic.twitter.com/zQVqOxlYvL— Paul Carr (@PaulCarr) July 2, 2022
Nice primer on the qualifying for the tournament. 16 team tournament and only 18 players on the roster. Yikes. https://www.google.com/amp/s/olympi...paris-football-qualification-system-explained
Why do Africa and Asia get 3.5 slots while Europe only gets three and N and S America only get two. And Oceania gets one whole slot?
The distribution seems to take population into account more so than footballing pedigree. Consider also, however, that with France automatically qualifying as the host Europe is assured of 4 teams in the tournament.
Could be. Does that happen in every sport? Also if they go by population isn't Asia a lot more populated than Africa and they both get the same number of spots? Soccer qualifying for U23 Olympics is a weird beast so - shrug.
Please use this thread for discussion of the Olympic football tournament. Please use this thread for discussion of our U-23 player pool in the run-up to the Games. Thanks all!
Hmm, not sure about those CBs or the DM... A #USMNT U-23 Squad with no Overage players Looks pretty good on Paper tbh 🧐 pic.twitter.com/J1fuvOUY4W— Edgar Moreno 🇺🇸🇲🇽 (@ConcacafEdgar) July 25, 2022
How dare you. We are nothing without Johnny. He contributed immensely to the last Olympic team and will be a difference maker for the next.
As a younger man I would've written a half dozen 2024 roster mockup posts on my blog, The Soccer Blog, by now. How far I've fallen.
TBF, that team was super young team compared to it’s comp, with little prep. Not indicative of what was going on. Johnny in two years could, and should be a much better player, that flew in a few days before the first match if I recall, then what he was then. There is a reason he is still eligible. Of course someone else could easily take his spot. It’s a long time away.
