This bodes well for my fantasy of #Bocanegra4MLSCommish. As a former player and student of the beautiful game, not to mention successful executive, Carlos would be an insightful and inspiring leader of the MLS corporation for years to come. #GarberOut https://t.co/5kPwrRyyQb— Chris LaMacchia (@chrislamacchia) September 4, 2024 Bocanegra is leaving Atlanta. I get what you are saying Chris, but Atlanta fans are very happy to see him go. He also hasn't been very friendly to USSF.
The MLS Comminssioner's job is unlike any other. You're essentially the CEO of a multi billion dollar corporation with a really aggressive Board of Directors. There is literally nothing in Bocanegras background which qualifies him for that role.
Interesting thought experiment but what is the profile of Dong's replacement? Where is this person coming from? Another NFL exec up and comer or do they go with more of a "soccer guy"? I think you throw as much money at Bez as you can to try to lure him back to the states.
Bez wouldn't get an interview, he doesn't have the background and he would be lobbying the owners to spend more by overhauling the roster and budget restrictions. Plus he enjoys the work of being a GM which is why he uprooted his family to move to Europe. We've seen his instincts for the business side aren't as developed or savvy as his GM roster management, which is why the Haslams have progressively brought in more members of their management team to run things. The primary candidates would be league office executives from the four major sports and corporate underlings of Don's at MLS HQ. Beyond that, there would be the remote possibility of interviewing business managers of holding companies that have a portfolio of teams. They would need to be related to companies of vetted MLS owners so they are aware of MLS' single-entity structure. An example might be Josh Glessing of Haslam Sports Group (that sound you just heard was LaMacchia throwing a folding chair at me). He oversees managerial and strategic elements of the Browns and the Crew, collaborates on running the Milwaukee Bucks, has deep ties into Tennessee Volunteers football, and advises the Haslams on new opportunities to expand the portfolio. He's an asshole - a feature of the necessary profile to be a commissioner - and he understands the business of sports.
I actually really like Glessing, even though we have some professional disagreements. And you're exactly right that he's the profile the BoG will be looking for when the time comes to replace Garber.
I could see Bez later in his career taking this type of role but it’s definitely not happening anytime soon.He is definitely enjoying his GM career at the moment.

One of the surviving, very splendid BS traditions is the Magic Number/Tragic Number table which is still maintained. Someone else will have to explain how a team gets the dreaded "toast" designation, although the "burnt toast" moniker is more or less self explanatory. For numbers geeks this is prize stuff: https://www.bigsoccer.com/threads/the-2024-table-magic-numbers-tragic-numbers-toast.2132233/ It's pretty late in the season to have no team in the east designated as toast, but I can say with assurance that the bottom of the west is pure garbage.
Free agency list for after the season is out: https://mlsplayers.org/news/2025-free-agent-list Interestingly, only two Crew players are on it: Bush (out of contract) and Ramirez (pending option). Matan isn’t there. Maybe they already picked up his option but just didn’t announce it? Strange. I see one player I’d really be interested in that is out of contract: LAFC CB Jesús Murillo. Dude is just a monster. Another guy I’d look at but would really need to think about is Albert Rusnak from Seattle. There are some dudes that could be depth guys, but no one to get really excited about. Most of the better players still have options so probably won’t actually hit free agency.
Because Tiny Vampire is basically stuck with Columbus if he wants to play in MLS. He has not played enough seasons to hit “free agency “ he can go on a free outside of mls
Teams become toast before they are mathematically eliminated, at which point they are burnt toast. I think it's when they need to average 2 points a game to get to the last playoff spot. Occasionally a team is able to do that and become untoasted, ie lazarakia.
Murillo has been nothing but a shithouser against us. Do we really want someone who collects cards like he does?
So? Games outside Crew games matter too, whether you watch them or not. He’s one of the very best CBs in the league.
Hard to be on the field if you're getting suspensions for accumulation and straight reds isn't it? 5 yellows and 1 red in 22 appearances this year.
How many of those 22 appearances have you watched? How about last year? If you’re gonna sit here and tell me he’s not good, then we live in two different realities.
It's more complicated than that. I tried using that as my ghetto formula for TOAST a couple years ago because the guy who normally does it wasn't doing his thread, and I found out that my formula wasn't as scientific as his. But that's the ballpark of it. It's when a team is so far behind that they would have to drastically exceed expectations to get in.
