An RBI single to right field by Franmil Reyes scored Chusei Mannami from second base for the game winning run as the Nippon-Ham Fighters came from a 6-1 deficit after 3 innings to achieve an 8-7 win over the SoftBank Hawks at Mizuho PayPay Dome in Fukuoka. Kotaro Kiyomiya led the comeback with four RBIs including a three run home run in the 5th inning to draw the game level at 6-6. Mannami also played a significant role going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored including his 14th homer of the year, a two-run blast in the 4th that had cut into SoftBank's five run lead. Hotaka Yamakawa slugged his 19th homer of the season for the Hawks. Masato Morishita went 8 innings allowing one run and batted home the game winning run to lead the Hiroshima Carp to a 4-1 win over the Chunichi Dragons. Morishita fanned eight batters over his 8 frames of work, But once again it was what he did with the bat that proved the difference. The right-handed hurler, who turns 28 later this month, sent a two-RBI single through the infield into centerfield that put the Carp up 3-1 in the 5th inning. Morishita, who has two modashos (threes hit in a game) on his resumé so far this season, was slotted eighth in the batting lineup and is now hitting .303 in 33 at-bats this campaign.
The SoftBank Hawks scored twice in the bottom of the 9th inning to come away with a 3-2 sayonara win against the Nippon-Ham Fighters on Sunday. Trailing 2-1 with bases loaded and no outs, the Hawks tied the game when Tomoya Masaki's sacrifice fly to right field allowed Ryoya Kurihara to tag from third base and beat Chusei Mannami's errant throw to home plate. Tatsuru Yanagimachi then singled up the middle past a drawn in infield to score pinch runner Isami Nomura for the walk off win. Tomohisa Ohzeki didn't pick up the win despite a stellar 8 inning performance on the mound where he allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven. The big blemish was Yūki Nomura's two-run home run in the 7th that had given the Fighters a 2-1 lead. Tomoyuki Sugano went 7 quality innings allowing just one run to earn his 10th win of the season helping the Yomiuri Giants to a 4-1 win over the Yakult Swallows. Sugano's battery mate Takumi Ohshiro went 2-for-4 including a two-RBI double in the 1st inning that ended up being the game winner. The Kyojin scored two insurance runs in the 8th to secure the victory and give the Giants the weekend series 2-1 over their crosstown city rivals.

Tuesday 6 August Boxscores: https://baseball.yahoo.co.jp/npb/schedule/?date=2024-08-06 Eagles-Fighters went 10 innings
Munetaka Murakami singled to centerfield scoring Shu Masuda from second base to give the Yakult Swallows a 5-4 sayonara victory against the Hanshin Tigers at Meiji Jingu. It was Murakami's first walk-off hit since his two-run double gave Japan a legendary win over Mexico in last year's WBC semi-finals. It's his first NPB sayonara since May 24, 2022. Tetsuto Yamada, who was also a member of that Samurai Japan team, also homered for Yakult, a three-run blast that had flipped a 3-1 Swallows deficit into a 4-3 lead. It was Yamada's ninth homer of the year. Teruaki Sato was Hanshin's key player on the night, going 3-for-4 including a mammoth home run that landed high in the bleachers just inside the right field pole. It marked the 11th consecutive game that Sato has scored in, which ties a Tigers club record. Makoto Aduwa pitched the first complete game shutout of his four-year career to lead the Hiroshima Carp to a 5-0 blanking of the Yomiuri Giants. The Carp southpaw allowed just three hits and three walks in a 133 pitch performance. Chusei Mannami connected for a grand slam in the 10th inning to give the visiting Nippon-Ham Fighters a 5-1 win over the Rakuten Golden Eagles in Sendai. Second year pitcher Shoma Kanemura went 9 innings but did not figure in the decision after conceding a run in the bottom of the 9th which tied the score at 1-1. Kotaro Kiyomiya went 3-for-4 including two doubles with an RBI and run scored for the Fighters.

Wednesday 7 August Boxscores: https://baseball.yahoo.co.jp/npb/schedule/?date=2024-08-07 Swallows-Tigers was called with no outs and two runners on base in the bottom of the 5th inning (lightning/rain) Giants-Carp finished tied after 12 innings Dragons-BayStars finished tied after 12 innings
Yuma Mune hit a solo home run in the 7th inning to break a 2-2 tie and it held up as the game-winning hit as the Orix Buffaloes defeated the Seibu Lions 3-2 in Osaka. Tomoya Mori had tied the game in the 6th with a two-run blast off Lions starter Chihiro Sumida. Seibu third baseman Takayoshi Yamamura had given the visitors the lead with a two-RBI double in the 4th inning. Munetaka Murakami homered as the Yakult Swallows defeated the Hanshin Tigers 4-0 in a game that was called in the bottom of the 5th inning when lightning struck close to Meiji Jingu Stadium. Murakami's two-run round-tripper was his 21st of the season which leads all of NPB. it was also his 212st homer of his NPB career which equals the home run total that legendary player Sadaharu Oh achieved in his first seven seasons. Kazuhiro Kiyohara holds the record for Japanese players with 222 home runs in his first seven seasons (1985-1991). Tigers third baseman Teruaki Sato committed two errors in the 2nd inning that led to two more Yakult runs, and the home team threatened to add to the total when Hideki Nagaoka and Domingo Santana reached base to open the bottom of the 5th when lightning had everyone running for cover before the heavens opened forcing the umpires to call the contest. In the 3-3 tie between the Yomiuri Giants and Hiroshima Carp, Kyojin infielder Hayato Sakamoto hit his 189th modasho (three hits in a game) putting him five away from second all time in NPB (Tetsuharu Kawakami, 194). Sakamoto nearly had a fourth hit in the 7th inning but his deep fly sailed just foul of the left field pole, then his liner was brilliantly caught by a diving Kaito Kozono who was then ruled to have doubled Elier Hernández off third base.
The SoftBank Hawks scored three runs on nine hits and a walk off Lotte Marines ace Roki Sasaki en route to a 6-3 victory at Zozo Marines Stadium in Chiba. After leading off the game with a single to right field, SoftBank's second baseman Taisei Makihara got to Sasaki again in the 2nd inning with a two-run double to center to open the scoring. The Hawks added to their lead in the 3rd when a two-out single by Tatsuru Yanagimachi - the third consecutive hit in the inning by the Hawks - brought home Kensuke Kondoh to make the score 3-0. Sasaki departed the game after going 5 innings, throwing 90 pitches and recording nine strikeouts. The visitors added three solo home runs, including Hotaka Yamakawa's 20th of the year, in the latter innings to complete the scoring. The win over the second place Marines gives the Hawks (yes, we've reached that point of the season) a magic number of 34 to claim the Pacific League pennant. Shosei Togo pitched his third complete game of the year - his second CGSO - to lead the Yomiuri Giants to a 5-0 win over the Hiroshima Carp. Togo allowed five hits and a walk while striking out five batters to earn his eighth win of the season. The Giants ace hurler was made to wait until the 7th inning before the win was secured thanks to Coco Montes' double to centerfield that scored Takumi Ohshiro with the game winning run. It was the first of the five runs Yomiuri scored in the inning having sent 10 batters to the plate during the frame.
Seiya Hosokawa and Takuya Kinoshita each homered in a five run 1st inning as the Chunichi Dragons handily defeated the Yomiuri Giants 9-2 in Nagoya. The victim was southpaw rookie Teppei Mataki who was making his third career appearance, allowing four hits and two walks to the eight batters he faced on the night. Hosokawa's 15th round-tripper of the year was a three-run blast while Kinoshita's two-run shot completed the barrage and the Dragons never looked back. Shinnosuke Ogasawara earned his fifth win by tossing 134 pitches over 8 innings. Yutaro Ishida allowed two earned runs on just four hits over 7 innings in the Yokohama DeNA BayStars 5-2 win over the Yakult Swallows. Trailing 2-0 in the 2nd, the BayStars drew level on Kouki Kajiwara's two-run homer. Yuudai Yamamoto hit a solo homer run in the 6th to put Yokohama in front, and two insurance runs followed in the 7th to complete the win. No games in the Pacific League were scheduled for Friday.

The big bats of the Rakuten Eagles outslugged those of the SoftBank Hawks to come away with 13-6 victory at Fukuoka's Mizuho PayPay Dome. Two of Rakuten's homers were hit off July's Pacific League pitcher of the month Kohei Arihara who was chased after just 3 innings after allowing six earned runs. Daichi Suzuki and the first homer of the season for Hiroto Kobukata had the Eagles up 5-0 after 2 innings. Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the 5th, the Hawks nearly completed a comeback by batting around the order to score six runs which included Hotaka Yamakawa's 21st bomb of the year. But the Eagles added insurance runs in the final two innings with Itsuki Murabayashi and Hikaru Ohta going back-to-back in the final frame to secure the win. The Nippon-Ham Fighters scored three runs in the 7th inning and two more in the 8th for a 5-1 win over the Seibu Lions at Es Con Field Hokkaido. Shuta Tonosaki put Seibu up with a solo home run in the 2nd, and starting pitcher Tatsuya Imai had a one-hit shutout after 6 innings when it all unraveled in the 7th. A single, an error, two walks and a hit-batsman chased Imai with two outs and led to the Fighters scoring three unearned runs to take the lead. Yuya Gunji and Kotaro Kiyomiya hit consecutive homers in the 8th to secure the Fighters their fourth win in a row. Masato Morishita tossed his second complete game of the season to lead the Hiroshima Carp to a 5-1 over the Hanshin Tigers at the Kyocera Dome in Osaka. Morishita allowed the one run off just five hits for his ninth win of the year with the Tigers achieving just one hit after the 2nd inning. Shota Dobayashi led the Hiroshima attack with a modasho 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
As a fan of the Hanshin Tigers, one of my favorite players in recent years had been southpaw pitcher Haruto Takahashi. Considered one of the best hurlers in NPB and arguably the best lefty in 2021, Haruto underwent Tommy John surgery, left ulnar shortening surgery and arthroscopic cleaning surgery to his left shoulder which kept him off the mound throughout 2022 and 2023. After rehabbing on the farm since the start of 2024, the 28-year-old made his first NPB appearance in 1009 days and looked excellent, tossing 89 pitches over 5 innings and striking out seven including three in the 1st inning to help lead the Tigers to a 4-0 shutout victory over the Hiroshima Carp in Osaka. Home runs from rookie Ukyo Maegawa and Yusuke Ohyama - his 10th of the season - helped earn Haruto his first NPB win since 2021 October 23. So glad to see him back! On the flip side, the Yomiuri Giants announced that Dominican outfielder Elier Hernandez had fractured his left wrist while attempting a sliding catch in the 5th inning and could likely miss the remainder of the season. Tough luck for a player who was having a stellar year in his debut season in Japan. The Giants defeated the Chunichi Dragons 3-1 with pitcher Tomoyuki Sugano earning his league-leading 11th win of the year. Yomiuri Giants outfielder Elier Hernandez had to be carted off the field with what appears to be a severe wrist injury.https://t.co/Bh9KjVJQOX— Yakyu Cosmopolitan (@yakyucosmo) August 11, 2024 In a dominating performance, Atsuki Taneichi tossed his second complete game of the season to lead the Lotte Marines to a 6-1 win over the Orix Buffaloes. Taneichi faced just two batters over the minimum, allowing two hits and no walks over 96 pitches for his seventh win of the year. A RBI-sacrifice fly from Leandro Cedeño in the 5th inning prevented Taneichi from pitching a 'Maddux'. A two-run home run by Yudai Fujioka in the opening frame held up as the game-winning hit.
