As summer fades to fall, so too does the 2024 MLS season begin to fade into the playoffs. This past week saw Messi return and and score a pair of goals and assist on a third as Miami saw off a game Philly side 3-1 at Chase Stadium. With the win Miami moved one step closer to claiming their first shield and also setting the all time points record for a single season in MLS. Nashville kept their playoff hopes alive, while also putting a dent in Atlanta's postseason ship, with their 2-0 victory in the ATL. Montreal finally won a game, beating a suddenly slumping Charlotte 2-1 at Stade Saputo. Orlando is good again! They beat those lowly Revs 3-0 at Inter & Co. Toronto and Chicago both picked up much needed 2-1 home wins over Austin and Red Bull NY respectively. Houston is surging, despite injuries, as they beat a slumping RSL 4-1 in space city. Colorado keeps on winning as they were 2-1 victors over the Timbers. In the best game of the weekend the Galaxy and LAFC played a classic in El Trafico. LAFC blew a tire, and the Galaxy scored 4 second half goals to stun the black and gold 4-2. This week sees Wednesday night action, and a full slate of weekend games too. The Pigeons take on Philly in the Bronx in a game that is crucial for both teams playoff aspirations. Atlanta welcome Messi and Friendfs to the Benz. Orlando and Charlotte square off in the City Beautiful. The suddenly hot Whitecaps travel to the bayou to take on the high flying Dynamo. Nashville and Chicago look to keep their playoff hopes alive in Music City. The Timbers host the Galaxy. Idle teams Wednesday: DC United, New York Red Bulls, St. Louis City Idle on Saturday: Seattle Sounders
LAFC Colorado, and Salt Lake could clinch playoff spots tonight and SKC could be eliminated. The clinching scenarios all require a win and at least one of the other two teams that could clinch need to get points. (LAFC needs a Salt Lake result, Salt Lake needs a LAFC result, and Colorado needs both an LAFC and Salt Lake result)
Here are the MLS Disciplinary Summary and Player Availability Report for the Wednesday September 18 matches.
Philly has gone out in front and is temporarily above the playoff line, moving ahead of DC NYC 0-1 Philly
Why are games happening? Why is this a thing? It all needs to end. I had no idea there were games tonight until I was skimming channels and saw MLS Soccer listed for FS1...
New England 2-0 Montreal Keep in mind NE still has a game in hand over the teams above them and will have the 1st tiebreaker in their favor.
My nil-nil match-watching locator device seems to be calibrated well tonight. Bernardeschi almost ruined that nil-nil early for Toronto, but the crossbar intervened.
Time to turn my attention to the Western Conference - Houston v Vancouver and Seattle v San Jose are my games of viewing interest (sadly the Portland - LA Galaxy game is the same time as Seattle).
Not nil-nil in KC anymore KC 1-0 Colorado Colorado needs to win or will be in danger of dropping out of the top 4.
