Stott and Terry Jr have swapped VAR assignments. Additionally, the AVAR for ATL/CIN is now Tony Obas as Zablocki has been moved into the *VAR* slot for CLB/POR in place of Mariscal.
PK called in Montréal by Freemon (aGAIN?) in minute 20 goes check complete, but I'd love to hear some opinions.
I mean, I get wanting to disincentivize time wasting but forcing a hockey style power play because someone took a few seconds too long getting to his feet seems kinda dumb. I don't think this helps player safety or competition integrity
I think this is probably a PK from what I can see on the Apple TV feed, but I'm also convinced that it's not clearly and obviously wrong. If Freemon had not called it, a review wouldn't have been recommended either. For my very limited money, Jorge Gonzalez (who is the VAR) is right up there with Kevin Stott as one of the top VARs in the league. He took a very long look, and I agree with his decision not to recommend a review.
I think it's two weeks in a row that Freemon is finding penalties that nobody expects. Last week on this week in video review, they said it shouldn't have been a penalty. On today's penalty the VAR probably saw there was actual contact so they didn't send it down. But it didn't feel like anyone actually expected a penalty.
Technically it’s two of three weeks, not two weeks in a row. The week in between was the odd full time whistle in Atlanta.
41" in SEA-VAN the first OFR + announcement. Touchan presses the Vokkero button and says "After review, #25 Green committed a serious foul play offence, the final decision is red card". Then goes to do the usual wave off the yellow and show the red. Thankfully we had the stadium announcement otherwise no one would have understood that the player was being sent off.
The review process was also horrendously long. Foul at 37:18, play stopped by the referee at 37:27, and the red card doesn’t get shown until five minutes later at 42:40.
Excuse the fan account I’m getting these videos from, but this seems like a pretty clear miss in Columbus. No idea how this isn't called a pen on the field, let alone not even reviewed by VAR. https://t.co/j9L1hoaw5I pic.twitter.com/fPU0mxOV7c— GCGBAG ☆☆☆ (@gcgbag96) April 21, 2024
On a positive note, the two review announcements so far have been crisply executed, and noticeably better than the implementation we’ve seen in FIFA competitions. The technology is functioning as intended, the procedure seems practiced and prepared, and the communication is clear. I still don’t see what this adds in 95% of cases where all we get is “a serious foul play offense was committed” or “a foul was committed,” but at least it’s not the disaster we’ve seen in some FIFA events.
Team X has one substitution stoppage and one substitution (player) remaining. Team X has the game stopped for a substitution. Fourth official raises the board for player #55 to leave the game for player #66. Player #55 refuses to leave the field after a period of time. I assume that play resumes after the failed substitution...?? Does Team X still have a substitution stoppage and a substitution remaining? If Team X does have both remaining, does the substitute player have to wait on the sideline for 60 seconds, after the next stoppage, before entering, after the substituted player leaves even if that player leaves within 10 seconds during the subsequent stoppage?
Cut a little slack for a few weeks. The review process is going to include these guys giving a practice of what they’re going to say so they don’t sound like complete buffoons.
Second half at LAFC-NY. The VAR recommended a review to overturn a penalty kick awarded to LAFC for a defender tripping Bounga but the referee stuck with his decision (lol). My opinion in this case I is, think Gonzalez Jr. was quite right to maintain his decision. One angle sort of makes it look like Bounga was initiating the contact, but he’s trying to cut back to move towards the ball and the defender’s trip prevents him from doing so.
This sounds like a nice excuse, because you are correct that referees have been instructed to rehearse/script the announcement before leaving the RRA, but it simply does not account for the time used here. Foul at 37:18. VAR doesn't call down until 39:55. All while there is an injury to tend to and after Touchan deals with the (warranted) dissent around applying advantage and then stopping the ball. That's 2 1/2 minutes that has nothing to do with the announcement. And then Touchan is still intently watching the play until 41:55 at the screen. So about 1 3/4 minutes at the RRA to make a decision once you deduct some transit time. For maybe the last 5 seconds or so, he seems to be looking to confirm numbers and such. And then he walks to do the announcement where I would imagine Gonzalez is walking it through with him. I could maybe concede 10 or so seconds for the rehearsal and another 10-15 seconds for the announcement itself. Maybe. This was still a 5+ minute review without any public announcement. I am quite sure that PRO won't be cutting slack internally on this one. That said, great job from Touchan and team getting the second SFP card correct live.
There was long delay after the Rapids first goal last night as they checked for offside on the initial ball to start the attack. MY guess is that they didn't have a very good angle as the bad angle Apple showed made it hard to determine anything other than it was very close. Still seemed extra-long before giving the check cleared to the CR.
https://www.mlssoccer.com/video/hig...ball-club-vs-new-york-red-bulls-april-20-2024 2 minutes, I think it was a good decision to stick with it. Yeah black does stumble and initially top of his foot makes contact with yellow defender, but yellow completely overruns the ball making no contact and wraps black's leg up between his.
What a great call from Mendoza at 70' for the DOGSO-red penalty in LA. There's the slighest of touches on the leg, but it's a hold/pull all the way. Great to see that called live, particularly as the shot came off.
Reviewed the off field treatment rule (OTR) and it's hard to see how Villarreal handled this correctly in Atlanta Off Field Treatment Rule: If the referee stops play due to a potential player injury in which the player remains on the ground for more than 15 seconds and the medical staff enters the field of play, the player may be required to leave the field of play for two minutes. The two-minute treatment period begins once the ball is put back into play. Time is kept by the fourth official with the support of the assistant video assistant referee (AVAR). Exceptions: The player indicates to the referee that he does not need medical staff to enter the field and resumes playing. The player voluntarily removes himself from the field of play to receive treatment from medical staff. Potential head injury (e.g., concussion). Suspected head injuries will be managed in accordance with MLS head injury protocols. Cardiac issue or life-threatening event (e.g., seizure, choking, etc.) will be managed according to the In-Match Medical Emergency Action Plan. The player is injured on a foul that resulted in a yellow or red card. Additionally, OTR does not apply to the assessment of potential injuries involving the following: Goalkeepers Penalty kick situations when the potentially injured player is the penalty kick taker. Instances when two players on the same team require medical staff to enter the field for an injury. Collisions involving the goalkeeper and an opposing player whereby both players require medical attention. A player is bleeding.
I thought the new treatment rule worked great. For the most part, refs approached, “get up or your going off”. Most players immediately got up.
