It's NY. Both teams, specially by who they are owned by, should be competing year after year along with the other big market teams for an MLS Cup. Or at the very minimum for putting butts in seats if marketing is their priority. But in Red Bull's case we have no idea what they want to achieve. I don't think they have an idea either. I'll give it to NYCFC, they at least already won an MLS Cup.
You mean like the Jets, Mets, Nets, Rangers and Islanders don't? And the Yankees, Giants and Knicks don't as often as they should given, the money they spend? The Red Bulls aren't from New York. They're from New Jersey, which is a suburb of Philadelphia. And they do have three Supporters Shields.
Those other leagues are limited by player pool which it's mainly here. Soccer is a world wide sport that has a bigger player pool. With their scouting networks and where they are located it should be easy for them (easier than the rest of MLS) to get quality players. But I'll leave at that. RBNY fans are happy how their team operates that's why they have that massive support and never complain about how RB operates.
They've only won twice in two months, so like...I guess, but they have the potential to be a great one if they had a striker. The fans are rightly furious about the team's inaction in the summer window. Another overpriced Euro project that's inevitably going to fail in a position where they desperately need a great player today is a lousy signing and a waste of money right now. Why are you defending the Red Bulls so much here anyway?
I don't think I'm defending them "excessively". What's "excessive" about it? They're in 4th place in the Eastern Conference and 8th in the Supporters Shield. When I've seen them they've looked pretty good but I admit I haven't seen them since I moved back to the UK. New York City haven't had an effective striker since Castellanos left and he was a converted winger who just started banging them in. You know who else is upset about their team's inaction in the summer window? 90% of soccer fans globally! You know who's going to be upset about their team's form, their lack of ambition, they're clueless coach and greedy owners over the next 6 months, 90% of soccer fans globally. In 3 hours time Notts County will put together some beautiful 20+ pass moves, have 70% of possession, look like world-beaters in midfield, fail to get more than a couple of shots on target, commit defensive hara kiri, and lose 3-0 in at Tranmere in front of 2,000 traveling fans. Then we'll complain about our ambitious owners spending 7 figures on the pitch while selling our best striker in 20 years for peanuts and not using the money to upgrade the defense. It's what fans do.
Sorry to quote myself, but Puertas did not start today vs Westerlo and YA's Brian Reynolds and Griffin Yow (on the bench in his return from the Olympics). It looks like the transfer rumor might have legs after all.
Notts County today 65% possession 476 to 236 accurate passes 1 shot on target Tranmere were too incompetent to score Final 0-0
NIEUWS (via collega Marcel van der Kraan): #Feyenoord bereikt overeenstemming met MLS-club Charlotte FC over transfersom Calvin #Stengs.💰Amerikanen bereid ruim 8 miljoen euro te betalen.✍️ aanvaller kan 4 jaar tekenen.https://t.co/89rErfLY7K— Mike Verweij (@MikeVerweij) August 10, 2024 Looks like Charlotte may have found the #10 they were looking for.
RSL has a bid in for Polish youth international Dominik Marczuk of Jagiellonia Bialystok of the Polish first team. He's a right winger so we speculate Andres Gomez may be on the verge of being sold. Marczuk had his first senior team call up in March. 🚨Dominik Marczuk może odejść do MLS. Jest konkretna oferta z Realu Salt Lake. Czy to ostatnie dni skrzydłowego w Jagiellonii Białystok? Because the transfer record out of that division is $1.8 million for a guy that Charlotte bought who's now in the Greek second division. $1.6 million for any player out of that league is prima facie an overpay. Also, like, it's the Red Bulls. Their track record doesn't afford them any benefit of the doubt.
Andres Gomez is off to Ligue 1, 10th largest fee in MLS history (though I don't know what it is). Doyle confirmed. EDIT: $11m plus $2m in add ons/incentives.
I agree with you on believing that it seems like an overpay based on the history of outbound transfers from that league. Considering a spanish player that couldn't get to play above the Spanish Third Division wrecked face last year in that league (goal every 117 minutes) there is every reason to be skeptical of that signing. Maybe they are just ahead of the curve but it feels like a reach. Especially considering that strikers in that age group typically have struggled when they come to MLS and take several years to adjust (except Duran in Chicago, but he was widely considered one of the better striking prospects in his age group when Chicago signed him). As for Gomez; that is a good piece of business for RSL. Upwards of 10 million in profit on that deal depending on the sell-on percentage Millionarios has. Also, that frees up a DP slot (he was moved into that slot to open up a U-22 slot) for Goncalves. Going to assume they are running the 2 DP/4 U-22 + a million GAM this year. The new Polish signing would take a U-22 slot (their 4th) and the GAM would buy Crooks down so they are down to 2 DPs. In other news, the Galaxy are getting some more money as Julian Araujo is being sold to Bournemouth from Barca for 10 million. Fabrizio has tweeted that Calvin Stengs has a medical scheduled in London on Monday for his move to Charlotte. And Nice and RB Salzburg are apparently both looking at deals for Moises Bombito. If Derek Cornelius (who was meh in Vancouver) is worth 4 million from Malmo to Marseille than Bombito is got to be worth a nice chunk of change north of that.
They have scouts and this kid is allegedly attracting interest from big clubs. I don't know why it's taken him so long to make his professional debut. For a mere $1.5 million they may as well take a punt. He could be the next Jamie Vardy.
Selling players is nice and all but selling one of your best players when you are chasing a title like RSL is? I don't know how fans will start liking that. I see more fans bragging about player sales over actually winning. It sure brings money to MLS owners but at what cost to the fans from a fan perspective?
It's the Red Bulls. If he was that good he would be in Leipzig or Salzburg not MLS or any of their other properties.
We made at least $15m selling two players and are immediately bringing in touted replacements and some depth as well. I'll take it.
What your ownership is doing is the correct way to do it. You move players on but you go out and spend that money in a way that the fans can understand. It is the exact opposite of what the Union have done. They are putting that money into the team just not in ways the fans really see. They continue to funnel that money into the academy system, which is all fine and well. But eventually the fans will turn on you when you keep making sales for millions of dollars and your record inbound transfer fee is like half of the guaranteed money you are getting for the sale of a 14 year old. I'm pretty sure that the Union's record transfer fee is beat by every other team in the league (yes, even Montreal).
Hey now! They paid Kai Wagner. The issue with what the Union have done is that they haven’t moved along players that have peaked (Elliott, Blake, Martinez). They’re a victim of their own success in a way. They built a solid team, with depth. They came within what 30 seconds of winning it all in 2022? One bad game of winning the shield in 2022. Made the CCL semi’s in 2023. Fans suddenly got pissed this season because the entire team was injured, on international duty, or suspended all at the same time…..and they went on their first poor stretch of form in nearly 8 years. These same fans want the team to spend more on depth, yet have zero clue that the Union have maxed out their first team roster spots (on budget). They get pissed that they sold Carranza, even though they were trying to move him for the past year. Not selling him sooner prevented the Union from bringing anyone in during the winter transfer window. These are the same fans that had written off Tai Baribo before he’d even gotten a run of games. It’s the same fanbase that still thinks Gazdag isn’t good, and they prefer Brenden Aaronson. would I like to see them spend more? Absolutely. I also realize that in order to do that players are going to have to be moved on (sold, traded, released, etc). Some of those players will be fan faves too. Ernst Tanner is still one of the best directors in the league. He’s had a few players not workout as planned recently, and he quickly moved on from them. will the Union win MLS cup this season? Most likely not. Will they make the playoffs? I wouldn’t bet against them if they are healthy, and they’ll be a tough out. IMO, they’ll make some bigger, more significant moves (for them) this offseason and be a better team next season.
With money that was already in the budget via cap and allocation money. Eventually you need to spend some sort of money when you hype up that you have developed and sold tens of millions of dollars in players. The sentiment of even normal fans can come down to this interaction I had at the Cruz Azul game. Uhre missed that wide open header and I said "man, we need to dump him and get someone that is more goal dangerous". Guy near me said "don't worry he is out of contract the end of the year". When I told him there was still an option year left he said "I guess he'll be back then because it is cheaper than replacing him". When some random person I've never seen at a game expects the team to cheap out is when you get into trouble. It is one thing when teams in places that are smaller than Philly like Salt Lake City and Columbus are blowing their doors off in terms of spending. It is another when traditionally stingy teams like New England, San Jose, and Colorado start splashing cash while your team says "I'll take a player for 1.4 million in GAM, thank you". Of course, I guess I'm just partially annoyed that Charlotte built out a good team and then went "we'll go get a really good #10" (that deal with Stengs is apparently all but done) and then said why don't we try this as well: 🚨🔵 EXCL: Charlotte FC executive now in London start talks for ambitious move to bring Miguel Almirón back to MLS.Initial approach already made with Newcastle, not an easy deal but Charlotte FC trying.⚠️ Two days left before end of transfer window in MLS. pic.twitter.com/XAllj8Tk0E— Fabrizio Romano (@FabrizioRomano) August 12, 2024
