i am 100% convinced that EURO SNOBS will never change their minds-- and we should stop worrying about what they say-- we are beyond that, arent we ?? MLS is a solid, growing league and for those that have been here for over a decade, we are not only amazed at what has happened, but also where it is going
Game bloat is effecting MLS and European leagues in very similar ways. The top Euro teams are deeper but injuries and play quality are real issues. The expanded champions league is an abomination like the leagues cup and extra first round MLS Playoff games. Most players have a short professional playing career and the need to suck as much money as possible in the shortest time possible is bad for their careers. They don't want it, we don't want it. The only people that want it are the broadcasters and the leagues for revenue.
Oh, the players don’t want the extra games, sure, but are they willing to see their pay cut by 5 or 10% when some of those extraneous matches are eliminated? I don’t think they are. It’s like NFL players…they rail against the lack of security in the standard NFL contract. But if every team had to pay out contracts to underperforming aged players, that means less money for actual players; teams cut guys to free up money to pay other guys. NFL players like only half of that scenario. But you can’t have one without the other.
I did mention that the broadcasters and the team owners want the revenue from the extra matches. The fans and players don’t want the extra games and the dilution of quality or increased injuries to star players.
Nobody's contract was renegotiated for a raise when the UCL path to the final increased from 13 to 17 games.
Players in Europe traditionally get win bonuses and a share of prize money. So without looking at each contract we don't know what an individual's earnings are. Last season Inter gave the squad €2 million for reaching the knockout stage and €2 million for advancing therein. They would have shared €5 million had they won the final.
Based on what you wrote the bonuses are for reaching the next rounds. Extra games doesn't mean more money it means less money per game per round.
It isn't about watching. People will watch games that are on. Take away an extra game and the fans won't complain. Nobody was clamoring for the UCL to change to force more teams and more games in the early rounds. Compound that with National Team creep (Euros, Nations League (WTF) and Concacaf Gold Crap and Concalaf nations league). More international windows, more club matches - same rosters, same salary cap, less quality, more injuries.
In those cases. I don't know what is in every player's contract. There's no collective agreement. Players get win bonuses, appearance bonuses, performance bonuses, all sorts. They're generally not on fixed salaries.
That's 100% incorrect. All players are on fixed contracts with performance incentives. Some leagues pay twice yearly, some more frequently. There is always base pay. Always. That's how FFP works.
From someone who works in the Premier League. "Typically for elite players at EPL clubs, the schedule will contain a wide variety of clauses including bonuses for appearances and/or winning a game in a particular competition, scoring or assisting goals (though such clauses are becoming rarer), release clauses when a transfer bid of a certain amount of money is made, wage increase/reduction clauses in case of promotion/relegation and what the club will pay to the player’s agent by way of commission." "Typically, the EPL and Champions League appearance and win bonuses will be much larger than FA Cup or League Cup bonuses". https://www.danielgeey.com/done-deal-blog/when-is-an-appearance-not-an-appearance#:~:text=Alternatively, for an established EPL,match and the team wins.
If you’ve played the game Football Manager, one of the things that I can’t believe is realistic, but it must be or else they would have changed it, is comparing superstars’ contracts to young players trying to become superstars. The former gets huge guaranteed salary…but then they also want huge bonuses for playing and scoring and assisting. And I’m like, for this much money, I’m expecting you to play all the time and score all the time so why should you get bonuses? Meanwhile, the logical thing to do with promising but unproven players is contracts light in guaranteed pay but heavy on bonuses if the player reaches his potential. But it doesn’t work like that. I’ve accepted it now, but when I first noticed this phenomenon a decade or whatever ago when FM upgraded the realism of contracts it bugged me. I wanted to call the player into my office and say, you’ll be the 2nd highest paid player on the team, so why should I be paying you thousands for every goal and every game played on top of that? Doesn’t make logical sense.
Is there a MLS version of FM with DPs, HGPs, GAM, TAM, WAM, BAM thank you mam? If not there should be. Non yanks would find it fascinating.
There is a fully licensed MLS in football manager that tries to follow all the rules. I tried to win the CWC with an MLS team for hundreds of hours and failed but I did win it with a Liga mx team lol
You literally described bonuses and performance incentives. That’s not in lieu of a fixed wage that is in addition to it.
