Very good numbers for the MLS Saturday games as the 2024 season comes into the home stretch. Montreal (vs. Charlotte) 19,619 DC United (vs. New York City) 19,215 Miami (vs. Philadelphia) 20,915 Orlando (vs. New England) 22,062 Toronto (vs. Austin) 25,538 Atlanta (vs. Nashville) 43,330 Cincinnati (vs. Columbus) 25,513 Chicago (vs. New York Red Bulls) 22,188 St. Louis (vs. Minnesota) 22,423 Houston (vs. Real Salt Lake) 15,862 Colorado (vs. Portland) 16,038 Los Angeles Galaxy (vs. Los Angeles FC) 25,174 Vancouver (vs. San Jose) 21,309 TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 299,186 AVERAGE: 23,014 The average should go up, as Seattle hosts Sporting Kansas City Sunday.
That's a little more than 1000 under capacity, at the same time as the CU-CSU game was going on. Its a good number.
From Sunday: Seattle (vs. Kansas City) 31,898 September 14-15 MLS attendance: TOTAL: 331,084 AVERAGE: 23,649
Always fun to remember back when 16k was a number we'd all rejoice over. Now, it's "not good" to some. Wild times for MLS.
The threads from 10-15 years ago where the attendance was broken down into percentage of games above 20k and (a significant) percentage of games below 10k. How many sub-10k games have there been this entire season? Any?
I can remember one Colorado match being sub 10k, because of extreme weather. I may be misremembring. There also may have been a San Jose match that was as well, but certainly no more than 2-3. It's good times for the league for sure and has been for quite a while, no matter what doomsayers may say.
Yeah there was a crowd of just under 8,000 at Colorado v Dallas when it was 30 degrees with snow piled up around the pitch. The following evening it was 68. I do wish they had a nice stadium where you could be comfortable in frigid conditions.
By the way, for those complaining about ticket prices, the cheapest tickets for the League Two match between Notts County and Gillingham on Saturday for anyone that shows up on the day is $36. They're $29 for members in advance, with big discounts for kids and old farts.
I paid $36 today (5100 yen) for my ticket to a J-2 League match next month. That's in the main stand as close to midfield as I could get.

The article has it at “over 10%.” Based on the norms of press releases, it’s probably not a lot over 10%. Seems like an increase that will help with revenue without having much effect on scarcity i.e. season ticket sales.
Even if Atlanta didn't open up all of MBS Wednesday night, MLS logged some great midweek numbers. You'd think the playoffs were around the corner, or something. New England (vs. Montreal) 18,019 New York City (vs. Philadelphia) 19,153 Atlanta (vs. Miami) 67,795 Toronto (vs. Columbus) 21,355 Orlando (vs. Charlotte) 22,902 Nashville (vs. Chicago) 27,967 Minnesota (vs. Cincinnati) 19,649 Kansas City (vs. Colorado) 14,826 Houston (vs. Vancouver) 14,282 Salt Lake City (vs. Dallas) 19,436 Los Angeles FC (vs. Austin) 22,153 Seattle (vs. San Jose) 29,326 Portland (vs. Los Angeles Galaxy) 23,165 TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 320,028 AVERAGE: 24,618
A testament to the number of season-ticket holders that MLS has managed to accrue. The stands in Nashville and New England, at least, were empty.
No, the stands were not empty at Nashville. It wasn’t 27k, but turnstile count was probably about 20-22k. I say this because there is definitely not more than 10k empty seats there (30k capacity, which is 1/3rd of seats. Back in the 1980s and early 90s the NFL would report this like these hypothetical numbers Attendance 54,310, No shows: 5,690 Capscity 65,000. So, if MLS used the same reporting technique, this might be reported something like: Att: 21,000 No shows: 6,967. Capacity 30,129.
Not sure who that would benefit, the attendance nerds on message boards? I mean a dollar spent on a ticket is a dollar spent no matter how many people actually show up. I don't see the fixation we have with half empty stands if most of those seats were already paid for; I mean sure the atmosphere improves with a full house, but most big games/rivalries are rocking meanwhile I don't think anything could save a Chicago - San Jose midweek game no matter how full Paypal Park is.
As long as they are consistent it doesn't matter. I saw Manchester United reported over 72,000 against Barnsley and although the attendance was impressive against a League One team, there were probably 2,000 empty seats visible in the sections opposite the camera alone.
https://www.stubhub.com/columbus-crew-columbus-tickets-9-25-2024/event/155082802/?quantity=2 Campeones Cup is pretty cheap on the resale market. And I don't even see a listing for the Open Cup.
Yes, it would benefit attendance nerds, but probably vendors, advertisers, and sponsors as well (assuming they don’t otherwise have access to those numbers). Personally I don’t care about profit, I mean, it’s not like any of these teams are in danger of losing money and if someone does care about the bottom line, I’m sure the unrealized parking and concession income from those no shows is an interesting metric as well. Not that I think it’s a remote possibility any league will go back to reporting those numbers again, of course, I just think they have a little more utility than just “here’s how many tickets were distributed”.
