At some point just like Leagues Cup you need to understand you're growing a new competition. You probably want someone like Apple or FOX to buy the rights over a period of time, say three different competitions. The first USMNT game had Three million viewers but the other games also did well. You also have global streaming now and in the future who knows what that will look like?

They have done so before. The last time was in Colombia in 2007. If the Copa stuck to even years and didn't conflict with the Gold Cup and they received an invitation, I'm sure they would play.

Edit: before you ask it was only shown on Telefutura and Univision in the US.

There was also the tournament in the 90s (1996?) when the US thumped Argentina.

Are you sure that was our best team? My memory is going, was that the one we had Eddie Johnson in the lineup?

US sent a B team in 2007 because it started a few days after the Gold Cup, and the Gold Cup was important as qualifying for the 2009 Confederations Cup, which went pretty well.

1995. It was a different era for the USMNT and the Copa. I don't think a coach would rest his best players against anyone these days.

I credit Gregg Berhalter's influence from the bench. :)

(Different era for me too as the furthest west I'd traveled was the Isle of Man).

Colombia v Paraguay drew 67,059 spectators. Great attendance, even better than Mexico that played there a few days earlier. That surprised me.

Oops never mind. B Copa? Yep. The A team was for Gold Cup because, as you said, we wanted that Confed Cup. Copa got pissed (rightly) and we got no more invites until the 100th.

    2097 Gold Cup

    GK: Keller, Howard, Guzan
D: Hejduk, Bocanegra (c), Onyewu, Spector, DeMerit, Parkhurst, Bornstein, Simek
    CM: Bradley, Feilhaber, Mastroeni, Clark
AM/WF/SS: Donovan, Dempsey, Beasley, Ralston, Mapp.
    CF: Ching, Johnson, Twellman

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_CONCACAF_Gold_Cup_squads

We wanted that Confed Cup berth, and so sent our best..

I think Colombian supporters actually travel (from Colombia, and from all around USA).

Vinicus Jr was looking around a LOT during his anthem. I wonder if he was observing the most expensive stadium in the world, or looking at empty seats (mostly filled in later - we're always late in LA).

True, but wasn’t that a huge boondoggle for Spectrum? I’m pretty sure that’s correct. Point being, no way they were getting $5.5 for the next contract.

The rule since somewhere around 1990 is that any ratings record that lasts for 10 years is never getting broken, as the audience continually fragments.

I can actually see this one getting broken though. For example a Messi final on Fox can get it done. And if we add up Spanish + English it will for sure get it done.

Ok sorry to keep replying to just you no seriously I’m not obsessed. :D;)

Why would *you* hate it? You live in Los Angeles. Every competition in the US gives you a chance to be there.

Yeah Spectrum couldn't figure out how many people were watching because the number was too small for any tracking mechanism. Sad. And if matches were so low, how bad was Backstage Galaxy??? Hell, even I didn't watch that lol

I just like soccer the way it is - everything coming to USA would surely diminish it long term. Look at the atmospheres for home matches in South American Copas. I'd miss that on TV. And I don't even have a selfish reason to want the Copa here - I am not the type to drop $300 on tickets for anything, so I am already priced out.

If it’s 24 teams it would make a lot of sense for Brazils group to be in Brazil, Colombia’s to be ther, etc., through the #1 seeds. Then have all the knockouts in the US.

Unconfirmed reports from Galaxy fan accounts that the Galaxy sold more tickets to their supporter section than LAFC sold to their entire section.

24 teams? That would either need invited teams from Asia and Africa or a whole lot of CONCACAF teams that have no chance.

Well.... Conmebol has 10 teams. The Gold Cup typically has 12-16 teams....... so there wouldn't be a need for that many guest teams or Concacaf minnows......
