I think the Fire saw and adopted the Cubs successful long-term marketing strategy.

Except, of course, that the Cubs "lovable losers" marketing strategy in the 1970's and 80's actually worked.
As we used to say, "It played well in Iowa," since busses would arrive daily with Iowa seniors taking in a game. (That NEVER happened with the White Sox).
Then it was "the world's largest single bar" in the 1990's and early 2000's (didn't matter what happened at the game, as frat boys, office drones and urban professionals would still show up in droves to drink and whatever).

The Fire's strategy of long time sucking has not worked from the marketing perspective.

Oh, and for the record, I loathe the Chicago Cubs with every fiber of my being. Much of that is generational, though.

In other baseball news, the Seattle Mariners are currently in first place. Maybe this year will be the year we make the World Series!

On the broadcast of the DC @ CLT game, the CLT radio play by play guy said the exact attendance. I do not recall exactly what he said but it was 30k and change.

Philadelphia-Miami will very likely be north of 19K. Standing room "seats" were being sold for last night's game.

I was thinking Charlotte would be in the 30-35k range, Philadelphia around 19, and the Red Bulls anywhere from 18-20k. Once the final figures are available, the average for the weekend should be around 24,000 which is very good.

Take away 4K from that number and you have the actual attendance.

A lot of that shift from retirees to YUPPIEs was probably from the move to night games. Cubs didn't have lights until the late 80s. One of my ex-bosses used to tell me about cutting it short in the middle of the day and walking up to the window for five dollar tickets.

Yes, I know. I lived within a few miles of Wrigley Field for over 30 years.
I lived about miles up Clark St. from Wrigley when they first installed the lights in 1988. It was quite the "controversy" at the time.

Lo and behold...all 13 attendances from Wednesday night have been retrieved!

    MLS on June 19, 2024

Montreal (vs. New York Red Bulls) 19,619
    DC United (vs. Atlanta) 15,899
    Charlotte (vs. Orlando) 28,301
    Miami (vs. Columbus) 19,939
    Toronto (vs. Nashville) 23,361
    Cincinnati (vs. Philadelphia) 24,795
    St. Louis (vs. Colorado) 22,500
Kansas City (vs. Real Salt Lake) 16,414
    Houston (vs. Seattle) 15,096
    Dallas (vs. Minnesota) 19,096
Austin (vs. Los Angeles FC) 20,738
Los Angeles Galaxy (vs. New York City) 20,043
    San Jose (vs. Portland) 12,122

    TOTAL ATTENDANCE: 257,923
    AVERAGE: 19,840

Great numbers for mid-week games here, and fans were treated to a total of 51 goals, even though DC United, St. Louis, and New York City didn't join in on the fun.

Yeah, right. If you believe that number I have some ocean view property to sell you in Omaha.

The actual number is closer to 7K, tops.
