Right now, this is Greenland's national football stadium in Nuuk: Capacity is listed as 2,000, though there are no permanent stands. There's a small amount of temporary bleacher seating brought in for matches, and the majority of spectators sit or stand on the rocky hillside that the picture is taken from. There are plans for a new, fully indoor national stadium with "several thousand" seats, which have gotten as far as actually having a design prepared for the stadium and an adjoining cultural center, but the project has been stalled by lack of funds.
Why the F can’t US soccer matches kick off at the advertised start time? Every other league on earth can do it. I thought it was a MLS defect but apparently leagues cup and the US open cup have the same problem.
The only city in a current CONCACAF country with commercial air service to Greenland is Aqaluit, Nunavut.
Because it's American soccer and they have to bow down to the TV Gods, who decided to schedule 10 minutes of ads after fans sit down on their armchairs, 30 minutes in the case of MLB on Fox.
I can't believe people still complain about this. Every American sport does this and has for at least 30 years.
Right? How have people not figured this out by now? I agree FOX's/Univision's practice of starting like 22+ minutes after the announced time is damn annoying and needs to be fixed (by announcing the actual kickoff time, to the neared 5 minutes) but every start time in American sports is 3-7 minutes after the actual listed time. I've known that since I was like 7 years old.
I didn't even know this was a thing. Well, I didn't know MLSNP was involved. This is their "Campeones Cup" between Liga de Expansion vs MLSNP. The first edition was Liga de Expansion vs USL where Tapatio beat San Antonio FC 4-1. I guess they skipped doing business with USL and went straight with MLS. Liga de Expansion is a 2nd division. Competing against USL, even if done in this "Campeones Cup" style game, was the more logical choice, IMO. MLSNP should've done some type of tournament with USL-1 since they are both considered 3rd divisions.
Lou City v Cancun will be shown on ESPN+ on September 11 though it doesn't seem to be part of a football competition.
Just for laughs, I did a Kayak search for flights to Nuuk (from Boston). The cheapest was $1,300 and all flights go through Iceland. That would be a hell of a trip!
The Nuuk airport doesn't have a runway long enough for large jetliners, so the only direct flights to Nuuk from outside Greenland are from Keflavik and Iqaluit. Flights between Denmark and Greenland go to Kangerlussuaq and Narsarsuaq. That's going to change later this year, though. A new runway is almost complete and direct flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen start in late November.
Look... if you want to get any kind of pregame coverage, there are two options: 1) The start time is exactly as advertised, which means you basically have to schedule a 30-minute pre-game show or nothing, because people would rather finish watching what they're already watching than turn off at 7:25. 2) The current plan, which gives you the essentials and a very brief preview and one commercial break. I'd rather have option 2.
On the Central American side of things, the group stage of their Cup ended last night with the seeding of the quarterfinalists below (6 of the 8 will make it to CCC). Some interesting observations being that it's pretty clear that the Costa Rican league is the best of Central America, with it possibly being the 3rd best in the region (sorry Canada); also it was a down year for the Panamian and Honduran teams, with Guatemala punching a bit above their weight (they almost had 3 teams in). I actually like this makeup of teams if 2 Costa Rican teams and 1 of each from El Salvador/Honduras/Guatemala/Nicaragua make it in.
They could play in the equivalent of the Central American or Caribbean Cup but at the moment it would be a bit pointless. I guess if Greenland and Saint Pierre & Miquelon join CONCACAF and you throw in Bermuda you could have a 4 league North Atlantic Cup where two CPL teams qualify for the CCC. Then it would be CONCANANACAF.
