Pumas is loaded with a bunch of thugs. I am quite glad to see the back of them. Can any of these teams ever lose without causing a ruckus?
Jordan Morris pk Seattle 4-0 Pumas Pumas's last two visits to Seattle have resulted in a 7-0 aggregate
Glad to see more people getting into the tournament. Decent crowd for a Monday and looks like a rivalry is blooming.
Or just brought him down with no one in front of him.... But yea, I don't know his Morris got up so quick, that looked bad.
How many Liga MX teams do you expect in the quarterfinals? I am thinking 2, but Club America can go on to win the whole thing.
Fingers crossed it’s just one Liga MX club. Sadly, zero isn’t a possibility. Can’t wait to check the scores in the morning.
Yet here you are commenting. I was shocked how Seattle put a beat down on Pumas. Wasn't even a contest after the first goal.
Nice win by Seattle, couldn’t watch as much as I wanted to but the Morris goal was ace. Another nice crowd and atmosphere for Leagues Cup.
Guesses on attendance for Cruz Azul - Mazatlan in DC tonight? Can't see that being a big draw, although Cruz Azul is one of the bigger clubs in Mexico.
Worse. Last year was about 1.16 million after the Round of 16. If the attendance average for tonight's games is 20,000, which is probably a high estimate, this year would be trailing last year by about 120,000.
so fairly comparable to and maybe even solid/healthy if you take into account the lack of “Messi” freshness of last year.. guess the big question is if the figures are satisfactory for the folks in charge
I would imagine they're more interested in what Apple is paying them, and to a lesser extent the TV ratings.
I wonder how much soccer/sports fatigue there is right now. Messi games averaged about 4,000 more attendees per game than the tournament as a whole, which is notable but not significant enough to shift the average all that much. Between the Euros, Copa, and the Olympics, there are just a lot of sports going on this summer. A 10% drop in attendance makes sense in that context. I'm more curious about how much the streaming rates have changed in the absence of Messimania. I'd guess that they're down by more than the attendance. Probably a lot more.
If we’re just guessing I’ll go with the non-Messi games being comparable to last year. And the tournament was never conceived around Messi, that was simply the stars aligning for a generational signing. I think the tournament will be back next year as is.
Correct. I've watched exactly ONE Leagues' Cup match so far. And that was Friday night when (my MLS Cup Champions) the Crew entered the competition. I used the fact that the group stage was running at the same time as the Olympics as a chance to unplug and recharge. Being a soccer fan is a year-long endeavor now. And as you pointed out, this summer was busier than most, with Euros and a USA-included Copa. And the Premier League comes back this Friday, and it's on August 16th, for chrissakes. As for the attendance difference... I wouldn't sneeze at 4,000 per game. Most of these matches are taking place at MLS venues which were probably only going to fit so many extra people in. If you can only fit 20,000, and you were getting 16,000 before, it's hard to get a bigger bump than a sellout.
I'm just saying that the attendance drop can't be attributed to the lack of Messi because his games in this tournament didn't draw astronomical numbers to begin with. Besides that, Miami games this year have drawn an average ~3,000 higher than Miami games last year.
