The 2024 Copa América is looking like it will be in the USA!! This, after the resignation of Ecuador as host country.

United States, Mexico and Canada have agreed to play. There will be invites to 3 other nations from CONCACAF.

Ecuador backing out of hosting this late due to lack of infrastructure is huge for us. They can’t do another one in Brazil and there aren’t really other options to spin up quickly with 18 months to go.

FIFA will have to approve exception(s) to enable non-CONMEBOL sides to get auto releases from clubs. Would imagine that’s being worked on now. FIFA has incentive for this given that it can be treated as a “trial run” for the World Cup in a few of the cities who will have games.

Feeling like this has a good chance of moving forward.

Early Xmas present if this comes about. This would help address the competition challenges with the USMNT that many of us having been calling out.

I heard Peru was interested in hosting? I guess that's done?

We're a Pot 1 side and avoid Argentina, Brazil and I guess either Uruguay or Ecuador in the group stage?

This is good news for the USMNT and its 2026 World Cup cycle.

    However.

FIFA and CONCACAF and CONMEBOL and all the powers that be really need to figure out how all this stuff is going to work going forward, and the ceaseless more more more of games is totally unsustainable.

Also, please tell me the TV rights for this aren't already owned by Fox, and if they aren't sell them to literally anybody else.

It had to be this way, huh? They must be making max green, otherwise they wouldn't have sent their A-team. It would have been the B-team, while we allocated the A-one to the lesser tourney.

We really should scrap the 2nd Gold Cup. They don't need to do that redundant tourney in the 1st place, especially with the inception of UNL. 2 UNL's and 2 GC's and now Copa America. 1 of each of the former, 1 of the latter, and we're good. I believe it's still more than CONMEBOL does.

This is better than not participating in Copa America (which was a must given the dearth of high stakes comp for a few year), but I wish we'd be playing in Argentina or wherever instead to battle test our guys and maximize info gathering.

Incidentally, I think the other 3 invitees should be Costa Rica, Jamaica, & Panama.

We have no qualifiers this cycle, if we don't go to Copa America we have literally zero legit senior competitions for the next 3.5 years. Unless you consider Gold Cup legit, which I do not.

We need to have more connections to Conmebol, it is quite the bitter pill that they decided to link up with UEFA for Nations League rather than us, but its mostly obvious why they'd do that. The European Market and competition is more valuable to them than the North American and Mexican Market.

Just super glad we're doing it. I'd much prefer South America host, but if we can't get that, this is the next best thing (I want real road competition). I suppose this makes sense as well from the perspective of a dry run for the World Cup, could use some of the cities associated with it, maybe all.

4 groups of 4. I guess the other concacaf sides qualify through the gold cup or ranking?
    Costa Rica, Panama and somebody?

If a tournament held in the World Cup country the summer before isn't a magnet for inviting elite outside teams, uh, what are we doing here?

If FIFA's gonna do the Confederations Cup again so be it, but if they aren't, just do the Gold Cup plus Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, whatever.

And obviously it's not always going to be a World Cup prelude, but that seems like an obvious answer to the problem of the Gold Cup generally. UEFA probably won't play ball on a regular basis, but others will.

I agree I’d rather it be on the road. That said, with the economic issues in most of South America (including Argentina) it’s really not viable to stick the tournament successfully anywhere else last minute on the continent other than Brazil (and they just hosted two in a row bc Argentina backed out of the last one due to COVID). And the 2026 World Cup is at home anyway so it can serve as a good test run and somewhat will mimic the conditions. Agree 2nd GC should be scrapped.

Could convince me of a bunch of combinations of the other 3, although I think you’ve got to bring CR so that leaves two slots. I’d probably go with Jamaica and Panama but you could make a case for El Salvador or Honduras too (especially because I think those fan bases would turn out in droves compared to the other two).

Peru currently dealing with the failed autogolpe (that's "self-coup") by their lefty nutjob president today after he tried to dissolve congress... yes that makes two failed coups over the last day, the other being some minor German aristocrat backed by right wing wackjobs (AfD, Reichburger, ex-military, Russians, and good ol QAnon)... to tie it back to soccer, Peru lost on PKs in the playoff vs Australia and Germany just crashed out of the World Cup, so the lesson here is don't suck or crazy s*** may go down politically?

What happened with the lost copa america in the USA? We had our best players then yes?

FIFA approval will be a formality. They don’t care what the clubs think.

I'd rather see us go play it in South America but if the choice is to play it here or don't play it, I'm certainly going to fall on the side of play it here. Hope we can get all our players released for it.

FIFA approved 2016 as an official joint CONMEBOL-CONCACAF event, so all normal call-up rules applied.

The CONCACAF teams in 2016 were chosen like:

USA and Mexico -- automatic invitations
Costa Rica and Jamaica -- Winners of UNCAF and CFU qualifying for Gold Cup 2015
Haiti and Panama -- Winners of playoffs involving top 4 teams. not including the above, from Gold Cup 2015

    Yes to Copa.

    No to hosting.

Hopefully another S American country jumps in there and takes hosting rights and we go.I’ve heard Colombia is interested. I’m rooting for them.

My preference is for the US to not host another tournament this decade outside the WC.

Obviously that won’t happen but point remains. What other nations host every MFing tournament their NT plays in. It’s beyond ridiculous.

Hopefully this happens. I’d 1000% rather have it here than in South America. I want to attend these games! And this group doesn’t need to prepare for away games!

Normally, I’d agree. But the next WC will be held in the US. And I think we’d always take the opportunity to play in the host nation, as would the rest of the teams.

Main thing is that I hope that this is successful enough to warrant that we just cement this moving forward. Besides, it would make sense to make this permanently a 16 team tournament with the top 6 CONCACAF teams part of the show.

FIFA has certainly bent the rules more on things that make less sense before in the past. No reason to believe that they can’t bend these rules for the betterment of everyone.

But we are hosting the World Cup in 2026, how would NOT hosting the 2024 Copa America be better than hosting it? You are making this argument the one time in **32 years** that it doesn’t make sense...

Also do you not care about the amount of money our federation would get from hosting as opposed to playing in South America? Pretty sure USSF made like $100 million from Copa America Centenario...

Everyone always loves hosting tournaments in the US. No one has the number of large stadiums we do plus every diaspora population imaginable who will ensure that they are filled. The 94 World Cup is still the most attended World Cup ever, despite it only being 24 teams.

There’s a lot more money to be made by hosting in the US and it’s why everyone jumps at the opportunity. The 2016 tournament was wildly successful financially, perhaps even too much as USSF took the greater risk and reaped the financial rewards (something CONMEBOL was not very happy about).

Besides with the next World Cup at home I’m less worried about playing tournaments elsewhere.

I have no idea why people wouldn’t want us to host. It’s baffling.

I know people like when our team gets tested on the road…but we don’t need that this cycle. We won’t be playing road qualifiers. We won’t be playing a World Cup on foreign soil.

What our team needs is tournament experience against top level sides where there is pressure to win in front of home fans. The Gold Cup is a poor approximation of that.

Copa America? It’s pretty much as close a facsimile as we can get! Every game against decent competition and at least 2 legitimate World Cup contending opponents in Brazil and Argentina!

To those that think it makes the World Cup less special to host a major event 2 years before, I say nonsense. Hosts used to host the Confederations Cup as a dry run. This would be similar.

And it’s not like CONMEBOL would get nothing out of this. Their teams would get useful experience playing in the US in a tournament setting and I am sure the tournament would make a ton more money than it would anywhere else.

Really it’s such a no brainer idea. I really hope these rumors come to fruition.
