Haiti might have a decent team. Some good young talent, some NCAA guys, they'll be a tough out. Very well traveled group too. A player from Sao Paulo, one from TSG Hoffenheim, Mexico, Sweden, Portugal..
It appears games will be on FS2, at least the opener will be https://www.foxsports.com/presspass/latest-news/weekly-schedule/?date=2024-07-19
What's interesting is that all the players still exist. They just aren't picking them. Let's see how they do this tournament without them. I suspect it won't go well, and they might be back to looking to it next cycle when they see the local population is quite mediocre at soccer.
Berchimas is one of five 2008s at the tournament. Guerra is another. Is Dallas-based Fuentes, of Honduras, American? It looks like there are quite a few 2007s.
Aidan Russell (06) is playing for the Dominican Republic. Currently plays for Dundalk in Ireland. He was born in the USA to an Irish dad and Dominican mom while his father played in USL. Interesting story here, including how the Dominican Republic found him to bring him into the fold: https://www.thesun.ie/sport/13318558/dundalk-aidan-russell-vargasworld-youth-cup-dominican-republic/
Maynor Figueroa has two sons playing in the tournament. Keyrol we all know, but his (half?) brother Dereck Moncada is selected for Honduras. Moncada is an 07 who debuted with Olimpia earlier this year. He's not as much of a physical beast as Keyrol but from what I have seen very technical and comfortable in combination.

Just a reminder that if I understand how the tournament works, we really want to win the group and take home the El Dorado. Second place (probably) gets (host) Mexico in an all or nothing game for qualifying, plus a set of steak knives. Third place might or might not advance. Of course it might be fun to get Mexico and knock them out. Getting Mexico and getting knocked out seems less fun!
What's not to like about a first round of group games played on a waterlogged field where our result was was so absurd it's hard to take much from it and the other two teams play to a tie? Let's do this, CONCACAF! One of my running gags in this house is that since soccer is always on the TV, when my wife comes into the room I always tell her "Get excited, it's Honduras-Canada!" Delighted to learn that will actually be true tonight.
Here's how the tiebreakers apparently work. My assumption here is that the tiebreakers for ranking the third-place teams are the same tiebreakers as the tiebreakers for placing teams within their actual groups. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_CONCACAF_U-20_Championship#Group_stage Goal differential counts more than goals scored (but less than actual points scored in group matches). Who knows how these other games will go, but Jamaica is already in a pretty big hole.
The DR lost its first game, to El Salvador. Remember, last time around the DR skipped the group stage because of the tournament format, then went on a rather astonishing run to the final. This time they gotta get there the old-fashioned way.
Oh, Canada. Leading 2-1 well into stoppage team they let Honduras score the tying goal with seconds left.
Somebody forgot to turn on the lights for that game and yeah, that was ridiculously brutal, what ghastly field conditions and in general it looked like a total ---- show.
If I'm reading the Wikipedia right, if we win Group A and Canada finishes as one of the two third place finishers that advance, then we play Canada in the quarterfinals. El Salvador or Honduras are two other very likely possibilities. We're very likely to play someone from Group B, I think, because the Group B winner plays one of the first place teams and the Group A plays the other. The Group C winner -- likely Mexico -- plays the Group A runner-up. I assume they won't match the Group B third place with the Group B winner. Perhaps I'm also getting ahead of my skis, but it wouldn't shock me to have goal differential be a problem for our Group A opponents. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_CONCACAF_U-20_Championship
I think Haiti might surprise tonight against Mexico. Of course they might also get run off the field but Mexico isn’t crazy good, and Haiti is like an old USA team full of college kids, hard workers, and they have a pretty good keeper.
Haiti has been pretty good in the last few U17 and U20 tournaments. They've given Mexico at least a couple of really good games, so I wouldn't be surprised if that's the case again tonight.
Well, they didn't. Mexico won 4-0 with Emi Ochoa in the nets. The other game was 3-0 Panama over Guatemala. So, that group will probably be chalk. The drama in the event seems likely to be in Group B. Emi Ochoa starts tonight for @miseleccionsubs!VAMOSSSS EMI 🇲🇽!!! https://t.co/GNFId0zvNs— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) July 22, 2024
