All the good players on that list are too long in the tooth given that we've just upped our average age considerably. I hope we don't plan on picking up any of these guys. I'm hoping that BA has more and better contacts scouting the colleges, etc. and we can retool with guys in their early 20s instead of on their last legs...

I was surprised to see Jozy still on the list. I thought he’d retired and hasn’t played in at least a year? I was joking mostly about Bruce signing him, but it could happen. We may be the oldest team in MLS before this is all over at least in terms of minutes played by age. We’re gonna party like it’s 2010!

Jozy is lazy as fvck. I sure hope we don't end up with that piece of dead weight. Yeah - he'll score some goals, but he won't work at all on getting the ball.

He's way past his prime. We need young blood as you said. You can't rebuild a club with old guys. Not and have your rebuild last.

I have to hope that il Bruce is innovative, that he can get our guys all on the same page, that he can make our guys play with more discipline, that he can weed out the deadwood on the roster. But I fear that we are going to continue to suck. I think that suck is part of our team culture and it's going to take a lot of effort to flush that out.

I actually think we'll see an improved Judd under Arena. They kept him around, because he is cheap, but also because he has the in your face vibe that Arena loves...and a bit of speed...so maybe in Arena's mind something to work with. Judd is beyond raw, he looked tuned out, pissed off and generally detached last season for a tragically inept team...really bad, awful most of the time, but I'm curious to see if Arena can be the Judd whisperer...and get something out of him over time. He is not the answer for the quality 9 we need, but might respond to Arena's coaching style...and contribute in a hopefully more stable system.

We’re gonna have an old starting lineup I’m pretty sure. Question is, can Bruce balance it with some young guys also getting some minutes as rotational or sub guys so that we’re not dead in the water in 2 years.

We had an old starting lineup in the past when we were quite good.

Bruce always uses heavy veteran teams with some young cats mixed in. I wouldn't expect the revolution and evolution of young guns. But he has a pretty good track record in the draft.

So he'll score two goals next season :sneaky:

I'm kidding. I truly hope Bruce does something to get him going because he was atrocious this past season. Didn't even look like a professional player.

The Quakes select zero players from other MLS teams, the Quakes lose one player.... does that mean the 2024 Quakes roster was really packed with talent or that the 2025 Quakes roster will be?

Or does it simply mean the Quakes technical staff is on vacation from November through February every year? :)

Now that Jacob J is gone, we clearly need another 'keeper. I hear that Matt Bersano is available! ;)

Actually without Yarbrough and Jackson the Quakes are down from 5 to 3 which is the usual number of goalkeepers

    1. Daniel
    2. Marcinkowski
    3. Ochoa

Isn't number 2 out of contract/declined? Although they could resign him.

Yeah, we declined JT's contract. Now we might resign him and we might not. Hell, he might be ready to play!

I fear that Daniel's health is shaky, so I want a viable starter to back him up. And I want another 'keeper because I lack confidence in Ochoa, and I fear that Ochoa will bail on us and go elsewhere. Maybe we can sell him for big bucks and make a profit?

Of course, I don't actually know for certain what the status of any of these GK's is. Maybe we go with these three guys, maybe not.

I was joking about Bersano, but as a third option, he might not be a bad idea. He knows us already. But we need a serious backup for Daniel. We don't want a repeat of last season where Daniel gets hurt and we have a shit backup GK.

But again, the coaches and team doctors know much better than I do about this.

For some reason, it seems to me that the Quakes have always had more keepers on roster than most MLS teams.

I'm guessing that they're gonna try to sign JT to a lower number. I think his current contract is about $300k. That's a little much for a 2nd keeper who hasn't played in a year and a half or something. We've been paying him a lot to do essentially full-time rehab. Depends on how well they think he's playing post-injury. I think with Daniel, JT, and Ochoa we'll be OK. The Town can keep that SJSU guy as their backup or promote an academy guy.

There was a season, years back, where our starting ‘keeper got injured. We had to go with our second string guy, and then needed a third GK as backup. (Was that Joe? And Jon was the backup?) So after that, Frank wanted us to carry three GK’s. We went to four GK’s more recently. But it’s fear of injury that causes us to sign an extra ‘keeper. With our history of injuries, I’m good with having an extra keeper on the roster. Last year’s experience with our #1 and #2 GK’s injured probably means that we will carry an extra ‘keeper or two this season.

    Works for me.

Cannon was injured and Busch replaced/won the starting job.

    Edit: https://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/sjs-cannon-breaks-ankle-out-6-8-weeks

so it seems Busch did start the season then got benched then Joe got injured.

Transfer primer: Western Conference teams to watch this winter

    2 San Jose Earthquakes

Eight contracts declined, on everyone from homegrowns to SuperDraft picks to imports to, in Jeremy Ebobisse's case, their starting No. 9 of the past three years. Another four guys are out of contract (including a pair of starters) and won’t be returning.

When Bruce Arena comes into a new team, he clears out as much as possible. We saw him do it with the Revs (though not this quickly) a half-decade ago, and we saw him do it with the Galaxy a decade before that. Bruce’s first priority is always building the culture, and you don’t do that by keeping a ton of guys around.

The moves have opened up more than $4 million in budget room, most of which is pure salary cap space rather than General Allocation Money (GAM). There are also a few obvious buyout candidates who could get them close to, or even over, $5 million of space.

Part of that has already been filled by acquiring Dave Romney (who’ll probably be a starter), Mark-Anthony Kaye and Ian Harkes from New England for a bit of GAM. Part of that will be filled by signing a DP No. 9, with former Cincy striker Brandon Vazquez reportedly the primary target (that would be a good get IMO). Of course, to get a DP No. 9, they’d need to move DP d-mid Carlos Gruezo, which I think they'll do.

The rest will likely be middle-of-the-roster sorts, though remember 1) San Jose have three U22 Initiative slots open, and 2) Bruce did good work with the kids during his time in Foxborough.

I’d love to see them grab Dylan Borrero and return him to his pre-ACL tear, absolutely electric form.

Dylan Borrero is a 22-year old Colombian left winger who has 6g, 6a in 2000 minutes, less than a full starter's worth of minutes for a year. He'd fit a need.
