I would add Villanova to the hot list for this fall- with the staff turnovers and complaints from athletes the administration has said the on field results need to be ‘positive’ this fall. Sounds like a lot of pressure being placed on the staff and rightfully on the head coach based on how that program has been ran.

Should DePaul be on the hot list?

If a interim head coach ends up with a better win pct than the previous year head coach, is that enough to get the head coaching job?

They look like they’re on a slide, but without getting too political it appears Chicago isn’t really a place people want to go to right now so perhaps that’s plays a factor considering the location of the campus.

I think Auburn needs to be on the hot seat or on the 'retire already' seat.

I would agree with you this time next year if they have a poor season. Would say the same Minnesota and Maryland. This year Syracuse will be very hot.

Speaking of the Big 10, what are the expectations at Illinois? Does Rayfield get to go out on her own terms and retire when she wants? They haven't made the NCAAs since 2013, and have had some bad seasons during that time. And Big 10 ain't getting any easier. Not quite the dumpster fire status like Oregon or Syracuse, but they're typically quite low in Big 10 play.

Any idea what happened as to why Anson would retire during preseason?

He realized you can reach an age when it's too hard to put out the energy you need to do a good job and should retire. Been there myself.

To protect the program from players entering the transfer portal due to a coaching change. If he announced this in June every UNC player could have entered the portal. So he protected the program from further instability. And it gives Nahas a few months to prove himself. It makes perfect sense on the timing to me.

From the article about the announcement in The Athletic:

“As many of you know I modeled our program after Dean Smith’s basketball program, and retiring at this time is a credit to his thinking, as well,” Dorrance said in a statement. “He would re-evaluate his tenure, not after the season, but after he had time to re-charge his batteries prior to the next season. When he didn’t, he retired. After last season I initially was excited about the chance to bolster our roster, which we most certainly have done, but as preseason training camp went on, I realized I didn’t have the same energy it takes to give 100% to this year’s team."

While I'd love to believe this, I can't imagine that there aren't lingering concerns about player turnover, coaching misconduct, and his ability to cope with the modern game/athlete also at play. It seems like a corner needed to be turned here.

I agree that there is more to this. Why wait until preseason has started to realize you don’t have the energy anymore? It will probably end up being that the best coach in the history of womens college soccer was forced into retirement.

The campus is in Lincoln Park. It's a great area. How much time have you spent in Chicago?

If this is accurate, he protected the program at the expense of the players. Sounds like AD. I wonder what the players would think of this and of the coaching changes. I would be none too pleased to have this change withheld to prevent me from changing my commitment.

I should clarify that this is my speculation. I do not know this to be fact. I would argue that a coach is really in a no-win situation here. You are an employee of the university and also have an obligation to the university and program.

Correct if you are familiar with the city. However most people outside of the area are not and just go off of what they hear on the news. That’s why Chicago is likely a harder place to recruit currently.

I would think there are worse things in life to playing a year for North Carolina with the assistant coach. If you end up not liking the team, you have your choice of schools next year with a transfer.

UNC Head job has just been posted. This can’t be good for the interim coach.

State school, probably just a formality. Anson retiring now, all but secures Assoc HC to take over, but state mandates making position available publically

Proposed start date on listing is 9/16/24 !!!
My guess post it now when everyone is already coaching meaning few qualified applicants would apply. Start date means only one person would be available for the job. DN
