It's the worst thing about MLS roster rules. It's impossible to avoid a lot of turnover and depth challenges in the offseason and then you have some of the most meaningful matches (CCL) right off the bat. It's a real competitive disadvantage and its built into the leagues roster rules.
It would be two coaches and GMs that both moved on from Chicho despite his production... maybe they just don't see him returning to pre-injury form?
I think it is a combo of his suspension mid-July, combined with his lack of production. Maybe they felt that he wasn't going to return to form in Salt Lake, and to get what they could now.

Not sure if this is the first but its one of the first instances of the new underclassmen draft-eligible rules being used. The Rapids drafted Anderson Rosa in last year's draft. He went back to school for a year and has just signed for Rapids 2.
