Power Rankings: Portland Timbers, St. Louis CITY get Matchday 8 boost

The Revs played well in Columbus despite going down to 10 men, but a late, looping header found the net for the Crew to set the final scoreline at 1-1.

Despite the draw and what Bruce Arena described as “phony baloney” calls, the Revs are on top of the Eastern Conference a fifth of the way into the season. It seems like Latif Blessing has found his place in New England’s midfield and the team as a whole is clicking.

You can go ahead and expect them to hang around the top of the standings for a while. At least as long as Djordje Petrovic is here.

The Revs took care of business against Sporting KC. A lot of people are these days, but that doesn’t change the fact New England are sitting on top of the Eastern Conference. Good soccer team is good, and it appears Giacomo Vrioni is as well.

Dylan Borrero’s knee injury is a tremendous bummer for so many reasons. We lost one of the most exciting young players in the league for an extended period and the Revs lost the kind of dynamic attacking presence that seemed key to replicating New England’s record-setting formula from 2021. The ceiling hasn’t come crashing down without Borrero, but it’s definitely been lowered.

All that being said, it’s not like they’re going anywhere at the top of the East. Especially not while Djordje Petrovic is around.

The Revs kept rolling in their first match since Dylan Borrero’s season-ending ACL injury, cruising past Toronto at BMO Field. Just another nice and easy three points that’s become the norm in New England. The Revs are the most consistent team in the Eastern Conference right now and, even without Borrero, it’s hard to see them stumbling too much for too long anytime soon.

New England put in one of their least inspiring performances of the season so far and fell to a suddenly red-hot Inter Miami team at home. I guess we can just chalk it up to “MLS” for now. The underlying numbers and the standings still love the Revs though.

Are the injuries starting to show up a bit? That’s two straight losses for the Revs after getting whomped on by Philly last weekend. Dylan Borrero is out for the year, Henry Kessler is sidelined long-term, Gustavo Bou is still out and Carles Gil left the Philly loss early. There were already questions in attack with this group and those get amplified exponentially without Gil. No real reason to panic (yet), just something to keep an eye on.

The Revs have given up three goals in back-to-back weeks and have taken just one point in their last three games. It feels like the long-term injury to center back Henry Kessler is causing some issues at the back. The growing list of injuries elsewhere in the lineup can’t be helping much either. We’re in a moment where the Revs need to be patient and just survive as best they can until they can get something close to healthy. The good news at least is that they still have Noel Buck…

The Revs played a barnburner on Wednesday in Atlanta and came out with a point. They followed that up with a sleepy 0-0 draw at NYCFC over the weekend. Odd week. Odd stretch. That’s five games without a win for New England and just one win in their last seven (1W-2L-4D).

With 27 points, the revs still have more banked than every western team save 1. A fun observation was that 7 of the top 10 teams currently come from the east

The Revs took advantage of Bobby Wood’s excellent form and a couple of Nashville losses this week to jump into second place in the East. That feels like a huge accomplishment after losing Dylan Borrero for the season last month. New England are now undefeated in their last six games and have taken 12 points over that stretch.

The Revs went toe-to-toe with FC Cincinnati and became the first team all year to come out of TQL Stadium with a point of any kind. They’re second in the league on points per game and one of the few teams left who even has a shot at catching up to FC Cincinnati. The odds aren’t great, but with Djordje Petrovic and Carles Gil, pretty much anything is possible.

The Revs, understandably, were less than happy with Video Review disallowing their game-tying goal against the Red Bulls. The Professional Referee Organization (PRO) admitted they got it wrong, though, and now they’re closer to eighth-place D.C. United than first-place FC Cincinnati.

The last time we talked about the Revs in the Power Rankings, things were going well. Dear reader, a lot has changed.

Head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena has been placed on administrative leave, star goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic sat out of training in protest of how the club handled his potential transfer to Europe and starting right back Brandon Bye picked up a season-ending knee injury.

All of this contributed to New England losing in the of Leagues Cup Round of 16 against Querétaro.

They’re still second in the East with 11 games to go, but the last few weeks have not necessarily been fun.

The Revs didn’t play last weekend, but they weren’t short on news.

It’s an incredible return and a remarkable achievement for the Revs to reportedly earn about $25 million in transfer fees from their last two goalkeepers. But that doesn’t help them in the short term. It’s hard to overstate how important Petrovic is to their success. He’s been the best goalkeeper in the league by a significant margin since he arrived and has helped the New England defense consistently outperform their expected goals allowed numbers.

Maybe they have a high-quality, ready-made replacement waiting in the wings?

Throw in the continued absence of Bruce Arena and Brandon Bye’s season-ending knee injury, and their weekend loss to Montréal didn’t necessarily come as a surprise. It seems like the Revs will have a tough time rolling safely out of this fall.

Djordje Petrovic is officially gone to Chelsea. It would be hard to overstate how important Matt Turner and Petrovic have been to the Revs' success over the last few years. Unless they’ve somehow found literally the greatest shot-stopper in MLS history for the third time in a row with new signing Tomáš Vaclík, a 34-year-old free agent, it seems very likely New England will take a step backward.

FWIW, in his podcast, Frank Dell'Apa said that he thinks that Vaclik is going to be really good - and, since he's played in England, won't have the language issues that Petrovic had (he mentioned that last year there were serious communication issues, though that had been better this year).

My worry is that the season is winding down pretty fast now and he's still waiting for his visa.

The Revs bounced back from a loss at Montréal with a four-point week. They eased past the Red Bulls midweek and picked up a draw against Austin on Saturday. So far, so good in the post-Djordje Petrovic era, even if they’ll be kicking themselves for allowing a stoppage-time equalizer to Austin.

For now, they’re still second in the East and have a chance to keep putting distance between themselves and the rest of the pack over the next four games. Minnesota, Colorado, Chicago and Charlotte is about as gentle a lead-in to the final stretch as they could have asked for. They’ll need to get some separation there before they head into a four-game playoff tune-up against Columbus, Orlando, Nashville and Philadelphia.

Bruce Arena has resigned and they dropped points on the road thanks to an assist from Minnesota’s goalkeeper. Bad week.

They’re still second in the league on points per game, though. It’s a good team. Even if there’s genuine reason to be concerned about their ceiling after the last few weeks of significant transfers, injuries and changes.

Saturday's loss at the Rapids didn’t exactly stun anyone (at least externally) when it happened. Not after the week the Revs had. There’s just been too much internal turnover to expect them to perform at a high level. It’s fair to wonder if they can pull out of the potential nosedive they seem to be tilting toward.

Regardless, it's time to step it up. We've got 6 games left, away to Chicago, Nashville and Orlando and home to Columbus, Charlotte, and Philly.

They really have to take all 3 points Saturday. We're in the thick of it with Philly, Columbus and Orlando with Nashville not far behind and Chicago and Charlotte fighting for their playoff lives. None of these games are going to be easy...

Yes. And you don't just make a leap from struggling against bad teams to being competitive with good teams. We need to start building back our rhythm and control of the game, so that we can compete with the good teams. There's a lot of talent and depth on the Revs, maybe more than ever, but they need to start playing like it.
