Thank you for this. As a result, it led me to poking around and discovering that Round Rock has a team that's been in USL2 since 2020!

Let's look at possible numbers in the pro division for 2023. MLS: 25 eligible teams now + St. Louis in 2023 = 26 USL-C: 23 eligible teams now + OKC and Queensboro in 2023 = 25 USL-1: 11 eligible teams now + Lexington and Spokane in 2023 = 13 MLS-NP: Rochester is the only one we know of now = 1 NISA: 9/10 eligible teams now + ? in 2023 = 10 or 12, maybe That's around 75-77 pro teams. If we work backward: Round of 32: 8 MLS seeds + 24 winners 3rd Round: 18 MLS teams + 30 winners 2nd Round: 25 USLC teams + 35 winners 1st Round: 13 USL1 + 1 MLSNP + 12 NISA + 44 Open Division teams That could be a total of 121 teams in the tournament. Obviously if they have some DIII teams start in the 2nd round that changes the number of Open Division teams. Anyone have other numbers?
2022 tournament: 103 teams total, 71 pro division 2021: 102 total, 65 pro CANCELLED 2020: 100 total, 62 pro CANCELLED 2019: 84 total, 52 pro 2018: 97 total, 42 pro 2017: 99 total, 43 pro Things really jumped in the last couple of years as far as pro teams.
An interesting consequence if Sacramento wins the 2022 Open Cup. Commissioner sent us a message, so we have to make a small correction. If @SacRepublicFC does win the cup on September 7, they would qualify for @TheChampions and thus be one of the seeded teams, getting slotted 2 rounds ahead of the rest of the @USLChampionship teams next year. https://t.co/prMZ3PHI5s— TheCup.us (@usopencup) July 29, 2022 If that happens, then the round by round breakdown could look like this: Round of 32: 7 MLS + Sacramento seeds + 24 winners 3rd Round: 19 MLS teams + 29 winners 2nd Round: 25 USLC teams + 33 winners 1st Round: 13 USL1 + 1 MLSNP + 12 NISA + 42 Open Division teams That could be a total of 119 teams in the tournament. Obviously if they have some DIII teams start in the 2nd round that changes the number of Open Division teams. So Sacramento could possibly knock out a couple of Open Division teams. If they win the Cup. We'll see what happens.
