Well done @ThePonchat, would have to think your work is done for this year!! Thanks for keeping us straight!
Agreed, thanks The Ponchat for all the good work. With things looking done for the year (although who knows?), here are some current data tables:
Is it Anson at 45 (going 46)? https://goheels.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/coaches/anson-dorrance/4275
Yes, it is Anson. My numbers do not include the early AIAW years, just NCAA, which started in 1982. The numbers do not include this year, which is why a bunch of coaches are at 0 years.
Why not? Do years in NAIA, NCAA D2, and NCAA D3 count when schools moved to NCAA D1 and retained their coach or do their counters get reset to only include their NCAA D1 years?
Good question. For Dorrance, his situation is one-of-a-kind and does not apply to anyone else, so I have re-set his first year as 1979 (in the workbook where I keep these data), which puts him at 45 years. For other coaches, my numbers include only their D1 years at their current school, so my numbers reflect how long coaches tend to stay at schools, rather than how long they tend to coach. Within the NCAA Statistics system, there is a way to call up a coach's history that appears to go back at last through the coach's history irrespective of the NCAA division.
Two head coach jobs opening up this coming week would be surprising and interesting. If it is true, is it possible some schools already are implementing responses to the NIL and other litigation, including by telling staff they are going to need to absorb pay cuts? Or do other things the coaches are not willing to do?
Agree, will be very interesting. Life does just happen to folks sometimes. And there have been examples of coaches wanting their assistants to get a chance so leave late. Oregon St. had few choices for example. For another thread perhaps, but budget cuts are looming some places for a lot of reasons. The biggest rumbling I get is this roster limit idea. One possibility is that P4 coaches get a fixed sum of $ to distribute to their roster pretty evenly but then have a limit on that number. Kinda what hoops coaches do now. Harder max roster then now though so some 2025 commits could be in jeopardy and 2026 commits, outside your super top players, could be really slowed at that level, at least until the numbers are known in the Fall sometime. Point is - some P4 coaches will come out and support a number in the 25-28 range and are already there. Many other coaches with 30+ rosters or more, would then be facing some tough decisions. If the limits reach down to some mid-major conferences or even all of the bcs schools, going to get interesting.
Your second paragraph above: "my numbers include only their D1 years at their current school"... That would include Anson's years before he took on the women when he was coach of the men"s team and was the head coach of both the men and women. ...But I know what you meant.... only women.

Not really, or have you seen a listing? https://gohighlanders.com/news/2024...verside-hidalgo-named-interim-head-coach.aspx
Also, the entire back staff room at Arizona just got replaced. Don't think that's a good sign for the head coach.
Class move leaving 2 weeks before the season starts when the new guy's barely qualified to volunteer, but maybe that's the exact kind of shock to the system such a stagnant program needs.
Can't blame the guy though. He is probably going to make 30K more a year and moving to a larger program with more funds for the program and of course cost of living is going to be less. The smaller UC schools are strapped for cash!!!!!
Unsure how accurate, but according to those salary sites (Transparent CA, AZ Luminaria), he could make a lot closer to 30-40k less per year. The rest seems true though.
I don't know his reasoning but UA is not exactly in a great place financially right now. Esp with some perhaps expensive changes coming up. They have one horrible new trip by the way... and that visit to UNC should be interesting. https://azluminaria.org/2024/06/21/...ancial-health-of-athletics-and-global-campus/
