One of the best hires in a few years. May be the best hire since Pitt went with Randy Waldrum. Xavier may not have been aesthetically the best brand of soccer to watch, but they got the results and were very effective in their tactics. Well done Kansas.
I agree about Lie. He's a fantastic get for Kansas. Despite Kansas' overall record of 4-8-6 & 1-7-2, they were competitive in a lot of games this past season. They actually outscored their opponents, 22-18, playing pretty solid defense. Albeit one of those wins was a 6-0 blowout vs Colorado College, they still were only outscored 18-16 if that match is taken out of the equation. Lie is going in to a situation where the cabinet will not be empty as Kansas has a young team, overall. He is a fantastic recruiter and has extensive contacts throughout the Midwest, particularly in Ohio, Michigan, and Chicagoland. I expect that we'll see immediate improvements in the Jayhawk program.
Miami filled: We've got our guy ❕Welcome to the U, @KenMasuhr_Jr 🙌📰: https://t.co/C2ZJM0T3Mz pic.twitter.com/DjA6BxA3l5— Miami Hurricanes Soccer (@CanesFutbol) December 5, 2023
The opportunity of a lifetime for Ken Masuhr. Hard working Jersey guy who's never been a head coach and worked for the same head coach for 10+ years. I hope he's ready and hope he got a good long term contract. The ACC is brutal and just got a bit more brutal in women's soccer starting next year. ps - do all the quotes from other coaches in the press release validate the hire or no? It doesn't really instill confidence for me....

Will be interesting to see if Kansas can find some sustained success. Recruiting competition for resurgent Nebraska, Iowa and Michigan State programs? It seems to me like the only way Miami is going to break through the fray in any way is by mastering the transfer portal and relying HEAVILY on international players, similar to what FSU did to kick off their current dynasty. Miami is such a global city now (plus Messi) you would think it should be even easier to do than in Tallahassee.
I think this is a solid hire. The obvious knock is no head coaching experience which at the power 5 level you would think they would prefer a confidante that’s ran a program. But Mashur has a lot of experience in the college game and a lot of success working with an excellent head coach. Solid hire not a wow hire.
Who would a wow hire be. Put some names out there that would be WOW factor that would be going to Miami who has spit out a few coaches now with no success.
Nate Lie Katie Shields Kansas hit a wow hire with Nate but he would have been a massive hire at Miami IMHO
Sean Driscoll Josh Walters Angie Hind I know 2 of the above were interested in the position and would have been big hires in my opinion. I still think Miami made a solid hire I think any of the above would have been a little more wow.
Miami hired what they could. 3 other targets turned it down, and “wow” factor was what Kansas was going after, not Miami. Good hire, on someone that has been finally given the opportunity to be a HC after being a loyal assistant. Best wishes! Gardner Webb: chatted with the only assistant that stayed upon Varga departure and was let go a week before season start. How the tables have turned! Illinois State: turned down by Big Ten assistant and SEC associate head coach as of the last week of November. Not a surprise. Firing someone after a couple years is not appealing or good indication to anybody in the P4’s South Alabama: Georgia State HC, NAIA school HC, and Iowa AC were contacted. Paired with Xavier, easily the two best jobs open and should be able to secure someone with good experience to keep it going. Question is: Have these programs reached their ceilings? South Alabama hire influences the conference as a whole.
This is a position that I think does have potential. If they are to go off the men's side who hired Scott Wells last year, one of the best men's recruiters, then the school must be looking to build soccer as a whole. While Well's didn't have a good first season, now he is able to recruit his first class, i'm sure there will be a difference. If the AD is looking for something similar on the women's side, then can expect to see a much improved program in the not too distant future if they make the right hire!
Potential? With a mandated roster of 44, good luck. That’s a miserable requirement. Although, a new facility will help. Still a long way to go there.
Agreed that South Alabama is one of the top openings currently. Georgia State HC seems a little stable, done well there but nothing to get too excited about. Assuming the NAIA HC will be WCU as they are close and have been consistently making national finals. The AC at Iowa just came from Southern Miss (within the region of South Alabama), so will know the area and local kids so could be helpful.
AD seems a bit in over his head or delusional. In the same sentence he is saying he wants someone to push the team and compete in the top of the conference, he is also saying you have to carry 40+ on the roster and keep the parents and players happy. Not sure why parents are even part of the equation in a college program, but that is 2023 for you. This is from two mid major assistants who withdrew their names after the initial call with the AD. Were also told the president of school will be heavily involved with the process, guessing since green AD hired and fired the last coach within months.
They are going to need all 40 of those players once the exodus begins, if not already! Who in their right mind would take that on? I'm sure their will be someone, there is always one
This is what coaches are now starting to realize but not ready to accept - once parents have financial input in their kids athletics, they will want a return on investment. A coach only has full leverage if a player is on full scholarship or at the pro level. Club, high school, partial or no scholarship at college, and you lose that leverage. It's all about who pays the bills, has the most leverage. The only way to freeze parents out some, is by winning. Right or wrong, that is the reality.
