I think you are missing something. Does it say "leave of absence"? Or mention medical or family concerns at all? This was clearly an involuntary decision and I'd like to see what you're willing to bet she coaches another game at GMU? I'm guessing at least 10 players are in the portal on Day 1 (would be Nov 7). Frankly, a coaching change is a reason to be exempt from the portal "window" so some may be in sooner than that. I would like to think Mason is not going to play games with the status of their coach to prevent transfers from entering the portal but nothing is surprising these days...
Can someone help me understand why Portland State would be "hot"? As I posted previously - I'm not sure how you have success at PDX. The program hasn't had an overall winning record since 2014 but they did have a winning record (4-2-2) in Big Sky play last season, which is the first time that happened since 2017, and they don't have an on-campus stadium. I love PDX and I love the fact that PSU is a true, urban campus but as a college soccer coach it's got to be a tough place to recruit to. Please tell me what you see in their Year-by-Year Results that screams the seat should be hot. Katie Burton has a career record of 30-66-9 at PSU, which is below the overall winning percentage of the program but it's a situation where NO coach has left the program with a greater than .500 record.
No no no.. remember, guys, UCR is definitely not hot, because reasons. Plus, they just broke their 25-game winless streak, so that seat's probably ice cold at this point.
Limestone. Let me say I agree with you. I think her 4-2-2 last year should make the seat not hot right now. I think that Portland State has some real challenges including the stadium off campus and some budget problems. I think going 4-2-2 should get her at least two years so please don't take this the wrong way. Having said that you asked a question. I think the argument would be this. 1. Portland is a vibrant soccer community with a good youth soccer base to recruit in. 2. You sent 12 years worth of data in your link. She has been there for 6 3. In her 6 years she has gone 17-30-6 in conference. For a 32% win percentage and 57 points. 4. In the six years prior they went 36-12-2 in conference for a 72% win percentage and 110 points As I said I'm not in any way calling for her to be on the hotseat. I think that her 2022 shows that she might be figuring out the formula and they were solid when she first got there. I also have no idea whether there are other factors.(change in budget etc) I do know her 0-8 season was 2020 and I imagine Covid was a tough thing in Portland so that can be another mitigating factor. I think moving on from a coach a year after they had their best season in 5 years would be harsh. You just asked a question so I gave an answer.
As mentioned previously, keep your powder dry with this list. There are some on the warm/hot seat so took on weaker non conference games to have a better chance of padding their results. Coaches will do this in their last couple years of a contract. The real deal is where the program finishes in conference games.
I appreciate the answer, especially because I think these "hot seat" situations are a lot more nuanced than most people understand. It's interesting to note that the coach who's had the most success at PSU, Laura Schott, resigned to take a job at George Fox, a DIII school. I can't imagine that was because George Fox had a bigger budget and probably had more to do with quality of life issues. (Just a guess.) Speaking of 2020, I would have to think that being an urban school in PDX during all the upheaval was not an easy situation for student-athletes or coaches to deal with.
No need to have any explanations. This ongoing "hot seat" list is just a personal opinion without tons of merit behind it. A semi-witch hunt by a few posters keeps that want to keep it going...
Laura didn't quit PSU to take George Fox, she quit because she was going through a rough divorce and her ex was dragging her through the mud, being a real douche. She needed time to regroup, so she left the college game for a bit then came back and into a less stressful environment near home. Heck, maybe she'll end back up at PSU someday, she led them to like 3 Big sky titles, so has shown she can win there. Portland is a great city to recruit to, and not that hard. Just have to have the ins with the club coaches in the NW, like most successful programs, a recruiting pipeline. Big sky, not exactly a power conference, so to boast on one winning season in conference play is all in six years, not exactly much of a trend setter. She's never had a winning season. So would say it's at least warm there. But who knows. Portland people are unique. Maybe they'll keep her forever. Syracuse and Miami, those are hot. FIU I think if he gets a few more wins, safe for awhile. UWGB has a few more years till it warms up?
I won't entirely dismiss staffstaff list though. He/she had some accurate calls in the pass. I would say more hits than misses. I know coaches hate to see other coaches targeted for removal, but that's just the nature of the job. If one really believe they can have continuous losing seasons, high transfer rates, and bad reviews by players, more than likely your job will end sooner than expected.
I hear that it’s a dumpster fire in Green Bay. Even though it’s only her second year, not sure that she will be able to last the full contract.
I would think Portland State could be a good place to coach at. The Big Sky is a good conference currently though. The arrogance of Citowicki and Clevenger thinking they are allowed to beat power fives is upsetting the status quo and they need to calm down and know their places instead of causing a ruckus though. Maybe rename the league to the Small Sky so they know their place. Peasants.
Oh geez! The Torreos are 1-8-1, which includes three loses of 4 goals or greater. That's not good. I'm wondering if Northern Colorado should be added to the list? After a long string of solid seasons they seem to have really dropped off. Last year the Bears were 4-11-3 and this year they're 0-10-1.
Ahhh, finally the nuance and insight this thread always seems to be lacking. Just looking at records and throwing people on the hot/warm seat ignores all the other factors that go into a decision to keep/change coaching staff.
I would hope UNC Greeley would be given some significant time to fix things. Your argument is fair and they aren't good right now but it really only takes 2 bad classes in a row for things to go south really quickly. Some kids that don't stay, pan out, get hurt etc. I don't know about any of the specifics. I just know when you look at his time at UNC these 2 years are the exception. You referenced a string of solid seasons. From 2010 to 2021 he a. Made the conference tournament 11 out of 12 years. b Won the conference regular season c. won the Big Sky tournament and went to NCAA tournament twice. In addition to that they made 3 different conference tournament finals that they didn't win. Things aren't good right now and I understand this is a "what have you done lately business" but after 28 years and 212 wins at the school I would hope he gets the time to fix it as he obviously knows the blue print. How long? 4 years seems fair. He is in year 2 of struggling so I think he SHOULD get 2 more. What does he get? I don't know. Just my two cents. 0-10-1 is rough though....
Hot: American Boston College College of Charleston Detroit Mercy Eastern Michigan George Mason Green Bay Nicholls State Oregon Portland State Temple University Texas A&M Corpus Christi University of Miami UC Riverside University of San Diego Stetson University Syracuse University Rhode Island Warm: Cal State Northridge? Cleveland State Colgate Eastern Washington? FIU Niagara? North Dakota State Ohio State UMKC Utah anyone else warm?
Do me a favor and take Portland State out of the Hot category and, if you have to place it somewhere, place it in the Warm category. I mean there are two other teams in the Big Sky Conference who've yet to win a game, Weber State and Northern Colorado, and they're not even listed as warm yet you have the seat of a program that has traditionally struggled as hot. Makes no sense to me.
Utah and Ohio State should not be on this list. Utah and Ohio State are not warm. Honestly the warm list needs to go away. Well, both lists do really. But the warm list really needs to go. This is toxic stuff.
You don’t have to read the forum if you are bothered by the content. looking at northern Colorado I would think he has more time to turn things around he’s been pretty successful over the years. Oregon still winless- my favorite program Arizona with a nice dominant win in that one! Are Miami on their way to cooling their seat?
UCR now 2-0 in the Big West. Consider 2 years ago all sports were almost lost. 10 new freshman recruits, coach runs the Puerto Rico National Team and a number of player are on international teams. Oh, did I mention 2-0.
Always adorable when parents join the forum, just to big up their DD's coach. Good on ya. Welcome (even if you were surprisingly quiet when they didn't win any of the previous 25 games)! Lets see what the old Google box has to say about those two huge wins... Oh, nice! That now makes them 2-14-11 in their last 27 games overall, 2-11-3 in their last 16 Big West games. Maybe don't pull a muscle patting yourself on the back quite yet. Just don't finish dead last for the fourth year in a row and that'll be progress.
