This story is completely bogus. Never happened. Diego didn't miss a penalty in 1986. He only missed one for the NT vs Yougoslavia in 90. Oh the power of Twitter nonsense....:)

Not sure if the exact stat has been published somewhere by Opta or but that is pretty remarkable. Found this in a BBC Article.

Argentina's passing game was consummate, the sort Messi relishes, as they completed 800 in total and had a completion rate of 92% - both of which were the highest on record in a World Cup game since 1966.

Great f*cking goal, reminds me of the one Cambiasso scored against Serbia in 2006. And great gayina combination from Enzo and Julian. We are going to see a lot more of that for years to come, I believe.

And what do you guys have to say about the "combinación bostera" for the first goal? Nahuel to Alexis!

(I know, I know, Alexis came from Argentinos, but he did play for us briefly before jumping to Europe. I'll take it).

That’s impressive, but by the time he came in Poland wasn’t even pretending to challenge for the ball.

Kempes did not miss a penalty in the third game of the 1978 World Cup, against Italy. Argentina was only awarded one penalty in that World Cup, against France, and Passarella converted.

At the 1986 WC Argentina was not awarded any penalties.

I do hope that Messi emulates Kempes and Maradona in the later stages.

Just rewatched the 2nd half and extra time of the Mexico 2006 match.

Best players against Mexico were Messi and Mascherano: 19, and 22 year old
Best against Germany were Tevez & Mascherano: both 22 years old

In this WC Enzo, Julian, and MacAllister have all played very well and they are only 21, 22, 23.

Experience is nonsense! Has nothing to do with performance in the WC. Maybe the opposite since recovery time between matches is less than normal. Also, these young guys play like they have nothing to lose whereas the older ones are weighed down by expectations, past defeats, and worried it might be their last world cup.

1000% agree. This is a young man's tournament.

Additionally: veteran players have an established career ($$$) and do not want to risk ending it. Young players have an excellent opportunity to showcase their skills to the world and advance their career to achieve that $$$. Just look at the price tag on Gapko and Enzo during this WC.

Speaking of youngsters, Thiago Almada, at age 21, became the first MLS player to play in a World Cup match for Argentina, when he replaced Alexis Mac Allister against Poland. In very limited minutes he was active in the passing game, participated in a scoring chance, and acquitted himself well.

Subbing Roman was the absolute worst move. In spite of being double teamed of his time out there, he was able to insure a positive possession number. When he came off, Germany controlled possession for pretty much the remainder of the game. He was also the most fouled player on the day.

When he came off, we lost most of our shape as well and the ability on set pieces and one two players in that Cup that could split any defense with a pass. What did Cambiasso do? Nothing while on the pitch except miss a penalty. Aimar would’ve actually been the better option.

I was in favor of Roman at the time in the heat of the moment but watching again it's clear that he had to be taken off. In the 1st half we won possession despite Roman's horrible match. Very similar to our match against England in 2002 with Veron playing horribly yet us dominating midfield in the 1st half. In that match, Ortega played the role that Tevez would in 2006. Sorin played the same role in both matches!!

In the 2nd half we had already lost control of the midfield *before* Roman was removed. Pekerman could afford to leave him on as long as we were controlling. When we lost control, he had to be removed. On top of that he was exhausted. In fact, he was exhausted in the previous match with Mexico.

I repeat: it's ridiculous how much flak Pekerman took for removing Roman. Unbelievable some members here would agree with your post. I suggest rewatching! Suppose this is the Boca goggles just how it's impossible to reason with River Gaucho.

There is definitely an argument for replacing him with Aimar rather than Cambiasso. After rewatching the 3 matches the 2002 squad played, I'm thinking Aimar should have been made undisputed master of the mid for both 2002 and 2006 cups.

Somewhere between £70-80M. All the big vultures in the EPL are interested. He has a unique skill set and the sky is the limit for him. A bit like di Maria when he popped in at Benfica before he was off again.

The kid has talent no doubt about it. There was a lovely slaloming run akin to a young Riquelme sliding the ball along with a pass at the end of it. He won't be MLS much longer.

Just watched the 2002's squad 3 matches.
Best player of matches against England and Sweden was Aimar who was 23 years ago. Replaced Veron in the 2nd half against England when we were down 1-0 and started the huge pressure match against Sweden. First WC, no problem.
