I wasn't claiming they shouldn't count. I'm claiming they aren't as great an accomplishment as going to Mexico and getting results in the current format. So for instance, if MLS decides to give the Sounders a big gold star to recognize the CCL win then they would give you guys and LA a big silver star. Not the same. Real Madrid still had to go on the road for those.
Seattle won CONCACAF with 3 DPs. DC did it before there were DPs (or allocation money to buy down going over the cap). Yeah, we had it easy.
You’re right, I guess we all should just admit that Seattle invented soccer and soccer culture and that before that everyone was just playing kickball. Beware of hubris, your time in the dregs of suck will come as it comes for all franchises.
I mean, Etcheverry was obviously a DP even if they didn't call it that. But given where MLS, and American soccer in general, was back then, I think you could make a plausible argument that DC's win was actually a bigger accomplishment than Seattle's.
Yep. Jaime Moreno would probably be a young DP in today's MLS, too. Might be a bit less likely but there's a good chance John Harkes would command DP money, too.
And that sucked. I wish there was a way to apply limits when you sign people, but provide some leeway to keep people. No, I have no idea how to make that fair!
Sunday afternoon in Lucca. Lucca calcio femminile v. Pistoia. Start of second half in scoreless draw.
Not sure who this dude is or how legit his claims are ..... but is it possible this could make that team even worse - or is it okay to pay a guy extra in team stock options in lieu of a DP salary? Soccer star Lionel Messi will acquire 35% of Major League Soccer's Inter Miami and join the team summer 2023, reports @Alex_candal.— Mark J. Burns (@markjburns88) May 17, 2022
Mr. Posh Spice got paid off-book by Pepsi and with a promise of membership interest in a new team. But a player getting current membership interest in a team? Not gonna happen, even for the Argentinean Messi, since pretty much all of the membership group of that team AND the membership groups of the other teams would have to approve.
Yes, but this is MLS, where rules are more like guidelines, and you’re not a pirate, so they don’t apply anyway. Arrr!
Admittedly, I haven't been paying much attention to Charlotte, but was surprised to learn they let their coach go already. https://www.mlssoccer.com/news/charlotte-fc-part-ways-with-head-coach-miguel-angel-ramirez
I'd be stunned, flabbergasted and a host of other expressions of amazement if he was getting 35% of the team's value. 3.5% would be more likely, yet not necessarily believable at $24.5M. MLS teams have $700M valuations, no way the Mas brothers are giving an over the hill guy who might not be over covid a $245M share in their team. He's a massive draw, but he's not a quarter of a billion dollars marketing asset to any team and I am not even sure Miami could recoup $24.5M from marketing Messi, especially since the since there has to be some pooling of money when it comes to the deal with adidas and MLS's single entity. Considering how they botched the last transfer window, their problems are deeper than the coach who they hamstrung.
Charlotte is 8th place and two points out of a playoff spot. We are thirteen out of 14 teams and Chicago - while below us is playing better than we are.
there's gotta be more to this Charlotte story. Although I gather their GM had a pretty disastrous press conference this afternoon where he seemed to not really have much of an idea why the coach was canned
What I’ve come to understand regarding Charlotte FC firing Miguel Angel Ramirez is that a Designated Player refused to play for the club after the international break if MAR was still in charge. This provides context on Zoran’s statement “we had no choice, we had to do it.”— John Hayes (@JohnHayesOnAir) May 31, 2022
What a shitshow. So, the inmates are running the asylum in Charlotte. Good to know. No way that turns out poorly.
