Obviously the Quakes still need a LB, Marcos Lopez replacement... could this be a hint they may bring in a free agent left back? I guess we'll find out over the next month, hopefully sooner rather than later. There were rumors that San Jose could add from the free agent market as well. MLS clubs can sign free agents (those not under contract) until the MLS Roster Freeze Date on Sept. 2.
Cross-posting because it was discussed in here... Goodbye Marcos Lopez Forever Black & Blue. ⚫️🔵NEWS: Earthquakes transfer defender @20Marcos_Lopez to @Feyenoord.We wish Marcos the best of luck & can't wait to follow his journey in Europe!— San Jose Earthquakes (@SJEarthquakes) August 8, 2022 Hopefully we look back on this as a big moment, a talented young player bought from Latin America and developed by the Quakes into one of the best at his position in MLS, and sold to a relatively big club in Europe. We have no official word on the transfer fee (just that it's "club-record" which doesn't mean much given how new the Quakes are to the player development game), but hopefully that gets reported by the media because without that info it's tough to judge the move... NEWS: Earthquakes Transfer Defender Marcos Lopez to Feyenoord The San Jose Earthquakes announced today that the club has transferred defender Marcos Lopez to Feyenoord of the Dutch Eredivisie for an undisclosed club-record fee.
Now that transfermarkt has posted the fee paid for Marcos we can revisit these numbers (although my guesstimate turned out to be fairly close to what transfermarkt is reporting). 1.1 million fee. 20% goes to Cristal leaves us with 880k. Subtract the 385k we paid for Marcos leaves us with $495,000. Since Marcos was a U22 and we paid less than a million for him we should receive the full 880k in GAM.
As we are accumulating GAM we could spend it to buy down one or more of Espinoza, Monteiro, and Gregus (whose tagged as a DP) and then go out and buy some much better DPs. Better players equals better results.
According to https://www.mlssoccer.com/clubs/san-jose-earthquakes/roster/ he is. It actually makes sense if you don't plan to sign any other DP why waste TAM/GAM on him? Just let him count as a DP and use the *AM on someone else.
It doesn't say anything in this Quakes signing announcement of him being a DP. https://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/news-earthquakes-sign-slovakian-midfielder-jan-gregus
If MLS is calling him a DP I have no reason to believe he's not a DP. Why would the Quakes spend TAM on him if they weren't going to get a third DP anyway?
Why waste a DP spot on any of Gregus, Espinoza, or Monteiro? Any one of them could be bought down using TAM and then we could go out and get much better players.

Where are you getting 1.1 million? That's not what it says on his Transfermarkt page: Season Date Left Joined MV Fee 22/23 Aug 8, 2022 San Jose Feyenoord $1.98m $1.43m https://www.transfermarkt.us/marcos-lopez/profil/spieler/432175
At the time I wrote the comment transfermarkt was reporting 1.1. Now it's been updated to 1.43. I would guess they got new/more reliable info. My original calculations were based on my guess of 1.5m which turned out to be very close..
Because that’s what we had to do to get him. Also, his contract is up at the end of the year. So we can easily ditch him, his contract, and recoup that DP spot. So it’s all good!! Go Quakesfans!!
