Not surprising that Riqui Puig and Gaston Brugman come out ahead of EVERYONE ELSE overall.
This is a DOMINANT midfield duo. I don't see us keeping Riqui for a long time but I hope we can keep him for as long as possible.

NOTE: I sorted by Rating each time, which is overall average rating for the season (Whoscored Ratings)

Just a note: MLS tallies secondary assists, while WS does not. Counting 2nd assists, Araujo leads the team with 8; Efrain's second with 6, Puig has 5.

Loved seeing the numbers @Bilgediver - thanks!
Those were some midfield additions, eh?

    Just a small stat:

    Galaxy had 51 goals against.

If we (arbitrarily, admittedly) take the middle range to be +/- 6 (so 45-57)

    The distribution of teams is:

    Western Conference

    Dallas 37
    LAFC 38
    Nashville 41
10 teams in the middle range
    San Jose 69

    Eastern Conference

    Philadelphia 26
    Nyc, Nyrb, Columbus 41
8 teams in the middle range
    Toronto 66
    DC United 71

So our defense is fine, but not special. That accords with how it seems to me. The players are generally decent, but each will make a few bad pays each year which results in goals. Add to that an attacking framework that allows for more counters and we end up in the middle.

It's interesting to see the other teams that do better and worse. Maybe Nashville's players are a little bit better than ours (they have Zimmerman but they also start Romney) but the team focus on defense makes a big difference. San Jose is just a mess.

The two MLS cup teams both have elite defenses. This suggests to me that we are who we are, a team that should make the playoffs but won't make the cup. Either we develop an ungodly offense, and with Costa and Cabral that's unlikely, or we need to improve our defense.

Without doubt out defense has to improve for us to have a shot at the cup.

And our defensive problems aren’t just due to our personnel - we also suffer from a lack of tactical understanding and haphazard training. If any of you watched NYCFC play you saw how a well trained defense works. When appropriate they pushed out in perfect unison, with perfect timing. Especially on set pieces where they put half of their opponents offsides more often than not. Remember the loose ball scramble goal that cost us the game vs. LAFC? If we had pushed up when we were supposed to the area in front of Bond would have been goat-free and they wouldn’t have gotten an easy tap in.

Or if you watched Philly you would have seen defenders with their heads on a swivel, always aware of their marks’ positioning. You would have seen midfielders tracking late runners, preventing overloads. And so on.

I think with the right coach our current defensive corp are good enough to be a Cup worthy defense. But Vanney is not a good tactician so the only way we can upgrade our D is to upgrade our personnel. Experienced high soccer IQ players bring their own tactical knowledge to their position - just look at how smoothly Caceres came in and helped organize our D.

That is why our defensive players who aren’t tactically savvy, like Araujo, are such a liability. Vanney isn’t teaching him how to play defense so I don’t see a future for him with us. (Well, unless Vanney goes to a 3 cb formation which would allow him to concentrate more on his attacking play.) Edwards is more aware of his marks but he is also tactically sloppy, too often caught chasing his man from behind or going to ground when he shouldn’t, etc. So bringing in experienced, disciplined outside backs would go a long way toward improving our quality of play in the defensive third.

I still don’t see our 3 (4) cb’s as a problem. I would put Caceres, Williams and Coulibaly in the top third of cb corps in the league. Yes, a totally dominant cb like JVD would be a great addition. But players of his quality aren’t that easy to find. (Especially for our crack scouting team!)

The final piece is goalkeeping. I’m on the fence with Bond. He is solid and competent. But he isn’t winning games for us in the way Blake, Frei, Turner, Johnson and their ilk often do. Ideally we could get someone of that quality - such keepers can make up for a multitude of mistakes in front of them.

tldr: As Baysider says - we have to upgrade our defensive personnel to have a real shot at winning our 6th Cup.

Lacking coaching prowess we must make the team Vanney-proof.
